I've said before (I namechanged recently) that it seems a bit like the Sunk Costs Fallacy in business. Once a person has spent time, money and in some cases their health and wellbeing going down a particular path, they are more likely to continue on that path even if they come to realise that it is no longer right for them.

It is why I feel that even social transitioning can fix children onto a path that takes them down a medical route. How difficult it must be to U turn from 'I'm definitely the opposite sex, I was born in the wrong body' to 'I now realise I just needed time to come to terms with the way puberty changed my body/the way I feel about myself and how I fit in the world'. Especially if everyone has told you how stunning and brave you and your family are for being/ allowing you to be your authentic self etc.

(I know that 'wrong body' is no longer used, but it was useful to make this point!)

HecatesCats · 22/11/2020 13:32

Acceptance without exception = acceptance with the exception of those who desist.

Whatwouldscullydo - yes it’s such a unhealthy pathway. Particularly when those who desist from transgenderism seem to be treated like those who leave Scientology. Either the whole thing needs to change to be more flexible to allow sensible approach and discussion or the stage of putting a foot on the path should have really strong gate keeping.

peanut2017 · 22/11/2020 13:13

That video clip is so disturbing. The parents seem like head-cases - what chance does that child have? Why would you want to film things like that? It's depressing

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/11/2020 13:05

No I know its not unique to transitioning, its human nature, like how people become institutionalised.

Which is why I feel setting them onto this path to begin with rather than trying to prevent it from happening is dangerous.

Ones identity should not be wrapped up in one thing this way, and is something that is usually advised against and other outlets and broadening interests etc is encouraged.

Hard to do that though when identity is the end goal, proof amongst all proof etc

Sorry not explaining myself very well...

I guess its a bit like picking a career... not only would you need a plan B, its all very well putting all your time and energy into achieving that, but it should never be at the expense of everything else , friends, family, hobbies etc amd In fact might actually count against you in the end..

StealthPolarBear · 22/11/2020 13:03

I came on to make exactly the same point avout fully functionl
From a heterosexual man's perspective
Although I'm so impressed they've managed to make it so a biological male can get pregnant
Fuck this absolute shit

NewlyGranny · 22/11/2020 12:58

The article states that the surgeon created 'a female anatomy that is fully functional'.

That definition, to me, would need to include a self-cleaning vagina, a functioning clitoris, sensitive labia, a uterus with cervix, ovaries and fallopian tubes.

I don't think functional means what the article writer thinks it means.

BaseDrops · 22/11/2020 12:57

@Whatwouldscullydo

Because once you start and your whole life becomes about something how do you stop?

You have to follow it through or admit you were wrong about the whole thing.

I have also seen several clips where attention has then shifted to helping fund raise and support others going through the same things, not sure it ever really "ends"

This is not unique to transitioning though. People affected by something, start raising awareness, campaigning, end up working within a relevant sector or volunteering and then their whole life is built around whatever the initial impetus was.

Ive wondered before about whether that trajectory is actually good for people or keeps them stuck in a psychological state that should not be the end stage of processing the initial event.

That video is horrifying. What are they doing? It feels like the surgeon is playing up to the cameras as much as the dysfunctional family are. Why are they putting their child through all of this?

[quote SebastianTheCrab]Oh Dr Ting! One of the two surgeons who operated on 17 year old Jazz Jennings - and argued in the operating room with the other surgeon about what they are cutting. Fucking cowboys.

The clip of them arguing is from Jazz's third surgery - they have since had a fourth surgery, because their genitalia has been so utterly fucked up.

Interesting that comments have been disabled for that video. Probably less 'brave and stunning' remarks and more 'What the fuck!'

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/11/2020 12:00

We do know of a couple. One a teenager who bought hormones on line.

Strangely it was all down to a lack of treatment/waiting times etc as opposed to testosterone being given to a patient who already suffers from depression...

And an adult who had the surgery but was unprepared for the fact that their neo vagina would forever smell like colon.

I think Sweden may have been able to publish statistics that show that the risk of suicide and self harm is actually greater post treatment..

tackiestones · 22/11/2020 11:57

All a journalist has to do is ask "what research are you basing that suicide claim on?" That's all. "Where is the evidence that this is true?"

If the prevalence of trans identity has been static through time (and across borders), that means that suicide would have been a leading cause of death in young people for centuries in many cultures.
Where are those stats coming from?

SophocIestheFox · 22/11/2020 11:49

this thread gets more and more concerning. bloody hell. those poor children.

Fucking hell, this is such a depressing read.

Does this person have parents?

DS used to go to school with a boy who would wear make up and his hair long, not much was made of it as far as I'm aware. When he was at college he worked in a bar and the person had now socially transitioned, was taking hormones, had superficial feminisation procedures and used a female name. DS got on well with his friend but as they got to know each other he was at first bemused and then icreasing horrified at how this person was being so exploited sexually. They were both teenagers going through the usual experimetation stage but this person's experiences were mainly transactional and mainly with older men acting out a fetish. It was a really odd situation.

I do worry that this is a danger for lots of people who transition at such a very young age.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 22/11/2020 11:34

That poor kid.

Whatwouldscullydo · 22/11/2020 11:08

Yes I remember the first thing they said to them was about achieving 5 inches or something...
.said everything we needed to know...

I'm still Shock at how they could barely walk but were released from hospital..was shocking

SebastianTheCrab · 22/11/2020 11:04

@Whatwouldscullydo

Oh god it was him?

I actually thought dr ting came across as a bit more , well he seemed more realistic and the sensible one , the one who was actually around afterwards fir any potential issues when the original surgeon was no where to be found.

I thought he was better than this.

Disappointed to say the least

Oh yes, the other surgeon, Marci Bowers, themselves a AGP trans woman is by far worse of the two. When Bowers saw Jazz after the 2nd or 3rd surgery Bowers said to Jazz, in front of Jazz's mother, who laughed "I've seen so many pictures of your vagina you could be a porn star"

A surgeon saying this to an underage patient.

What. The. Fuck.

I'm not sure who GenderHQ are as I haven't come across them before but they appear to be US based and pushing back against the narrative. This was posted on twitter in connection to the OP article.

www.genderhq.org/trans-youth-side-effects-hormone-blockers-surgery

Regarding using colon grafts to create the neo-vagina I had been wondering about some of the aspects of this surgery as I have dealings with people who have had colon surgery for medical reasons and it certainly isn't a straightforward complication free procedure you would choose for no good reason. Anyway I was interested to read this as I had been wondering about the very same thing:

"Colon grafts must be screened for colon cancer and should be monitored if the patient develops inflammatory bowel disease"

I suppose this type of surgery is relatively new and these long term consequences will not be apparent in a statistically meaningful way for some time.

I assume Emily must have had a colon graft or other inventive procedure as puberty blockers from a young age would have meant there wasn't sufficient penis to work with.

LongPauseNoAnswer · 22/11/2020 06:45

Here’s what I can’t understand. If these kids had Body Integrity Identity Disorder they would be given hefty counselling and mental health support, not fast tracked to amputation or paralysis. Why are professionals so afraid to challenge this?!

Sometimesonly · 22/11/2020 06:31

And how many people reading this will actually come away with the idea that it IS possible to create a fully functional female reproductive system? This is not journalism, it's propaganda.
