Health Education England - How to be a trans ally

HEE have released a document for transgender awareness week on how to be a trans ally. The majority of which is perfectly reasonable however the final point is about supporting a trans person’s choice of bathroom and includes If we are going to continue as a society to reinforce the use of male/female toilets (is that what we all do at home?) then trans people should be able to use the facility that corresponds with their gender identity.

The conflation between toilets at home and outside of the home really annoys me. How would you go about challenging this?

That is such a stupid argument. Your loo at home is not open to the public. You'd probably know anyone who uses it. Also only one person will be in there at a time, it's not like a public loo with cubicles or urinals.

I think its been established on here that the numer of attacks is n+1 - however many attacks there are, you always need another 1 before it's considered unacceptable by TRA

MissMarplesGlove · 19/11/2020 10:33

is that what we all do at home?

Well, I certainly don't allow random men with criminal intent to use the lavatories in my home.

We have sex-segregated lavatories, changing areas etc etc etc for a reason. Because women are vulnerable to sexual and/or physical attack in these places, generally by men.

So we need to be able to ask why any man is in our sex-segregated spaces. If we are told we have to accept any gender using sex-segregated spaces, we lose the right to question what men are doing in those spaces.

Or you could ask the trainers: how many attacks on women are acceptable in lavatories? 10? 100? or none?

You're not expected to share the bathroom at home with strangers for a start

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 19/11/2020 10:20

I'm not an ally. Not because I'm not supportive of other people. But because allyship appears to mean ignoring ones' own perception. I'm not up for that.

WeeBisom · 19/11/2020 10:20

My home is my private space. Strangers aren’t using my house toilet. This argument is nuts.

MichelleofzeResistance · 19/11/2020 10:04

No, I'm not an ally.

And this is not a meaning political statement of position, this is a statement of I have no idea what the fuck that word means, and I don't want anything to do with using jargon that suggests we're all at war and divided into factions.

gardenbird48 · 19/11/2020 10:04

is this document serious??

you can't assume anyone's gender, you must allow anyone into the toilets of their choice, you mustn't use the word 'preferred' in relation to their pronoun choice and you mustn't disclose anyone's transgender status without their consent (even in situations where sex is important????).

Ooff.... I've got to log off for a bit, this is too depressing.

MichelleofzeResistance · 19/11/2020 10:02

The silly language and the ridiculously stupid parallels just makes my teeth grate. What relevancy do they think this niche highly political jargon actually has to the massive majority of people not soaked in it? No, I'm not an ally. No I don't go into my bathroom at home with random males, because that would be weird. I don't use my bathroom at home at the same time as any close family member, male or female, because there's this thing called privacy, which can be denigrated as old fashioned and whatever else someone woke wants to intellectually wank about, but they can go and do whatever they want. And I will do the same. Because it's not appropriate to try and tear down other people's personal boundaries to your own benefit.

Kit19 · 19/11/2020 09:53

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH with the "its just like your toilet at home" 'argument'

my loo at home is not open to the general public to wonder in whenever they fucking feel like it.

Christ do these people all take idiot pills????

midgebabe · 19/11/2020 09:46

Check that there are san bins in all the gents , if not complain loudly. Then start to use the gents. If asked, you thought you were told it's gender not sex. Unless men are troubled this will continue.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 19/11/2020 09:43
