Take a drink - another drinks company goes ultra-woke.

The points about the futility of oat milk in porridge and it basically being 21st century gruel are excellent. I have no answer to them Grin and now I’m asking myself if I need oat milk at all?

It tickles me enormously if a campaign that supposed to encourage me to buy and use oat milk actually has the effect of turning a previous oat milk user away from it entirely 😂

Oh dear, Oatly. Might turn out to be a bit of a Ratners moment. Probably best to stick to the dairy replacements and sidestep the moral proclamations.

newyearnewname123 · 01/02/2021 13:35

Haven't rtft. Has anyone else been getting Oatly ads on Facebook? Also massively patronising. I've blocked them.

Yep, same here, I have switched to a glass bottle oat milk delivery.

TheFnozwhowasmirage · 01/02/2021 13:31

Ha ha Derxa do you mean Gareth Wynn Jones on FB? I follow him and he's had a right go at Oatly for their inaccurate propoganda in the past week. They picked the wrong man to upset there.Grin He has a huge following and can't be fooled by their 'facts'.
We love dairy in this house,so no danger of us ever trying their slop. As another poster said, isn't it just gruel? Same as what used to be doled out in work houses? And people are paying £1.80 a litre for it? Astonishing.

@SophocIestheFox

What I’m finding very helpful about companies who mindlessly virtue signal is that it helps clue me in that they may not have anything substantive going on in terms of their corporate social responsibility, and they’re (consciously or not) deflecting from that.

With the controversies highlighted upthread, Oatly seem to be firmly in this camp.

It helps me find companies that actually do align with the relevant ethical values that I’m looking for: no palm oil in my peanut butter, fair trade in my coffee and sugar, no sweatshops in my clothing, no deforestation in my milk substitutes etc. Whether a beverage producer endorses my position on pronouns is utterly irrelevant. They can console themselves that I’m a hopeless dinosaur with no social conscience if they like, it’s their bottom line that will suffer when they find out they’re wrong!

Yes, everything you said.

As the shopper for a vegan family who previously bought Oatly by the case we will be switching thanks to what I have learned here.

Handily enough I have plenty of oatmeal and a good blender.

My eldest has also requested a different alternative to dairy so I will get on with investigating that suggestion.

What on earth are they thinking? Ads are beyond twattish and annoying. It would make me switch to drinking milk...

PotholeParadies · 01/02/2021 12:56

Me too. I'm intrigued by the Oato, now I've found out it can be delivered in glass bottles. I'm the only vegan of the household; the rest of the family are dairy-consumers, so we have a milkman order to reduce our plastic consumption. If I could reduce my personal consumption of tetrapaks, I'd be very happy about that.

Triphazards · 01/02/2021 12:54

Is it an extra-thin version of gruel?

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 01/02/2021 12:51

Thanks for the Oato link, and the info about Glebe Farm oat milk. I’ll give them a try.

Flippin · 01/02/2021 12:37

Uh-oh another Oatly household here. Plenty of alternatives for us, thankfully

Frodont · 01/02/2021 12:36

The Moma barista is just as nice.

I am not particularly bothered about pronouns (sorry!) but I found the ageism quite cruel.

BoogieFeet · 01/02/2021 12:29

Oh well, no more Oatly Barista for me then and it’s one of my weekly purchases. At least it’ll save me a few quid. Don’t these companies realise who actually buys their products? I doubt next year my then teenage DS will want to be responsible for the choice/purchase of fake milk or anything else for that matter. There’s an outside chance that if I stopped buying pizza/ice cream he might become interested, but not at a brand level, and he wouldn’t be offering to pay for it...

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 01/02/2021 12:15

They have blundered into a complex debate about trans politics with no thought about how their customer base will react.
Ageist crap and as usual not a thought for the female customers /parent base who actually buy this stuff.

KellyanneConway · 01/02/2021 11:50

My 23 year old daughter buys her own oat milk (we have a milkman). She loves me and does not give a shit how "woke" I am. She will continue to buy whichever oat milk is the cheapest and situated in the most convenient location.

Justhadathought · 01/02/2021 11:34

I have never bought any of their products. I am glad this is the case

I have been buying their barista range for over a year or so now......it seems the most popular too. The shelf is often empty of it. However, a few other companies have woken up to this and have developed their own barista ranges, including Alpro, M&S and others

Vermeil · 01/02/2021 11:05

Oatly seem to be using a series of terrible tumblr level articles in the Graun as advertising atm. They keep popping up on fb and the comment ratio is baaaaaaad. I’ve even reported a couple for their horrendous ageism. I’m really hoping Oatly get burned for it, they must be turning off so many potential customers in a desperate grab for woke points.

peak2021 · 01/02/2021 10:59

I have never bought any of their products. I am glad this is the case.

I want to be known by my name.

Harmarsuperstar · 01/02/2021 10:44

I'm the (mid 40s) vegan in our house. My son would much prefer cow's milk but I buy various plant milks including oatly (son lives the chocolate one).
Oatly, it's the uncool parents who do the shopping. Have a bit of respect. I won't be buying oatly again I'm afraid.

Justhadathought · 01/02/2021 10:41

Do children and teens read The Guardian? Most people whose parents came of age in the 90s mostly won't be that old yet. I would have thought the parents themselves were more The Guardian's age demographic

Indeed! And do they buy Oatly? at £1.80 a carton it is not cheap...and it is me doing all of the buying in our household.

DeaconBoo · 01/02/2021 10:40

@PegLegAntoine

That’s the first time I’ve ever seen woke used as a positive word.
I actually hate the use of it as a putdown. It's not really any different from "political correctness" before it became a right-wing sneer. "Woke" originated with the Black community iirc and means being politically aware and pro social justice. There's nothing wrong with being woke, it's like "doing good" but it's somehow bad to be a "do-gooder"! It's the fact that being politically aware has now become linked, in some cases, with aggressive silencing movements and now, as we are seeing, anti-women movements. But that's the politics themselves, not "being aware" of them or wanting to effect social change.

Sorry bit garbled but hope you get the gist.

MichelleofzeResistance · 01/02/2021 10:34

Sigh.

'K.

Another freshly politicised product I shan't be voting for. Have a nice life Oatly.

MarshaBradyo · 01/02/2021 10:34

Idiots

iguanadonna · 01/02/2021 10:30

Oatly has a nasty bitter aftertaste.

Now I know why.

I've been buying alternatives for a while now, and shan't be tempted back.

zanahoria · 01/02/2021 10:28

The profit on Oatley must be astronomical, mainly water, oats are about the cheapest food to buy —75p a kilo in the shops, then a few very minor ingredients.
