Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Urgent action for those in Scotland

The amazing Johann Lamont has put in an amendment to the forensic medical services bill. This is a really important piece of legislation which seeks to make the process easier for rape victims and we support it. We are concerned, however, that although the women who testified that access to a female examiner was the most important concern, the bill still refers to the gender - instead of sex - of the examiner.

Sex, unlike gender, is defined in the Equality Act and there is provision for recruitment under schedule 9. We believe that a small change will ensure that there is no ambiguity.

We would urge anyone from Scotland to please write to all eight of their MSPs and ask them to support the motion.

As Susan Dalgety reported in the Scotsman:
Her amendment may be only six words long – “for the word ‘gender’ substitute ‘sex’” – but it gets to the heart of the current debate about who counts as a woman.

“Women should be able to choose the sex of the person who conducts the investigation,” Johann told me last night. “This is a key test for the Parliament, which is committed to rooting action in the understanding of experience. Women courageously and powerfully spoke up so that others might fare better than them.

“The amendment is tiny but would be a huge step in listening to survivors. The committee was convinced. The Parliament should be too.”

Six words can make a world of difference.

Done.

Bloody love La Lamont. Absolutely fearless and so bright she sparkles.

Wish she'd set up a women's party with Joan McAlpine and the GC minsters in other parties.

ArabellaScott · 07/12/2020 14:22

Phhhh no idea!

NonnyMouse1337 · 07/12/2020 14:00

I might give my second vote to the new ISP. They are supportive of women's rights.

No idea about main vote yet. Will have to see how things develop over next few months.

Morechocolateneeded · 07/12/2020 13:47

While on this thread - can I ask who people are thinking of voting for in the Scottish elections? I'm at the stage where I don't think I can bring myself to vote for anyone, but maybe that would be the wrong thing to do? Can't bring myself to vote conservative because of Brexit etc. But everyone else is throwing women under the bus in favour of Trans lies?

ArabellaScott · 07/12/2020 13:30

I have done, Morechocolate, all of them!

RunningWild, I totally agree, I felt fucking affronted that this even needs to be asked. I am so, so fucking angry. How dare these bastards try and pull this off?

RunningWild12 · 07/12/2020 13:21

I wrote to mine. I felt like I was living on my knees, having to beg elected members to prioritise women’s sex based rights at a most traumatising time in their life over men who say they’re women.

I don’t imagine the amendment will go through. The SNP and much of civic Scotland are the main advocates of genderism in the country. The distance between the rulers and ruled is vast, the contempt the former have for the latter is deep.
Please do email your MSPs about the issue. It is all we can do at the moment.

Morechocolateneeded · 07/12/2020 13:17

Arabella - can you write to your regional MSPs too - you can write to 7 or 8 MSPs, not just 1. Write to Them tells you who they are and you just have to type in the content once.

Morechocolateneeded · 07/12/2020 13:16

This really is beyond crap. Everything and everyone is being thrown under the bus.

ArabellaScott · 07/12/2020 12:30

Have sent, but don't hold out much hope for my constituency MSP, who is an arrogant arse. Will update if I receive any responses.

ScoldsBridle · 07/12/2020 12:03

Am going to do this - thanks for the tip about Write to Them!

Morechocolateneeded · 07/12/2020 11:51

It will be awful if they sell women who have been raped down the river for the sake of trans ideology. Such a betrayal of women in Scotland.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 07/12/2020 10:42

I always use WriteToThem too, very easy (bump!)

334bu · 07/12/2020 08:28

Must remember write to them for next time.

Morechocolateneeded · 07/12/2020 08:19

Done this through WriteToThem - v easy way of doing it.

NonnyMouse1337 · 07/12/2020 01:18

Thank you. I've emailed all my MSPs.

Morechocolateneeded · 06/12/2020 23:23

.

purplebutterflybiscuits · 06/12/2020 19:24

I have just emailed my local MSPs. Thank you so much to For Women Scotland for bringing things like this to my attention.

SusanSmithFWS · 06/12/2020 18:10

Thank you all. We think party groups will be discussing tomorrow, so really important to keep emailing.

It's a good thought thinkingaboutLangCleg but I think this is more about everyone in Scotland lobbying their individual MSPs to vote on Thursday.

I just want to remind everyone not to just contact their constituency MSP but to also write to all seven of the regional/list MSPs, as they'll be voting on this too. Enter your postcode here to find out who they are, along with their email addresses.

I'm hoping lots of emails will be waiting for them first thing Monday morning!

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 06/12/2020 01:14

Is it worth writing from outside Scotland, or would that be automatically discarded?
