Perhaps we can quit with the 'dark money' narrative now.

I was a little surprised to see a grant from Lush Charity Pot in there. Perhaps as a company they aren't a total write off after all.

@StillAHarpie

jj1968 it is untrue to say there is no information to say who they are as individuals, that info is provided here womansplaceuk.org/2020/02/11/we-are-womans-place-uk/

Out of curiosity how many false statements/accusations have to be disproved before you feel embarrassed?

They are the founders, there's no information what role they play in governance, if any. Who is responsible for the money?

Oh I see, you want to understand the legal basis on which they would bring a claim if they actually wanted to do so? You are concerned that they might not have one? One for the lawyers I imagine.

If they did have a legal basis would you feel better about it?

334bu · 30/11/2020 23:31

💤😪

jj1968 · 30/11/2020 23:23

@PaleBlueMoonlight

I don’t get it, why do you care if WPUK or any other organisation is or is not a charity? Are you worried for the people donating?

Why do you think all organisations which are not charities or companies are corrupt? Or is it just this one?

I'm not worried either way. I don't care if all the money is going in someone's back pocket or they dodge their taxes, that's up to them and the people who give them money. I do care about them issuing legal threats to silence criticism when they have no grounds to as an unincorporated association.
PaleBlueMoonlight · 30/11/2020 23:17

Trans organisations that are charities I would expect to do what they needed to do to keep their charitable status. Those which are not, I would not. If they said they were a charity, but weren’t, then that would be a problem.

How I might feel about what the organisations actually do and how they behave is quite separate. It would probably interest me if they were a charity and breached charity law.

Apparently jj doesn’t care. Not one bit. Totally disinterested in anything to do with WPUK. Would rather watch paint dry than spend time thinking about them.

@WildishBambino

But Unincorporated Associations can also have trading or business objectives or carry on commercial activities. Perfectly legal and therefore organisations use this structure. The government positively encourages it.

Its individual members are legally responsible for all the acts and omissions of the organisation. In many ways the people who run WPUK have more personal legal liability than someone working for a charity or Ltd company as WPUK has no separate legal personality from its members.

Yes but that doesn't get them out of reporting responsibilities for tax purposes. Perhaps they've done that and they've got a different set of accounts they haven't showed us because from what's on the website it's very difficult to establish whether they have made a profit or not. Or where any money might end up, there's no information given on their constitution. Or who they even are as individuals. It's not very transparent is it? And if a trans organisation behaved the same way they would get slaughtered on here.

@Deltoids1

Marvellous, thank you. Have you reported them to HMRC for trading though?
They are free to trade, they are a charity, and prior to that they were a company. If you look on the annual reports on their website it also shows they paid Corporation Tax.
Deltoids1 · 30/11/2020 22:31

£159k from training! I wonder if they paid their trainers? Do they pay tax on the profits from that trading income?

@Deltoids1

Gendered Intelligence only registered with the Charity Commission last year, and I presume prior to that they too were an unincorporated association like WPUK. Where are the baseless accusations levelled at them? Where is the demand to see their accounts? You could argue they do actually trade as no doubt they will charge companies for their training courses.
Prior to that they were a Community Interest Company and prior to that a Company Ltd by Guarantee. You can view all their filings with Companies House going back to 2008 here: find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/06617608/filing-history

jj1968 · 30/11/2020 21:53

@MoonPomme

A lefty group funded by the far right. Well I never.
I have never in my life claimed WPUK were funded by the far right.
GCAcademic · 30/11/2020 21:51

OMG, they are far left now!

Do you have zero self respect? Please find some. I can't imagine making myself look so utterly stupid, even under the cloak of anonymity.

MoonPomme · 30/11/2020 21:48

Do you realise how ridiculous you are?
I would say you couldnt make it up, but clearly, you can.

jj1968 · 30/11/2020 21:29

@334bu

God now we're all loony left groups. As my gran used to say "ma heid' s birling" with all these changes of direction.
Of course WPUK are a lefty group, they've never made any secret about that. All the founders have a background in far left/socialist politics.
thewaybackwhenmachine · 30/11/2020 21:28

Totally randomly but I've been on MN well over a decade and way back in the day there was a poster called something like jjbaby who was trolling what were then called the 'pram huns' on MN and was collecting baby items for what they later admitted were for their teddies to use.

Nowt so weird as Jjs.

jj1968 · 30/11/2020 21:19

And as I said I don't really care. A lot of lefty organisations that come out of the Trot mileu behave like this because it gives those running it absolute power and they don't want to be burdened by things like accountability and regulations. In fact it's central to a lot of their ideology as political vanguardists leading the working class (or women in this case) to revolution.

I just think it's interesting to speculate on what the reaction would be if groups like GIRES and Mermaids behaved the same way.

jj1968 · 30/11/2020 21:15

@BettyDuKeiraBellisMyShero

Quite. So why on earth did you invite us to make the comparison between the 3 year old WPUK (whose figures we can all see) and the 25 year old Mermaids, (whose figures for the first 20 years We cannot see)?

You make no sense, JJ.

Because there were figures. Mermaids have been a registered charity since 1999 and as such would have been required to make annual reports to the Charity Commission. They were regulated, not just an unincorporated association whose idea of due dilliegnce is sticking up some list of outgoing/incomings on their website and calling that their accounts. WPUK are not registered with anyone, either the Charity Commission or Companies House. They are presumably governed by a constitution nobody has ever seen. All that money being donated could end up in someone's back pocket quite legally depending on what that constitution says (if it even exists). If their legal threats have been about personal litigation then that's exactly what's happened. If they haven't then they had no grounds to issue such threats because as an unincorporated association they have no power to sue for defamation.
