Gender doublethink

There's this little logic hop that happens in genderist arguments. You define something one way, look at some data or make an argument, then change your definition and pretend the same conclusion applies.

Classical example is women (biological) need separate sports categories due to different physiology. Change definition of women to gender identity and descriptor of women to "afab". Conclusion no longer holds - it's now "afab" people who need separate sports categories in their terminology, but genderists conveniently don't notice that.

Use a wide definition of health conditions mainly diagnosed at puberty and casting no shadow of doubt on a person's sex, and declare 2% of the population "are intersex". Change definition and say intersex means babies for whom their sex is ambiguous at birth - boom, 2% of babies have an ambiguous sex at birth. Allsorts told my child that in a school assembly recently Shock

Refuse to record sex, record self-ID gender instead - no reason to segregate prisons by sex, look, sexual offences by women are on the rise.

You can't even tell if trans women are in your changing rooms, they pass so well. So you mustn't query any obviously male person as you can't know how they identify.

Changing rooms all have enclosed cubicles so you're being bigoted not to want penises in the communal women only showers.

Any more?

Transfolx talking about their troubles are brave.

Women talking about their troubles are weaponising their trauma.

NotBadConsidering, I've known a few people with PhDs who have definite batshit tendencies, but nothing that quite compares to that.

MissingLinker · 10/02/2021 13:35

I'm not sure why mine has been deleted.

There HAS been a consistent effort by TRAs for more children to have access to puberty blockers, often backed up by the assertion that these children are a suicide risk and that we are "literally murdering trans kids" by not wanting a free for all on drugs whose lasting effects aren't well known.

And yet the vast majority of adult trans people (of whom most are male) have had no surgery, no hormones and are women because they say they're women. It's considered offensive to suggest that their male bodies and genitals are not, in fact, women's bodies and genitals.

@ANewCreation

A baby pulling out their barrette or undoing the poppers on their baby gro is expressing their true gender identity. Gender identity expression is nothing to do with sexist stereotypes.
Always worth posting this as a reminder of where this comes from. If you apply the theme of the thread here and to other such academics it could be “I’m a seemingly educated-to-Ph.D level rational person who equally expresses ideas that are totally, utterly ‘are you on glue?’ level batshit.”

Women: 'Women are the female sex class and we are oppressed by gender.'
Activists: 'Nope. Women are a gender class; centering your sex is oppression.'

InvisibleDragon · 10/02/2021 10:24

Who are you to question anyone's lived experience. We believe women.

You feel unsafe allowing trans women into shelters because of your history of sexual abuse. Check your privilege, you bigot.

...it is alleged.

😐

Someone who believes their own lies, pathological liars? Or is there another term for it? Yes, these people should definitely be influencing public policies. 😳
Marley20 · 10/02/2021 10:03

What a bloody useful thread. It's when you see it all together you see how crazy it all is.

Chaka and screaming threats of violence on social media is just a natural response.

highame there are a number of court cases, if those of us who can't be public for fear for our jobs keep supporting those who can. Has the advantage that courts have to go by actual law not "Stonewall law", and government cannot legislate this nonsense if they even wanted to as it would look ridiculous and be extremely unpopular when spelled out in legal language.

Tw are vulnerable, feminine and soft and gentle in nature and are not aggressive. They need to be in women’s spaces. Oh and also women’s rugby/cage fighting/ wrestling/ martial arts.

highame · 10/02/2021 08:30

We need to take this on, in law. Except there are so many tax funded organisations, that are so large, that it would be impossible to know what the case should be and who it should be against.

Judging by the comments in the Times this morning on the 'chest feeding' there'd be an awful lot of support

TheElementsSong · 10/02/2021 08:25

TRA: Spouts pseudoscience about intersex people, chromosome combinations in karyotype testing, MRI scans showing lady brains trapped in man skulls all as proof that trans is an actual biological reality...

GC: Great, so people can run tests to confirm this condition!

TRA: No testing! No gatekeeping! Acceptance without exception! This is a deeply held identity and completely internal invisible metaphysical essence that eludes crude material reality!

