Personal statement condemning transphobia in response to the number of young members leaving and giving this as their reason.

That statement is terrifying.

Justhadathought · 29/01/2021 10:17

Seems like there is a push on to lockdown the twaw position once and for all. Scary stuff. Given the historic high rates of violence against women in Scotland I just cant see how anyone cannot see how offensive and dangerous it is

Given the seeming fervour in Scotland for Independence, it also seems that ever other consideration pales into insignificance. The same in England, where tribal hatred of the Tories is the main motivating factor for most on the left.

It is not too difficult to picture an independent Scotland, post break-up of the U.K; not only having to prove it has the means to join the EU/Euro zone ( not a given); but significantly impoverished, and with a crazed trans agenda to boot.

Oh my goodness - banned from campaigning to remove rights that only exist in Stonewalls imagination! That’s a tricky one. So Liz Truss (or a QC say), confirming that the EA 2010 explicitly doesn’t automatically give trans people the right to use the facilities of their choice is transphobic..

Do the people that write these things (and the people that nod them through) have any grip on reality?

According to that is there anything that is not transphobia? its nuts.

ArabellaScott · 29/01/2021 09:44

That statement is like a pastel fever dream, ItsAll. Be quite stunning if the SNP adopted it ...

  • excellent Spectator article from Stephen Daisley.
ArabellaScott · 29/01/2021 09:37

Interesting statement, little

'The protection of women's rights is vital. However'

Can you imagine any other issue being dismissed with that wee 'however'?

Interested to see they are going to provide a definition of transphobia. That will be useful. Confusion & misunderstandings over terms is not helping the issue at all.

I asked a TRA how they define a transwoman the other day and they said 'as a woman'.

Which doesn't really inspire great confidence in their thinking ability.

WouldBeGood · 29/01/2021 09:31

I see talk on Twitter of there being a suspicion that the leadership will try to add a definition of transphobia, at the NEC tomorrow, which Joanna Cherry could not sign up. So a further attempt to get shot of her?

WouldBeGood · 29/01/2021 09:21

But I’m really glad to see newspapers calling this out.

WouldBeGood · 29/01/2021 09:20

The problem is, i think, that ordinary Indy supporters don’t know much about all this, and will just vote SNP anyway.

I think the TWAW thing is all so crazy sounding that people just don’t believe it.

Dozer · 29/01/2021 07:28

Statements in the press don’t define what opinions or policies Nicola Sturgeon regards as ‘transphobic’.

Her statement seems to imply that women wanting to retain single sex services and facilities, sports are ‘transphobic’.

derxa · 29/01/2021 07:26

@Selkiesarereal

Has anyone just watched bbc Scotland news tonight reporting on this issue? Absolutely appalling as it covered a personal account from someone called Teddy, didn’t catch what gender they identified as but clearly supportive of trans rights but no personal account from a woman, such biased reporting. It was so bad that even my dh commented on it.
It was appalling.
iguanadonna · 29/01/2021 06:52

I'd would be so delighted to see Cherry as the next SNP leader. So much brain.

She's one of the very few politicians I'd be genuinely glad to see in any leadership position. If only Labour had managed to foster women of her calibre.

EdgeOfACoin · 29/01/2021 06:06

I grew up in a pro indy family. Most of them are completely baffled by the debate. Some who have held Nicola in high esteem are really questioning her motives in audition to this Alex Salmond scandal as well.

I'm English and don't want Scotland to leave the UK. Cynically, there is a part of me that hopes the SNP keeps banging this drum so that voters in Scotland will stop voting for them.

However, if I were a member of the SNP and opposed to the ideology, I'd start speaking out about this issue before it did any more damage to the party's credibility.

Lizzie523 · 29/01/2021 01:13

While they chase the youth vote they run the risk of losing a lot of older voters who have voted SNP all their lives are and pro indy.

Some of our family friends are MSPs in the party. Let me tell you, several of them share JC's feelings. She is not alone, although she might be the most vocal.

OvaHere · 29/01/2021 00:06

It would be more helpful and accurate if they mentioned the hideous misogyny from transactivists. The unpleasantness flows far more in the direction of women.

The fact they wilfully ignore this tells me all I need to know.

littlbrowndog · 28/01/2021 23:54

Transphobia under the guise of women’s rights from SNP are they fucking bonkers.

[quote WouldBeGood]This, where they’ve used an expert who compared TW in female spaces to women who’ve had mastectomies has really sealed my disgust for them all

Wow. That was in the Sun?

It wouldn’t get published in the Guardian.

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 28/01/2021 23:03

I’m not surprised at the BBC.

One more little boxed ticked and everyone can sleep well at bedtime again.

Raging.

WhatstheTruthRuth · 28/01/2021 23:00

Yes just watched - that report was so one-sided. Absolutely no balance to refute the claims of transphobia just Teddy getting his 15 minutes of fame AGAIN. How do BBC Scotland justify that report? I swore very, very loudly at the TV. Apparently Teddy is now doing a PhD in Trans Television but that might be a joke.

The last 24 hours has been appalling - the Labour Party’s shortlist announcement, The Feminist Library nonsense and this debacle with the SNP and the First Minister. I feel quite defeated.

littlbrowndog · 28/01/2021 22:57

BBC bias as ever
