Health Education England - How to be a trans ally

HEE have released a document for transgender awareness week on how to be a trans ally. The majority of which is perfectly reasonable however the final point is about supporting a trans person’s choice of bathroom and includes If we are going to continue as a society to reinforce the use of male/female toilets (is that what we all do at home?) then trans people should be able to use the facility that corresponds with their gender identity.

The conflation between toilets at home and outside of the home really annoys me. How would you go about challenging this?

My loo at home is single sex because only women (inc workers, friends, tradespeople) are invited into my home, and I live alone.

Duckwit · 19/11/2020 17:33

How the fuck could an NHS organisation use the 'you let men use your toilet at home don't you?' argument?

What the actual fuuuuuuucccckkk?!

Deliriumoftheendless · 19/11/2020 17:28

I don’t let strangers use my bathroom.

I don’t let strangers sleep in my bed.

I don’t let strangers eat in my kitchen.

I don’t let strangers in to use my house phone.

I’m not changing that just because public toilets, hotel rooms, restaurants and phone boxes exist.

Motnight · 19/11/2020 17:28

Oh lordy. That statement is terrible.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 19/11/2020 17:19

F’idiots

fatblackcatspaw · 19/11/2020 17:16

wow....

Iamanaubergine · 19/11/2020 17:03

@Motnight No I don’t work for HEE although found my way to this policy after seeing a job advertised (which I was interested in). There was a section in the job ad that made me dig deeper into the organisation and made me reconsider applying.

The section was this (spot what’s missing): We strive to ensure that no individual receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of their gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, religion or belief, colour, race, ethnicity, national origin, age, pregnancy and maternity, marital or civil partnership status, transgender status, HIV status, social background, trade union membership or non-membership and is placed at a disadvantage by requirements or conditions that cannot be shown to be justifiable.

If they only cared as much about being a blind, deaf, autistic, aneorexia, cancer, ms, arthritis, bi polar, wheelchair user, epilepsy Parkinson’s ally I am sure a lot of lives of people with disability might be easier. Awareness of the challenges people face might help. It’s like there is only one trendy protected characteristic

Motnight · 19/11/2020 16:46

Op do you work for HEE? I do and am considering responding to the statement that they made.

LajesticVantrashell · 19/11/2020 13:43

I'm more concerned that the NHS are encouraging people to call out bigotry online. It smacks of encouragement to blindly follow the screaming loud narrative without applying any critical thinking.

Iamhangingin · 19/11/2020 13:14

We are very lucky to have 2 loos in my house and (as I'm sure is the same in many households) by unspoken agreement the boy in our household uses one and ladies the other. We all like having our own space!

AbsintheFriends · 19/11/2020 13:08

That's a good point about hotels eyesopening I never lock my bedroom door at home, so perhaps I shouldn't bother when I stay in a hotel. What could possibly go wrong?

I wonder if any social historians have ever researched how many women were sexual assaulted in shared public privies before indoor bathrooms were the norm? I bet it wasn't only the comfort of not having to trek outside in the cold that made many women glad of a private bathroom inside the house.

CaraDuneRedux · 19/11/2020 13:01

I don't share my toilet at home with complete strangers!

Totally fucking stupid argument

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 19/11/2020 12:47

Everyone knows the truth but you’re not allowed to say it any more

Well I'm going to continue saying it.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 19/11/2020 12:46

I have no wish to be an ally either. Read into that what you will.

TheGreatWave · 19/11/2020 12:41

Have they released it today on World Toileting Day?

I dislike the phase but bloody hell some people really do need to check their privilege, we have, like the minority of the world population, access to flushing toilets and instead of being grateful they are trying to make demands about which one they use. Be like millions of the world population and be poohing in a bush because that as sure as hell would wipe away the self entitlement going on.

gardenbird48 · 19/11/2020 12:05

right, I've had a nice walk in the sunshine and have now submitted my complaint.

I believe that everyone should be treated with respect but this document is so far off the mark that it is unacceptable.

ChakaDakotaRegina · 19/11/2020 11:18

It’s classic trivialising and misdirection.

I have had similar pop up on an email at work this week. Sadly I bet it’s written by someone who thinks it’s a great argument. I bet they’ve never thought further than loos.

Im going back with every example i can think of that highlights the other issues.

Either we have single sex spaces or we don’t.

NotBadConsidering · 19/11/2020 11:08

Ask them why they disagree with the United Nations.

@PenguindreamsofDraco

Why are we supposed to be allies? The number of trans people who are allies to women is...small.
That's a really good point Penguin. I'll use that if ever being accused of not being an "ally".
RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 19/11/2020 10:50

Ive got two loos

Im going to make one female only and the other can be mixed sex (as its in the bathroom)

Then whenever some wally thinks they have a gotcha with the ‘home toilet’ bollocks i can say that i do indeed have sex segregated toilets in my house

EyesOpening · 19/11/2020 10:47

That argument about the toilets at home gets right on my fucking tits. I leave the door open at home and my DH is free to come in - are they advocating I should leave the door open in public toilets and let any old bloke come in too? Similarly I let my DH sleep in the same bed as me (sometimes Grin) and we have sometimes have sex there, should I do the same for every other male when I stay in a hotel? Fuck off and fuck off some more with that stupid comparison!

UppityPuppity · 19/11/2020 10:46

HEE are a Stonewall champion - whose manifesto includes to remove single sex spaces:

www.stonewall.org.uk/women-and-equalities-select-committee-inquiry-transgender-equality

However HEE are supposed to uphold the Equality Act which specifically allows single sex exemptions/spaces - exemption based on sex - not transgender status - all males - excluded - all females (including transmen) - included

www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/notes/division/3/16/20/7

  • Specifically mentions changing rooms (and other things - routinely ignored)

Liz Truss recently stated "The position is clear in the Equality Act that service providers can restrict the use of spaces on the basis of biological sex, and it is important that women’s spaces, which have been hard fought for over generations, are protected."

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/unisex-changing-rooms-put-women-in-danger-8lwbp8kgk. Article about the dangers to women of mixed sex changing rooms - This is just about safety - not referencing privacy and dignity - which are also important routinely ignored.

HEE are suggesting reform/breach of the law - how is their remit?

Contact Page: www.hee.nhs.uk/about/contact-us

Please contact them and complain. Their web page states "NHS Constitution: The NHS Belongs to Us All".

Well HEE - 'all of us' includes women and girls if you hadn't noticed. How about being an ally to us?

Siameasy · 19/11/2020 10:42

Did a teenager write it? I truly despair. We should not need to be spelling all of this out. Everyone knows the truth but you’re not allowed to say it any more
