Jo Maugham (@JolyonMaugham) Tweeted:
"We waited some weeks for the BBC to be ready to cover our legal action to protect the legal rights of trans children. And the piece is up and is quite extraordinary. I'm not going to link to it because it is inaccurate and gives space to a transphobic hate group." twitter.com/JolyonMaugham/status/1330758709140729856?s=20

Which I assume refers to this piece:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55015959

And he says this about LGB Alliance, which feels stupidly for a lawyer libellous: The third point is they have quoted the so-called LGB Alliance - a dark money funded astro-turfed hate group - on the healthcare of trans teenagers. What next? Will the BBC be quoting white supremacists on whether sickle cell anaemia should be treated on the NHS?

This is clearly a personal crusade by jolyon, how it got through when it doesn't meet a number of the criteria set by the directors is baffling.

Duckwit · 23/11/2020 11:44

Interesting that it was Ben 'trans people are being denied the right to exist' Hunte that wrote this. Maybe someone has had a word in his ear about what the word 'impartiality' means.

Could someone DM me what skin in the game it is that JM has with all this - I could take a guess but I don't really know?

fatblackcatspaw · 23/11/2020 11:37

I'm fair sickened by twitter this morning and have just donated to LGB Alliance in the name of Joylon and urge others to do the same.

Abitofalark · 23/11/2020 11:33

@MillieEpple

What does astro-turfed mean?
It's political jargon and a play on the word grass roots. It's pretending there is a genuine grass roots campaign with popular support when in fact it has a hidden agenda, sponsor or financial source.

@ChazsBrilliantAttitude

I wonder if it’s worth a report to the Bar Standards Board under Core Duty 5

He states he is a Barrister on his profile and he is talking about a legal case.

I wondered about this. If this case case is live, a complaint about him could be made by LGB Alliance directly to the judge. Just need a well written intervention.
nauticant · 23/11/2020 11:30

You mean being able to create of narrative of "even the judges are against us"? Like Trump?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/11/2020 11:24

How much of this is just a PR exercise to promote his wider aims? A Judicial Review will only be granted as a last resort of there are no other avenues and the Cass review will be covering all this- e.g. that is why Keira dropped her other case.

Yes, I was thinking this too.

TyroTerf · 23/11/2020 11:21

I was a teen when breast implants and nose jobs were first leaving the domain of ‘posh celeb’ and becoming accessible.

I was lucky enough to have a most unremarkable nose, but I grew up fat and hearing feel-good stories about how liposuction helped women to feel happy and whole. I would have loved to get it - and it would have done my mental health no good whatsoever longterm, because my fatness is a result of my comorbidities and would return in time if they weren't treated.

I find it intriguing that JM and a whole host of organisations run by adults, are so invested in ensuring that children are given powerful drugs to suspend them in a pre-pubertal state.

TyroTerf · 23/11/2020 11:12

Seeing as a statistically above average number of children presenting at gender clinics are found to be on the spectrum I suspect earlier diagnosis and support for autism is something that would have a tangible effect on the GIC waiting lists.

Yep. And earlier identification of and support for the kids being sexually abused would do wonders too.

The third point of the typical trinity is lesbianism and I'm not keen on early diagnosis there (for obvious reasons) but again, support is needed for parents to stop freaking out that their kid's probably gay, and so much needs to be done culturally to stop proto-lesbians developing self-hatred.

BettyDuKeiraBellisMyShero · 23/11/2020 11:09

if you tell a kid they need surgery to be happy then they're going to fixate on that.

Absolutely. I was a teen when breast implants and nose jobs were first leaving the domain of ‘posh celeb’ and becoming accessible.

Luckily, back then, there was an absolute line that boob jobs weren’t available until you had completed natural pubertal development, by which time we were all out in the world doing first jobs, having romances, going to uni etc, so the inward focus and body hatred of the teenage years had dissipated.

It must be a massive headfuck if the social messages that are feeding your body hatred are also telling you that you must physically act on it before puberty is complete (or you will attempt or suicide).

When you look at the issues in the bigger picture, it’s absolutely obvious that the current day trans narrative is at odd with everything we know about adolescent development (and watchful waiting with psychological support, available in a timely fashion, is far more appropriate).

