Isn't he regarded as transphobic for refusing to use compelled speech and warning of the consequences (and proven right by Yaniv). Seems like the woke at Random House publishing are appalled that their business is based on making a profit. Peterson may not be your glass of tea but he's hardly Goebals.

@Fromage

Why are all these woke types so against freedom of speech?
Control.
ArabellaScott · 26/11/2020 19:28

I have questions.

Doesn't Peterson eat only steak and salt? I hear he's been ill recently, can't imagine why.

How is he the figurehead of the white supremacy movement, I understand he's a bit of an arse sometimes but hadn't realised he was actually advocating an Aryan takeover?

And lastly, have the staff recovered enough to issue a list of approved authors so that Random House can avoid this kind of terrible literal genocide happening ever again?

NecessaryScene1 · 26/11/2020 19:07

there's a certain delicious irony

So I gather...

Staffers Crying Over Jordan Peterson Book Cured By Forcing Them To Read Jordan Peterson Book

"It's like a miracle," said office assistant Xandy Dutheriadux. "I didn't realize how much of my time was spent on behaviors that aren't particularly useful-- such as whining and blaming others! It's time for me to get my house in order and refine my competence in order to achieve my goals! Thanks, Dr. Peterson!"

CaraDuneRedux · 26/11/2020 18:08

@DreadPirateLuna

I disagree with a lot of what JP says, he's got a very traditional view of gender roles and religion. But I do appreciate that he encourages young men to take responsibility for their own actions and stop thinking the world owes them. For that, I think he's a net good in the world.
Yes, I may find Peterson a bit trite and oversimplistic, but there's a certain delicious irony in the woke numpties personifying exactly the sort of "me, me, me wish the world is just sooooo unfair, make it so my world view is never challenged" attitudes Peterson offers a corrective to.

I enjoyed 12 Rules for Life, will reread it before the sequel and then buy the sequel.

I hope he has recovered from his horrific diazepam withdrawal.

Stripesnomore · 26/11/2020 17:38

I really hope that it is the Streisand effect. If it isn’t, it is the employer that bothers me not the employees. Why are employers selecting these people and then allowing them to carry on in this way? It is just ludicrous given how most people are treated at work.

NecessaryScene1 · 26/11/2020 17:36

Never read any Peterson myself, but I find myself assuming that anyone who gets the folx that wound up probably has something worthwhile to say.

This was an interesting article though from Louise Perry from earlier this year:

The feminist case for Jordan Peterson

I came to mock the Canadian guru but stayed to respect the depth of his thought

7Days · 26/11/2020 17:30

I'm in no way knowledgeable enough to defend Peterson, but I have heard him expand on the 'monogamy ' thing. It's more a societal view than for individuals, basically monogamy was the favoured system to prevent the high status males, chieftains, kings, etc establishing harems leaving a pool of trouble making low status males at the bottom. There are equal numbers of male and female and both sexes need to contribute to the upbringing.

So from an evo point of view, back in deep time, pair up and successfully reproduce and stop young men fighting for mating rights would have been the most successful strategy. And he believes the same instincts are with us today regardless of our modern lifestyles.

I think that's his argument anyway. It's been a while.

@Fromage

Why are all these woke types so against freedom of speech?
Because they're nasty little authoritarian bigots who don't believe that other people's ideas or opinions should be tolerated.
TeenyTinyDustinHoffman · 26/11/2020 17:07

I've not got much time for Jordan Peterson, whose ideology lacks any real consistency other than "How the world would suit me."

The first article I read of his was probably one of the less contentious ones, of the "Young people today lack resilience and don't hold themselves accountable for their actions" calibre. There were a few decent points in there, a long with a fair bit of trite hyperbole. His take: We should be responsible for our own failings, no one owes us a reward.
The next article below, also by him: The tragedy of the poor oppressed incels and how women are becoming too picky. His take: If a man cannot find a woman who'll agree to have sex with him, it is not a matter of his character or even bad luck, incels do not need to suck it up and take responsibility for themselves, women just need to stop being so picky.
Since then, I've not found much which would exactly endear me to him.

However, the grown adults crying over this is shameful.

7Days · 26/11/2020 16:58

Lol Bof

It's sad though. It came from a good place. Injustices still exist, fgs. It's just that everything has been catastrophised - for hot takes, afaics.

S00LA · 26/11/2020 16:57

@Deliriumoftheendless

"They’re not going to acknowledge the reason they're doing it is for money“ says someone who maybe used to think book publishing was about curing cancer and bringing about world peace.
😬😬😬
hamstersarse · 26/11/2020 16:56

It's so embarrassing for these people

If they had any clue what JP is actually about (free speech, basically being responsible and taking on life's cruelties) they might see the irony in what they have done

I agree with Douglas Murray on this one - the publishing house should fire the lot of them

PurpleWave · 26/11/2020 16:51

I wondered if this would be posted here when I read it this morning.

I'm horrified that actual adults with actual jobs think that it's OK to cry to get their own way at work. It literally makes me cringe.

How have they never grown up?

MaudTheInvincible · 26/11/2020 16:49

They've really made themselves look like overblown silly buggers. Maybe publishing isn't a good fit for them if they get so upset about other people writing books.

BitOfFun · 26/11/2020 16:38
- I'll warn you, it's catchy. Sums it up for me!
Beamur · 26/11/2020 16:31

@Fromage

Such a good point. We keep seeing this. Over and over again. How can the people demanding this not have any awareness of how bad this actually looks (and us!) You're not asking for a good thing here - this is authoritarian censorship over someone with a different opinion to yours. Give your head a wobble! Plurality of opinion is not an intrinsically bad thing. Insisting everyone thinks the way that you do or must be silenced, that is bad.
Gingernaut · 26/11/2020 16:16

Yeah.

Crying to their boss, trying to prevent management from doing what they're in business to do and risking their continuing employment in the middle of a pandemic where tens of thousands of people have been fired/made redundant wasn't the smartest move.

sashagabadon · 26/11/2020 16:15

Peterson is probably delighted as is the publisher. Loads of lovely free publicity to guarantee the book is a best seller.

notyourhandmaid · 26/11/2020 16:11

@Fromage

Why are all these woke types so against freedom of speech?
Extending 'hate speech' to mean almost anything is how the mental justification goes, I think.
7Days · 26/11/2020 16:09

I quite like Peterson at times. Other times I disagree - I manage my trauma about it.

Especially these days, people need to hear the bleeding obvious.

That's hardly the point though, is it.

The world is full of suffering and injustice. Some problems can't be solved. Some people can't agree how best to solve the ones that can.
Publishers will tackle all these big subjects, and there will be different staff members who have different triggers - don't put me on a book about car accidents, for example.

That's understandable. But the wailing and expectation that one or two sensitive subjects, out of a planet full of them, are what should be prioritised above all else, is just utterly narcissistic.

Me. My problems. Me, me. Doesn't project stability or perspective or competency.

user8888 · 26/11/2020 16:05

Cara I live in Canada so I can tell you the economy here is quite sluggish.

So, no, those employees do not have instant jobs if they get fired unless their friend gives them one.

We haven't handled covid better either -- I would say we are like the UK with slow/not enough testing, not testing at airports, care homes not fit for purpose. Only difference may be culturally we are accustomed to seeing face masks because we have a lot of Asians wearing them here for many years. Also we're very spread out.
