Although I suppose if you don't agree with AWS, they are more likely to disappear if they are bat shit crazy.

I did note that some of the strongest supporters of this were labour men who had strongly opposed AWS. Funny that.

DaisiesandButtercups · 28/01/2021 18:59

It was devastating that none of the women in the Labour leadership contest had the critical thinking skills and courage to stand up for women’s rights. Not one of them were of the right calibre to be a party leader.

StocksAndScares · 28/01/2021 18:58

If RLB is gender critical yet publically saying the opposite, then she isn't someone I want on our side.

She's no better than a Tory with that attitude.

Floisme · 28/01/2021 18:48

@nauticant

Starmer is being useless over this issue but that statement dates from October 2019, or earlier, when Jeremy Corbyn was leader.
Ah. OK thank you. Not promising that it's still up but, to be fair, we've probably got stuff older than that on our work website. Guess I'll carry on hoping for a miracle a bit longer.
NorthernIrishFeminist · 28/01/2021 18:44

Honesty I would prefer no AWS than that travesty

merrymouse · 28/01/2021 18:37

But if they must have them then I'm fine with this statement.

Because...?

Although I suppose if you don't agree with AWS, they are more likely to disappear if they are bat shit crazy.

fakenina · 28/01/2021 18:34

when I say she is GC I mean she knows full well genderism is bullshit, the commitment to womens rights part of being GC not so much.

never underestimate the duplicitious nature of politics

Also I know for a fact RLB is gender critical, people I know well have spoke to her about it.

Really?!

GintyMcGinty · 28/01/2021 18:26

I think all women shortlists should be binned. I think they've had their day and it's no longer the best way of getting better representation.

But if they must have them then I'm fine with this statement.

merrymouse · 28/01/2021 18:25

@cheeseismydownfall

The thing that really boils my piss in all of this is that the driving reason for AWS is the recognition of the need for women's specific SEX-BASED needs to be adequately represented parliament - health care, maternity rights, employment rights etc etc etc. Basically the things that make natal females completely distinct from transwomen.

AWS do not exist to make sure there are enough people in the House of Commons with long hair and pretty dresses.

FFS

This, and also the fact that the structure of parliament puts specific barriers in the way of women, e.g. lack of accommodation of women who give birth while in office.

It's striking that many successful female politicians (e.g. Nicola Sturgeon, Theresa May) don't have children, while the last 4 male PMs (Blair, Brown, Cameron, Johnson) have had very young children in office, 3 children actually being born while their father was PM.

Some female MPs have partners who take on most domestic duties (e.g. Jess Philips) but there are far more male MPs with 'party wives'.

I think sometimes female politicians would rather pretend that this isn't a problem because they see it as a weakness. However you can't hope to have equal representation in parliament if you don't confront these issues.

andyoldlabour · 28/01/2021 18:21

The closest Labour got to having a woman in charge, was when Harriet Harman was deputy leader for eight years, and assumed temp-orary leader when Ed Miliband resigned.
Now they are in a big hole, all digging furiously. They haven't got a clue.

fakenina · 28/01/2021 18:20

To be fair Rebecca Long Biley and Lisa Nandy were shit,
they managed to get duped in to signing a document that said women dident exist and if they caught anyone saying otherwise they were going to kick them out of their gang.
If only there had been some way of knowing before hand that they were ailinating most ofthe british public. Oh yeah... the power of reading and thinking! That would have done it.

Also I know for a fact RLB is gender critical, people I know well have spoke to her about it.
What an absolute cowardly shit show (grovelling dident do her much good tho did it, you'd think people would learn lessons)

Labour have never elected a woman leader.

Margaret Beckett was the first woman to run in 1994, she came third out of three.

Dianne Abbott ran in 2010, she came fifth out of five.

Yvette Cooper and Liz Kendall ran in 2015, they came third and fourth.

Rebecca Long Bailey and Lisa Nandy came second and third last year

So six women have run and not one has even received more votes than a man

Violetparis · 28/01/2021 18:08

I have more respect for people who actually do believe TWAW than politicians who don't but keep quiet while woman like Rosie Duffield are subjected to rape threats and abuse.

@JustSpeculation

"Anyone attempting to breach Labour Party rules and subvert the intention of All Women Shortlists, women’s officers or minimum quotas for women will be dealt with via our established safeguards, selection procedures and disciplinary measures."

I remember being "dealt with" at school...

What exactly do they imagine their 'established safeguards' are? with self ID there can be no safeguards, thats the whole point.

Violetparis · 28/01/2021 17:59

I'm not sure why people seem to think it is only the far left who support this nonsense, what about Lisa Nandy, Jess Philips, Lib Dems, SNP. I was going to vote for Lisa Nandy in the Labour leadership election until she signed the trans pledge. In the end I didn't bother voting and have left the party.

Floisme · 28/01/2021 17:57

So just to clarify: that sliver of a concession in the 2019 manifesto, where they undertook to protect single sex spaces (although they didn't spell out what they meant by single sex) and on the basis of which they got my vote again - that's gone?
And yet they also say they haven't changed their policyConfused?

cheeseismydownfall · 28/01/2021 17:55

They've fallen into that habit that TRA activists have of labelling working class, disabled, black women as somehow not primarily women - but as types of women. We are supposed to believe that biological males can be just another type of woman.

That's a really good observation, I hadn't really cottoned on to that before. It is such a sly trick, tacking something controversial onto the end of a list of things that everyone understands and agrees with. Putting things in a list together to imply that they are a group of things with the same characteristics.

Just like sticking the T on to LGB really.

zanahoria · 28/01/2021 17:52

anyone except transwomen and you can become one of those by self declaration

Whatsnewpussyhat · 28/01/2021 17:48

Labour are discriminating against women on the basis of their sex.

OhHolyJesus · 28/01/2021 17:47

This and Liz Truss are making a Tory out of me. Never, ever thought I'd say it.

Me too.

Now that’s a statement I can get behind :(

I spoilt my ballot last GE, time before held my nose and voted Labour. At this rate I’ll be getting very drunk and voting Tory next time Envy SadAngry
