Humza Yousaf and Scottish Hate Crime Bill

Humza Yousaf, the Scottish Justice Secretary, has just tweeted that the recent amendments tabled on the Freedom Of Expression (Hate Crime) Bill will not now be moved on. Hugely disappointing for women speaking out might still be labelled hate criminals here in Scotland. And I can't help wondering if it's somehow linked to Joanna Cherry's sacking.

Yousaf says he rejects Rhoda Grant MSP’s amendment protecting those who ‘advocate for women’s rights’ claiming that it could allow expressions of transphobia, homophobia and islamophobia.'

Why "Islamophobia?" We aren't allowed to call out some forms (obviously there are plenty of others) of cultural misogyny in any way? This is chilling. Is "advocating for women's rights" considered bigotry in and of itself now?

LizzieSiddal · 02/02/2021 12:44

There is exactly no conflict netween trans rights and the equal (and not "sex-based") rights of women.

So we had a law to protect women and you now think Women no longer need this protection?
We can see the SNP are now coming for the protected rights of people with disabilities and Black and other ethnic minorities. Do you really think the uk people will agree with this fuckwitery?

Please just vote for some other party rather than the SNP or Greens in the election in May and this stuff can be made to go away.
Yep- I'd avoid the greens as it's against party policy to think that "people can't change sex"

And gravity does not exist, left is now right because we formed a committee who produced the paper we told them to, and gynephobia is now compulsory, with heresy and blasphemy punishable by law.

Light the bonfires and man the ducking stools. The new foundries for scolds' bridles are a wonderful new world of jobs for the steel industry and bridling scolds is the epitome of equality and respect for women. We formed a committee that said so.

That comment! Sums it all up, doesn't it?

Mish the scundering lays it all on the line!

'Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely'
The SNP on a low turnout has been in power too long now in Scotland....

ArabellaScott · 02/02/2021 12:16

if we get rid of the SNP in May this bill would not go ahead?

Good question! I don't know. Plenty of other parties seem happy to continue throwing women under the bus, unfortunately.

@IsurviveonCoffeeandWinein2021

I don't post here often but read a lot. You are an amazing bunch. So does this mean if we get rid of the SNP in May this bill would not go ahead?
Well it can be repealed by whoever replaces them.

I shall. Never thought I would say this in my life, but after this week's events, I will vote Tory as the best chance of getting the SNP out. Second vote the other new party ... whose name I forget.

I read that they did agree to change the law to require actual proof of intent in stirring up hatred? If so, that could make it difficult to get convictions.

Also,.we need to see the general free speech clause they will have. Just because it presumably doesn't get into specific examples with the trans issue, it doesn't necessarily mean that it will not be a useful clause to defend yourself.

If it turns out that the police are harassing people (even more) for social media comments or whatever, there will be legal challenges I imagine, and there is still a reasonable chance that the courts come down on the side of free speech.

ArabellaScott · 02/02/2021 12:05

Here's the Greens standing up for the rights of men again. Thank god for that.

Sorry, is that our Secretary for Justice saying that women's rights involve transphobia homophobia and islamophobia? Is he actually saying that women's rights is illegal in Scotland now, is that actually really truly what he is saying? I am struggling here.

@CaraDuneRedux

We shouldn't have to in a mature 21st Century democracy. I won't be joining in with protest. I will be relocating along with all the tax my family pays.

As I said upthread, if Scotland were to get independence (and I think it will in the next 5 years), I would be eligible for dual nationality, which is a serious consideration because of freedom of movement in the EU. But I won't be taking out Scottish nationality if they've turned into a police state.

I don't think it is that likely (you are viewing through the lens of wider UK media desperate for a story). Why should the UK Government grant the special order again when it was a 'once in a generation' thing? With Brexit (which many SNP supporters voted for, for various reasons eg cause chaos in UK or because they actually don't want to be part of the EU Superstate which is logical if you don't want to be part of the UK after all) I actually think the case for secession fails even more miserably than it did in 2014, when oil revenues were at least still reasonably high. The pandemic - how much worse would that have been without the UK's borrowing powers? How many people in Scotland currently pay tax? How many of the higher rate ones would relocate in the event of secession...what are you left with? Sunlit uplands....I don't think so. Devolution was not meant to be a means to split up the UK. The SNP should not be spending public tax money on the Constitution or Foreign Affairs as it's not in their remit...there's a point at which they will go too far I think.
littlbrowndog · 02/02/2021 11:53

Yeah Scotland one of the biggest centres for witch hunting and burning

Here we are again

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 02/02/2021 11:51

@MichelleofzeResistance

It's fucking terrifying. And I don't mean in the silly, childish sense that activists like to use it.

The British government should not allow this.

I agree...how is this stuff devolved anyway?

@AnyOldPrion

They won't have to arrest us all.

A few token arrests here and there to remind all the other women how much they have to lose - jobs, custody of their children (because what's going to happen to their children while they're in prison), family relationships (as men are leaned on to distance themselves from their wives who are in prison for a hate crime).

There will be women whose children are grown, have no husbands and can afford to take the hit. Awful as it is, I’ve thought for a while that if any truly oppressive laws are brought in, then protest through deliberate non-compliance might be the only way to demonstrate.

Suffragettes did it and if necessary, so will we.

Justhadathought · 02/02/2021 11:40

Humza has plenty of strong women in his life and he goes out of his way to support them. I think the problem is that a lot of people like him think that being right on involves adopting the trans activist stance wholesale but haven't understood women's rights and equalities well enough in the first place, so it doesn't occur to them there are contradictions

You are right. Many people, and many men ( including many gay men) simply do not really grasps what women's rights are about and what they imply. On what foundations they rest. They tend to see everything in the bland, superficial terms of 'equality'.

ScoldsBridle · 02/02/2021 11:37

I’m really looking to seeing the SNP campaign Ads for the forthcoming elections. I’m imagining lots of shots of NS high-fiving teenagers and doing other cringeworthy things to appeal to the youth vote. Possibly subliminal images of women over the age of thirty-five hanging round on street corners/outside school gates whispering and gossiping and giving filthy looks to the youth as they maliciously plot their ‘hate crimes’. Cut to NS swooping a protective cape around the young kids as she ushers them into her vision of a Canadian Scotland.

MichelleofzeResistance · 02/02/2021 11:36

I also note the national press hiding this and not reporting on it, which is actively supporting and enabling this appalling gynephobia. It should be front page news.

It’s a terrible time for women in Scotland.

It’s also scary as I think very few “normal” SNP voters have any idea about what’s going on.
