Virginity check? WHY!!!

I have the YOUGOV survey app

And this morning I'm alarmed by this question... can anyone shed some light on why this service maybe needed? Under what circumstances? It's honestly floored me

Virginity check? WHY!!!

@Hulo

Hmm. Do you reckon this examination would be done on the grounds of biological sex or gender identity?
It's an examination to check whether the human is intact, so it would only apply to people with a hymen.

I do try to see both sides of the trans debate, but I don't think it helps when people try to drag it into threads that have nothing to do with trans issues.

Shows quite a bonkers lack of understanding of what the female body actually looks like and how it works

And how powerful sexist convictions can be.

NewlyGranny · 27/11/2020 12:10

No NHS clinic should be offering that sort of 'test'! And it should be banned in private clinics, too, though no doubt it would be ridiculously easy to get round such a ban.

People should know that not every girl is born with a hymen and that a score of oridnary activities - horse-riding, gymnastics, athletics - can rupture them, not to mention tampon use. What are the consequences for young women who 'fail' the test?!

LadyWaiting · 27/11/2020 12:10

I would have clicked on Strongly oppose as I read the question incorrectly as others have pointed out.

SophocIestheFox · 27/11/2020 12:09

Vile, vile misogyny through and through. It’s quite popular in a Gulf state I used to live in, as are operations to replace a “lost” hymen.

Shows quite a bonkers lack of understanding of what the female body actually looks like and how it works. I broke mine horse riding when I was 10.

It should absolutely be banned, but more importantly we should all be pointing out how backwards it is at every opportunity.

carolebaskinfedhimtothetigers · 27/11/2020 12:08

@Sparklfairy @MedusasBadHairDay ah crap so it is, looks like me and OP both voted the wrong way then!

MedusasBadHairDay · 27/11/2020 12:06

I suspect the figures are wrong in the poll, it's phrased really badly.

HyacynthBucket · 27/11/2020 12:05

It is sexual assualt, pure and simple, and therefore criminal. Who is prosecuted for it though?

yourhairiswinterfire · 27/11/2020 12:03

Oh God.

The first I heard about this kind of 'service' was when the rapper T.I (American) was in the news for saying he accompanies his 18 year old daughter to her gynaecology appointments to make sure her hymen isn't broken Hmm According to the article, he laughed off his 15 year old son being sexually active though.

I had no idea it was happening here. Another tool to help strengthen men's control over women's bodies.

AnotherNameForChristmas · 27/11/2020 12:02

It's a rubbish "test" anyway. Many girls "break" their hymen before being sexually active.

And that's a rubbish question that can be easily be misread, too.

Newwayofthinking · 27/11/2020 12:02

wouldnt I mean

tinkiiev · 27/11/2020 12:02

It should be banned but religious practices like this are too deeply embedded; if it was banned, it would be done in a non-clinical setting by non- qualified people, which would be even worse.

Newwayofthinking · 27/11/2020 12:01

Using tampons can break the hymen anyway.

These tests are barbaric and should be out lawed.

I take it men would have any intrusive tests.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 27/11/2020 12:00

@Steezy

What on earth. How horrendous! I'm more shocked at 25% agree.
You are reading it the wrong way - 25% support a ban; a higher % opposes a ban Sad
Steezy · 27/11/2020 11:58

Hailtomyteeth · 27/11/2020 11:57

I had no idea this went on. It's anti-women and the examinations are abusive.

I saw that a rapper takes his daughter to have her virginity checked annually. None of his business.

I studied religions for over forty years and never noticed even one claiming virginity had to be regularly checked.

I have heard of operations to 'repair' a broken hymen but that was decades ago.

Whatwouldscullydo · 27/11/2020 11:56

How would it even work if a girl/woman needed an examination for actial medical reasons? They get some kind of " speculum not penis" stamp on a certificate?

PlanDeRaccordement · 27/11/2020 11:54

It’s mostly conservative religious families that ask for this before arranged marriages and the U.K. does have clinics providing this service. I think it should be banned. It’s a barbaric artefact that is more cultural in nature than truly religious. Too many women are born with no hymen and therefore would fail the virginity test which would then put them at risk for murder/violence.

MedusasBadHairDay · 27/11/2020 11:52

@carolebaskinfedhimtothetigers

Ugh yes I wondered the same when I saw it this morning, they're normally related to stuff in the news so I went in search of what it's about and couldn't find anything! I'm horrified by how many people have voted strongly support Angry
They're strongly supporting a ban on doing a virginity test, not strongly supporting the test itself. I want to know which group put this question forward so we can boost their work. I didn't know anywhere here offered that "service" and think there should be an outcry against it.
Aquamarine1029 · 27/11/2020 11:52

I'm wondering how many people voted incorrectly because they misread the question. The wording is rubbish.

Hulo · 27/11/2020 11:50

Hmm. Do you reckon this examination would be done on the grounds of biological sex or gender identity?

endofthelinefinally · 27/11/2020 11:49

This is widespread in certain cultures. I am surprised it isn't more widely known.

Respectabitch · 27/11/2020 11:49

That's a badly phrased question - it would be easy to miss the words "a ban" and respond the opposite way to your real views.

It's poorly worded though. It says strongly support a BAN so people may vote wrongly!
midgebabe · 27/11/2020 11:47

Does it work for men and women?
