Rachel Rooney who wrote a delightful book about children feeling comfortable with their bodies has been described as 'hateful' by author Philip Pullman in response to a tweet by Clara Vulliamy. Rooney has written about this on Twitter. I'm so upset for her:

@inkylines

CV talks about a son and a daughter in early interviews, now she has two daughters...
I have just verified this with a quick search.

This is the 'Susie Green' effect in action. When one is so invested in the ideology and has taken one's own children down this path, there is no going back, and all one can do is try to persuade the world (and possibly oneself) that one has done the right thing.

I believe that this is one of the reasons for the trans lobby being so keen to get into schools and recruit as many children as possible. When nearly everyone has a 'trans child' in their family (if not their own child, another relative such as a nephew, niece or cousin) it makes it so much harder to argue against the ideology because so many more people are personally involved with such children.

Rachel's book sounds absolutely lovely. My DC are all a bit old for it now so I've bought a copy just for me 😊.

Thanks Philip Pullman, if it wasn't for your pathetic bullying behaviour, I probably would never have heard of it.

Siameasy · 06/12/2020 20:40

I’d never heard of CV but reading between the lines she may have had a “trans” child and obviously those who have a “trans” child tend to be extremely invested in the ideology.

(I also don't get why there aren't any trans allies up in arms after the KB case because of the appalling lack of diligence that seems to have been present in the medical care of gender non-conforming children. Lack of evidence of longterm effects, poor data gathering, no following up of patients - that's what they should be furious about. These kids deserve much better).

Yup. Keira was “trans” at one point. One page I follow on FB was called hateful for sharing an article about her. I give up. This is all they have now. “Mummy you’re a poo I hate you”

Tootsweets23 · 06/12/2020 20:40

Well thanks PP I have now just bought all of the books by Rachel Rooney in my children's age range. I already had my body is me, it is a delightful book to encourage kids to love who they are. Only a truly terrible person would be offended by the message. What is their alternative? "Doubt and question your body and take experimental drugs/cut off healthy body parts?". These people are mad and bad.

Helmetbymidnight · 06/12/2020 20:39

Has anyone been able to see CV's original tweet?

Defaultname · 06/12/2020 20:38

Interesting moral compass, Mr. Pullman.

No word of thanks that the Court of Protection has extended, well, protection to those kids?

Whydoelephants · 06/12/2020 20:28

I know very little about this debate but can highly recommend this book. I bought after seeing a thread on Mumsnet about the author being bullied which I can’t stand. The book is my sons absolute favourite and we read it frequently, he joins in with all the words and it fills my heart with joy to hear him saying such positive affirming things. How anyone could possibly see it as anything but a joyful positive book for tiny children is beyond me.

Europilgrim · 06/12/2020 20:27

I really don't understand how anyone, even the most vehement supporter of puberty blockers could have a problem with Rachel Rooney's lovely, positive book. Confused

im also blocked by clara vuillamy who i dont know and despite never saying anything on twitter except about books 🤷🏼‍♀️ what is the matter with these people?

Siameasy · 06/12/2020 20:18

My daughter is 5 she loves stuff like that I also gave a donation I cannot stand bullies

People on Facebook calling the Observer article about Keira “hateful” has also really hacked me off today

inkylines · 06/12/2020 20:17

skandalous · 06/12/2020 20:15

There is a video of Rachel reading the book.

I aam not the intended audience, but I found it charming and cute and can't think of it as controversial in any way at all - just suggestng that the reader should take care of their body.

TRAs seem to be all about guilt by association - the crime seems to be who published it rather than what is in it?

Siameasy · 06/12/2020 20:11

So mean spirited.
Right I’m buying it now hes said that.

NewlyGranny · 06/12/2020 20:05

The TT stickers that outraged CV with their cruelty included messages such as:

It's OK for girls to play with trucks, boys with dolls;
No child is born in the 'wrong body';
Children have a right to privacy from the opposite sex;
Kids shouldn't be taught at school that they can choose whether to be a boy or a girl;
Medical sex change treatment for children is an experiment;
70% of children referred to UK gender clinic last year were girls.

She posted about this in 2018. DfE guidance has changed since then, and the recent Keira Bell & Mrs A judicial review decision mops up a couple of the others.

Even Mermaids now say it's not about what children play with or wear. It might be time for some hasty reading and updating for some of the would-be-woke!

Which of those statements could anyone in all conscience say are hateful?

sosotired1 · 06/12/2020 20:03

Just bought a couple of copies and made a donation. So disappointed in PP...

HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 06/12/2020 19:57

Thanks for sharing Betty, that's lovely

@littlbrowndog

From Twitter

Phillip Pullman, who wrote a trilogy about ideologically rigid, obsessive adults cutting away essential parts of children before they'd had the chance to reach adulthood and settle into themselves.

Absolutely this. The cognitive dissonance in this man is astonishing.

I was given a copy of ‘My Body Is Me’ at the MCR detrans event.

My littlest girl was slightly over the age range for it but I left it in her room. She brought it to me a few days later because she wanted to read it aloud.

She was absolutely delighted by all the little illustrations, especially the wheelchair ones, as she spent some time using a wheelchair after treatment for her life threatening immune disorder. For a year, she had a Hickman line, it frightened and disgusted her. The drugs that saved her life altered her appearance to the point that for a while, she was completely unrecognisable.
Once, at the hospital, she burst into tears at the sight of herself in the mirror at the back of the lift.

This little book, for kids even younger than her, helped her put some of her feelings in perspective.

It’s a lovely book.

Phillip Pullman can fuck right off and then fuck off some more.

donquixotedelamancha · 06/12/2020 19:52

Well done Phillip Pullman. I can't think of a better way to generate attention for a book.

It's so hard for authors to get noticed but he's done Rachel Rooney a big favour (though, of course, not intentionally)

Thingybob · 06/12/2020 19:45

Rachel's response is so classy, I hope it makes PP and CV feel awful.

"Last night I had a fight with a shadowy philosopher sitting on a rock because he refused to join me in singing 'Three Little Maids from School', on the grounds that there were only two of us. So I threw him off his rock, at which point I fell out of bed and woke up."

Oh, I think you were woke-up ages before that, Phillip.

Anyone see a problem with the Three Little Maids apart from there only being two of them?

Clymene · 06/12/2020 19:35

I think it's between 3-6? It's a really lovely book

EdgeOfACoin · 06/12/2020 19:27

What age group is the book aimed at? I am buying presents for a 21-month-old child.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 06/12/2020 19:19

It’s reminded me to buy one for my little great niece. I was a bit wary (they live in wokesville) but they all love Harry Potter and her birthday party was HP themed so I think it’s safe...
