@littlbrowndog

So JC was talking in the uk parliament about freedom of speech today I think

Jacob Rees mogg apologied to her for the threats she had received

No word from either humza yousaf or sturgeon

Despicable

It's a hell of a thing when Joanna is getting more support from rees-mogg than her own party leaders.

Shameful

"In the end, the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right. For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable—what then " ( George Orwell)

Again and again they signal: they are fine with this appalling behaviour, so long as it's only directed against females

It seems, in practice, like the proposed religious exemption. All are not equal under the law at all. And 2 + 2 = 5

MichelleofzeResistance · 04/02/2021 13:45

Disgusting.

Whatdoyoudowhendemocracyfails · 04/02/2021 13:45

And here is the problem: “For those who object to Cherry’s approach to Gender Recognition Act reform, including young SNP activists, first attracted by its progressive image, who quit the party, the reshuffling was a happy start to LGBT history month."

The SNP needed activists who were attracted by its commitment to independence. That’s the party’s one job.

But of course if you achieve independence then the SNP is out of a job. All those lovely salaries and pensions....

And cross dressers. Don’t forget them

Justhadathought · 04/02/2021 13:24

So, please correct me if wrong:

He is suggesting that people who belong to religious groups or minorities are pretty much exempt from the new hate crime laws, and can continue thinking, feeling and speaking as they always have; even to ridicule those, and that, which they determine morally reprehensible?

Tootsweets23 · 04/02/2021 12:55

A passing comment - considering the state of the world I'm staggered the Scottish government is spending its efforts on this particular piece of poor legislation.

littlbrowndog · 04/02/2021 12:43

Then he said sorry. He didn’t mean that

Joanna Cherry (SNP) sacked
littlbrowndog · 04/02/2021 12:42

He said this

Joanna Cherry (SNP) sacked
littlbrowndog · 04/02/2021 12:33

So no support from yousaf.

What a great man he is

And he gets paid for this with our money

Calyx72 · 04/02/2021 12:22

Hear hear Charlieparley.

As an independence supporter who is gender critical (not trans critical or non binary critical just for women's sex based rights) I now have no-one to vote for.

I think if Scotland was independent then there would be parties from all sides of the political arena, based in Scotland and working for Scottish votes. People could vote based on their manifestos (including sex/gender stance). Then this situation would be less likely to happen.

I was going to cancel my snp membership but have decided to keep it in case of a leadership vote in the near future (I read Wings)

ThePankhurstConnection · 04/02/2021 12:12

Totally agree CharlieParley

Manderleyagain · 04/02/2021 12:11

According to press reports of the arrest/charge Joanna Cherry says 'other enquiries are ongoing'.

Michelleofzeresistance yes you're absolutely right. It's a crime whether or not it falls under the hate crime label. I'm not convinced by the notion of hate crime strands but if we are going to have them then I think they should at least follow the EA characteristics and include sex. If that was a hate crime category this could be recorded for collecting data on hate crimes because of the victim's sex, and would be considered an aggravating factor in sentencing (as I understand it).

Tootsweets23 · 04/02/2021 12:07

Great post @CharlieParley. I'm not an independence supporter at all (as you'll probably guess from my posts!) but can appreciate your position. It is utterly galling and so short sighted. It also encourages a flank of independence supporters to imagine Scotland as some sort of left wing nirvana when it really isn't, it has a diversity of opinions like many countries and actually according to various studies Scots hold similar positions to the English on many issues such as taxation, capital punishment, immigration etc etc. The intolerance for any differing opinion is quite terrifying and turns off potential independence voters. Plus also, suggests the Laura's of this world will be in for a nasty surprise when an independent Scotland votes in a conservative government at some point in the future.

I'm might sick of nice middle class women happily giving away women's rights, safe in the knowledge they are unlikely to ever be in a prison with a Karen White.

As for this sentence "For those who object to Cherry’s approach to Gender Recognition Act reform, including young SNP activists, first attracted by its progressive image, who quit the party, the reshuffling was a happy start to LGBT history month." Brilliant - celebrating the demotion of a campaigning lesbian as a great start to LGBT history month is really quite something.

ArabellaScott · 04/02/2021 11:57

I find it extraordinary that a man would have the utter gall to tell women off for their concern over women's rights.

That's the end point of this ideology, though.

MichelleofzeResistance · 04/02/2021 11:50

if it comes to the decision between a UK with the Equality Act and an independent Scotland without, they will choose the former. And they are bloody furious about being forced to make such a choice.

Very much this.

HubertHerbert · 04/02/2021 11:49

Exactly CharlieParley.

I've always wanted Independence. But if it comes down to this, it'll be a no.

CharlieParley · 04/02/2021 11:42

@Tootsweets23

That Laura Waddell article... ShockShock more evidence that there isn't the intellectual heft in the SNP to manage the current devolved government let alone begin to manage the process of setting up an independent country.
Her attitude and that of her side of the independence movement is why independence is still a ways away (or forever). The notion that independence isn't worth winning unless the resulting state is a far-left nirvana is not only preposterous, it's alienating many so-called "soft no" voters who need to be persuaded for any new referendum to be won.

An independent Scotland would have the policies and politics of all of its electorate, not just the far left.

And the opposing argument to Laura not wanting an independent Scotland where vulnerable minorities are not protected (in this case actually that means privileged over women) is that most of us do not want to live in a state where women's sex-based rights have been abolished.

Since I started campaigning to uphold our existing rights, I've lost count of the number of hard-core independence supporters I've met who told me that if it comes to the decision between a UK with the Equality Act and an independent Scotland without, they will choose the former. And they are bloody furious about being forced to make such a choice.

And as it is these women who do most of the grunt work (as in most political campaigns), that army of unpaid, dedicated female volunteers who are the backbone of the movement, you piss them off at your peril.

Because what Laura is saying is that unless self-id is realised, she doesn't want independence. And what she doesn't count on is the majority of us who say: then let's not be independent. At least then we're not erasing women's sex-based rights.

MichelleofzeResistance · 04/02/2021 11:38

It doesn't need a new and exciting name to be a crime, (and this lot are working on misogyny being something that favours male people and works against female people anyway.)

It is a crime. Making sexual violence threats to anyone is a crime. CPS have taken communications offenses to court for merely retweeting a bloody limerick ffs.

All the police and the Scots govt need to do is enforce the law to work impartially as it was intended to do, inclusive of and without prejudice towards female people.

Banner headline breaking news on BBC news channel.

BowlerHatPowerHat · 04/02/2021 11:12

From what I can see the times are calling it sexual violence threats.
We hear a lot of female MPs get abuse online. I wish more of them would report it to the police (if they don't already). Even if they can't be caught at least there would be a record of all this shit.