Gender distress in children and adolescents IS real, but transition is not the evidenced solution Jolyon and his Fishy Friends claim it to be.

Thank you littlecabbage.

Any other individuals and organisations who are willing to announce publicly actual suicide staticics?

TyroTerf · 23/11/2020 10:52

I'm not looking at his twitter cos I'm too busy spitting tacks over the BBC article.

Still, I guess this is proof that JM is incapable of analysing sex on a demographic level. And has little understanding of child development.

If you tell a kid they need surgery to be happy then they're going to fixate on that.

I feel for the one JM's championing but the kid's got a transgenderist mindset. Surgical and hormonal treatment to create a female->transsexual body is not the answer! And if it is, JM needs to be consistent and push for the NHS to provide rhinoplasty and liposuction too.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 23/11/2020 10:49

For some reason I can’t get this song out of my head.

NotBadConsidering · 23/11/2020 10:47

@Melroses

From what I have seen paediatric hormone treatment in other areas is fairly conservative. A child I know needed growth hormone and also hormone treatment to bring on sexual maturity for a different reason, and they seemed to start treatment long after her peers had finished their growth spurt and stopped when she was still quite petite. They seem to do only what is necessary so that they avoid the undesirable consequences and risks.
There is a huge dissonance here. Paediatric endocrinologists are the people you refer to when a teenager fails to go through puberty, because they know how important a process it is and how it needs happen for future wellbeing. Yet here they’re deliberately stopping teenagers going through puberty and ignoring its importance for overall human development on the basis of poor evidence and ideology.

Those involved will have to explain why at some stage.

ArcheryAnnie · 23/11/2020 10:42

I don't know about the 1970s, but there isn't such a thing as a trans child, any more than there's a [insert any ideology which shapes people's view of themselves] child - there's certainly gender nonconforming children (I was one) and children who experience dysphoria, and children who unconsciously (and often for very sound reasons) seek to escape the gendered expectations that come with puberty (and I was definitely one of these). Some of these children may grow up and be trans-identified, most will not.

It's impossible to know which small proportion of children will grow up to identify as trans as adults. Until then, it makes no sense to talk about "trans children".

WeeBisom · 23/11/2020 10:33

Gosh, this topic makes people act crazy. I remember a few months ago when jo was all “let’s hear both sides” and all about balance and now he’s practically frothing at the mouth about hate groups all because the BBC wrote an unbiased article. How is he going to be in court ? He can’t seem to bear any contrary opinion!

I also notice that he poo poos a doctor who talks about the watch and wait approach and says this goes against protocols since the 1970s. I have no idea where he is getting the idea of 1970s treatment from. I actually read up on this and in the 1970s children with dysphoria (who were tiny in number and mostly male) were treated either with the watch and wait approach or, horribly, underwent strong aversion therapy where anything girly was associated with a negative stimulus. The outcome was that the vast majority deisisted, so much so that in the 1980s the standard view in psychology was that there was no such thing as the “trans child”.

And I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again... why is the rhetoric so different for trans kids and trans adults? Trans adults: we are happy with our bodies, we don’t need to change, our penises are lady penises, it’s hateful and wrong to assume that trans people need surgery. Trans kids: we must transition fully as quickly as possible to avoid us going through the “wrong” puberty. Eh? I’m sorry, why can’t you just tell the kids there is no wrong body or puberty?

HecatesCats · 23/11/2020 10:32

JM’s only concern is to get kids on hormones quick because of the lie that is that is the best treatment.

And to equivocate about their reversibility in the process, when the NHS is now clear that little is known about the long term effects.

NotBadConsidering · 23/11/2020 10:27

Children with mental health concerns should be seen as quickly as possible and that should be within 18 weeks. That they can’t is a scandal currently prevalent across the world.

The problem is, as we al know, that the sole aim of getting into a gender clinic quickly is to start hormone treatment quickly. It’s not to be properly assessed, it’s not to treat psychological co-morbidities with appropriate therapy, it’s not to address trauma, it’s not to deal with safeguarding concerns. JM’s only concern is to get kids on hormones quick because of the lie that is that is the best treatment.

Once again, not a single public acknowledgment of the harm this pathway does: no mention of infertility, sexual dysfunction/absence of function, and so on, and so on.

It’s so predictable.