ANewCreation · 10/02/2021 02:04

Man does something only male people get the opportunity to do, making full use of his male privilege: fathers children, wins decathlon gold, climbs Mt. Everest with the British Team in 1953, attends all-male Oxford College in 60s, member of male army regiment etc

Transitions

Yay! His feelings tell him that his experience is a woman's/female experience and was so from the beginning. Gender was a trap. He gets to be the first 'woman' to do things. He feels entitled to use women's spaces and is happy to ignore the women saying no.

Celebrated

Woman: states that there are material differences between the lives and opportunities of those males and her own life, actually female from the beginning. She battles to make headway in a structurally sexist society. Her feelings tell her that misogyny is still rife, gender is a trap, that she is losing the words she uses to name herself - woman, female, mother and she has to resist being labelled 'cis', becoming a subset of her own sex category.

She would like some space to herself at times away from all males, feeling safe in the company of females, particularly when she is vulnerable or in a state of undress.

Boo! Women like her are transphobic and exclusionary bio-essentialists. Be kind, bigot!

Castigated.

There’s definitely one about “being against Gay conversion therapy but supportive of surgery on teens (who are exhibiting signs that they may be gay)”

NotBadConsidering · 10/02/2021 01:42

“Puberty blockers don’t affect future sexual function, what are you on about?”

“It’s ok if puberty blockers affect future sexual function because some adults are asexual anyway.”

PotholeParadies · 10/02/2021 01:25

You must be scrupulously careful with pronouns and sexed-language on twitter, otherwise you may make someone on the other side of the planet feel unsafe.

Who cares if someone in RL makes you feel unsafe in a communal changing room or women's domestic violence refuge? Bigot.

NotBadConsidering · 10/02/2021 01:10

“Puberty confers no advantage for sport.”

“If we block puberty then those children won’t have any sporting advantage when they’re adults.”

NotBadConsidering · 10/02/2021 01:09

Another few after the Tavistock published their study:

Our study shows there is no improvement in children’s psychological functioning from puberty blockers but we still argued in court for us to be allowed to continue to administer puberty blockers and continue to do so in order to help their psychological functioning.

yourhairiswinterfire · 10/02/2021 00:50

The reason large numbers of children in the UK are now identifying as transgender is because society is so lovely and accepting these days, so it's safer for them to come out. At the same time, the UK is supposedly one of the most transphobic places in the world, and very dangerous to live here if you're a trans person.

No predator will take advantage of the current situation and go through the hassle of identifying as a woman to gain access to vulnerable females. < male who identifies as a woman commits a predatory crime > "They're not really trans".🤦‍♀️

Graphic death threats to women, etc= stop taking everything so seriously, it's not real life, get over it. An I❤JKR sticker or the dictionary definition of the word woman= actual violence that makes grown ups fear for their safety.

"Stop reducing trans people to our body parts". But also, women should rename yourselves vagina owners, cervix-havers and menstruators for the benefit of trans men.

Vagina owners, cervix-havers and menstruators is kind and inclusive language. Penis-havers, ejaculators and prostrate owners is reducing transwomen to their genitals, it's transphobic and degrading.

Also, we apparently can't even tell who is a transwoman, but transwomen are attacked because they're transwomen Confused

NotBadConsidering · 10/02/2021 00:49

“Puberty blockers give kids time to think and be sure it’s the right choice for them.”

“The fact that they all go onto cross sex hormones proves they didn’t need time to think and they were always the right ones to get puberty blockers.”

“Trans is not an illness of any sort.”

“Trans healthcare is not meeting the needs of this non-illness.”

CharlieParley · 10/02/2021 00:41

Very interesting thread this btw. Thanks for posting, thirdfiddle.

CharlieParley · 10/02/2021 00:40

Stop saying that we make you feel unsafe if we're in your spaces. You can't even tell. Lots of us have been using your spaces for centuries and you never noticed. Because we all pass.

We are women because we say we are. We don't need to change anything about ourselves. Masculinity is valid. Talking about passing is gatekeeping. Gatekeeping is bigotry.

(Usually in the same conversation.)
