Humza Yousaf and Scottish Hate Crime Bill

Humza Yousaf, the Scottish Justice Secretary, has just tweeted that the recent amendments tabled on the Freedom Of Expression (Hate Crime) Bill will not now be moved on. Hugely disappointing for women speaking out might still be labelled hate criminals here in Scotland. And I can't help wondering if it's somehow linked to Joanna Cherry's sacking.

I don't know if I would put him in the same category as the green haired woke brigade.
I don't think he thinks this stuff up himself.

It reminds me of when one of my children tries to argue based on something their dad has told them. They don't understand the logic because there is none. But they try anyway and it sounds daft and then they double down.

Humza has plenty of strong women in his life and he goes out of his way to support them. I think the problem is that a lot of people like him think that being right on involves adopting the trans activist stance wholesale but haven't understood women's rights and equalities well enough in the first place, so it doesn't occur to them there are contradictions.

I'm not defending him. It's cowardly. But we have people in common and I honestly don't think he does it from a place of misogyny.

I'm scared more widely about how entrenched SNP elected members are about this because it is showing them up as dim and because it will cause legislative issues further down the line.

Lots of folk are talking about voting for the ISP so it really could affect the election.

LizzieSiddal · 02/02/2021 11:25

WTF!!

I agree however that a few well placed placards Hmm which will end up with a woman in court, will result in a complete sunlight on this ridiculous law.

MichelleofzeResistance · 02/02/2021 11:22

Of course he hates women.

All of them behind this hate women.

Just look on Twitter at the gleeful joy in seeing females positioned to suffer whatever males want and not even be able to mention it. It will be a fucking crime to mention it.

Scotland had a long, terrible history of witch burning and they're heading right back there, eyes wide open and joyfully embracing the gynephobia all the way.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 02/02/2021 11:21

Will the woke keep campaigning for prison abolition or will they give that a wee rest while it suits them to lock up inconvenient women?

littlbrowndog · 02/02/2021 11:20

Now we have. Yousaf saying women might do bad things. FFS he does hate women

MichelleofzeResistance · 02/02/2021 11:19

So, females.

Never question men. Never speak a word of criticism. Never mention your own rights, or that you're unhappy with treatment. Never mention unfairness to you or discrimination or crimes against you, or your own exclusion. Or you will be punished.

Eyes down. Mouth shut. Cringe as they pass, and hope they don't see you. Scotland: by men. For men.

For fucks sake is this fucking real? What planet are these people on?!

Justhadathought · 02/02/2021 11:06

Essentially, it means if you question the trans ideology you are guilty of a hate crime

Unless you are religious? What is the religion amendment

Can someone clarify.

i always wondered how the woke left were going to explain to the Muslim, Jewish and other faith based communities....that the women only swimming sessions, that many local authorities put on, for muslim women, for example, would now be open to males who identified as women.

They certainly never seemed to consult these communities when suggesting gender neutral toilets etc in council owned properties.

Yousaf says he rejects Rhoda Grant MSP’s amendment protecting those who ‘advocate for women’s rights’ claiming that it could allow expressions of transphobia, homophobia and islamophobia.

🙄🙄🙄🙄

AnyOldPrion · 02/02/2021 09:51

They won't have to arrest us all.

A few token arrests here and there to remind all the other women how much they have to lose - jobs, custody of their children (because what's going to happen to their children while they're in prison), family relationships (as men are leaned on to distance themselves from their wives who are in prison for a hate crime).

There will be women whose children are grown, have no husbands and can afford to take the hit. Awful as it is, I’ve thought for a while that if any truly oppressive laws are brought in, then protest through deliberate non-compliance might be the only way to demonstrate.

Suffragettes did it and if necessary, so will we.

highame · 02/02/2021 09:37

So, I guess Scottish women should now be planning their protests. Biological sex inserted into everything. Comments about biological sex everywhere. Save the police time and stand outside police stations with placards stating Woman = Adult Human Female.

I also would love to see how science is to be taught.

CaraDuneRedux · 02/02/2021 09:34

@ArabellaScott

when a woman is arrested for saying humans cannot change sex

They are going to be awfy busy arresting us all.

Repressive regimes 101.

UppityPuppity · 02/02/2021 09:26

Betsy thanks for the clarification.

This IS insane.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/02/2021 09:17

And I guess by rejecting the amendments which covered this, even the one that the government had themselves provisionally proposed, they are suggesting that they do intend those situations to be covered by the Bill.

BetsyM00 · 02/02/2021 08:19

UppityPuppity No, all the opposition amendments have been withdrawn too.

See the MBM link above. It looks like they have agreed to find consensus behind closed doors over a very bland freedom of speech clause - with no specific protections over speech on trans ideology.

And significantly this means no debate is heard in public. Nothing will be on the record of Parliament's intentions on this Bill. Which is important because, looking ahead, when a woman is arrested for saying humans cannot change sex, there is nothing to point to to say Parliament did not intend the law to cover such instances.

UppityPuppity · 02/02/2021 08:05

The Cabinet Secretary for Justice, Humza Yousaf has put down an amendment (amendment 82)

The other amendment from a Conservative, Liam Kerr, was:

So can I just check -I’m another non-Scot trying to get my head around this shitshow- HY has removed the amendment but the LK amendment still stands - but because he is Tory, it isn’t likely to succeed?

CaraDuneRedux · 01/02/2021 23:58

Before we went to China I had to sit DS down and explain there were all sorts of things about politics and current affairs that we simply could not talk about while we were there.

Worrying to think I'm going to have to give him the same talk before we go to visit the rellies in Scotland next time.

Makes me think that when Scotland does get independence (next 5 years or less is my prediction) I will not be applying for dual nationality.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 01/02/2021 23:53

Love the way the frame it as 'homophobic and transphobic'. It's not homophobic to say sex is immutable and to use the words man and woman to mean sex not 'gender'.
It isn't transphobic either, it's the majority viewpoint across the fucking planet and they want to make it illegal to point it out incase they hurt feelings.

ArabellaScott · 01/02/2021 22:42

Thanks for the statement, MBM. Always appreciate your expert thoughts on these issues.

I wish they were more reassuring ...

MurrayBlackburnMackenzie · 01/02/2021 22:26

We've just published a short statement in response to the developments.

Justhadathought · 01/02/2021 21:03

catholic

Justhadathought · 01/02/2021 21:02

See he has put in a clause which allows people of religious faith a different set of standards. Is that right? so if you are a Muslim or a catholioc you can by-pass the bits you do not like with no penalty?

"Does this mean I can object to sex self id because I am a Catholic - but not because I am a woman" ?

ArabellaScott · 01/02/2021 20:52

This isn't the first 'credible threat' Joanna's had.

And she's not had a word of support nor backing from Nicola Sturgeon. Compare the Twitter speech given the other night in support of trans rights, and the complete silence when women are threatened.

ArabellaScott · 01/02/2021 20:50

It's fine to threaten the personal safety of women, though, isn't it, Humza, Nicola, et al?

Glad Joanna Cherry is somewhere safe.

Be kind, eh?

Genuine question: how is teaching biology going to work in Scotland if this goes through?
