David Baddiel's being cautious here. He's not responded directly to Omid, but he has replied to someone else who tagged him in his reply to Omid. If you can follow that.

My bet is David is carefully investigating the backstory before he tweets anything on it. I couldn't possibly predict what he'll say or do, but if I were him, I would be very professionally unhappy with Djalili right now.

He's posted repeatedly that "It was all a laugh to start with". He knew he'd upset women but they're only women so it was just a laugh. So he kept prodding. Just a laugh, right?

Now his agent has given him a call and he's panicking. Didn't those women realise it was all just banter? How dare they take the joke too far?!

If he'd taken the initial responses seriously in the first place, he wouldn't be in this position.

Bloody hell when I started this thread I had no idea the Twitter row would get so bad. I think Omid wanted some controversy to promote his shows or something. He waded in making 'jokes' not really understanding how bad it is for some of these women in academia. He really is an example of the old 'male chauvinist pig' stereotype.
I previously would never have described myself as a feminist but the scales have fallen from my eyes.

Blocking me will not help her. I reiterate, online abuse and incitement of hate is a serious issue. Especially now. It was all a laugh to start with but her thread defaming my character is utterly disgraceful. This is now a legal issue.

I would believe that if there were recent any evidence a Nazi had wanted to speak at a university and had been no platformed.

This wasn't that long ago, it's what I first thought of when I saw his tweet.

I doubt Omid Djalili is daft enough to believe that a law is being planned to compel universities to offer a platform to everyone who wants to speak.

Djalil is attacking anyone outside his approved circle of people who should be permitted to speak, which should be the focus.

He might just be attacking Nazis to be fair. There have been rows in the past over both Nick Griffin and David Irving being asked to speak at Oxford, and it's possible any law changes might enshrine their right to do so.

I would believe that if there were recent any evidence a Nazi had wanted to speak at a university and had been no platformed.
