Do you think men should be allowed to wear skirts?

This was brought up by an article I read in the DailyMail (www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8847579/Straight-married-father-three-reveals-hes-worn-skirts-high-heels-day-four-years.html)

Some would say the fact that people think it's ridiculous for men to wear feminine clothing but the reverse isn't true is because the patriarchy sees women as being inferior to men. Therefore in a true gender egalitarian society, clothes would have no gender.

What about dating prospects? Would you date a man who wore skirts/high heels?

If a man does get verbally abused or even assaulted for wearing clothes that are seen as traditionally for women you can bet it’s not women doing it.

JaJaDingDong · 15/11/2020 09:35

Men don't really have the legs for shirts and dresses though tbh neither do I.

Athrawes · 15/11/2020 09:34

Men wear lavalava all the time here, in NZ, home of the manly man rugby player...
You want to tell a 6'6" islander that he can't wear a "skirt", be my guest!

What do you think about the topic you bought up ciarafoley97

I'm not a huge fan of people wearing their fetishes on the outside. People who want to show off genital or nipple piercings, people wearing leather/furry/gimp stuff outside, people wanting other people to spectate their sexual predilections without consent.

A nice kilt or djellaba or sarong, is great. Prince or Brian Molko playing with gender norms is fab.

Wanting me to be a participant in their sexual desires without consent, is not fab

Who knows how men think? I wish they'd think a little harder about flexing though and less about heels.

*Should flog them on ebay.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 15/11/2020 00:45

March? The last time I wore a stiletto was for a job interview in 2010 and I knew how far I needed to walk in them!

HecatesCats · 15/11/2020 00:38

Ner'er stiletto has crossed our threshold since March PastMy and I can't imagine it happening much post Covid. Turns out when you don't have to dress for other people you're less likely to go for options that cause excruciating pain.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 15/11/2020 00:35

Hecates any osteopath would surely agree. Half inch heels for all!

HecatesCats · 15/11/2020 00:17

@PastMyBestBeforeDate

They can trip around in stiletto shoes, crinolines or corsets for all I care. They're men wearing clothing that society determined was for women and is bloody ridiculous on any person.
I actually think it might help us all to reach a mutual acceptance that high heels are an effing nightmare

Guys wearing eyeliner has been a thing forever

MingeofDeath · 15/11/2020 00:15

I think men should wear skirts. Think of the freedom especially in summer with the breeze blowing around their bits. It would be much more comfortable and better for testicular health.

VulvaPerson · 15/11/2020 00:13

Also yeah it is rare, and some men might take the piss. However, women wearing trousers was rare at one stage, but they persisted and now its not even a 'thing' at all, just the usual. It might be a bit..painful short term, but in the long run it would benefit them.

@BlackForestCake

That said, if men are to wear skirts they'd better clamp those legs together

A hazard at Scottish weddings is large numbers of men in kilts who have not had the female socialisation of learning to sit with their knees together

Eh? Kilt material is so heavy if you sit with legs apart the material will dip down between knees to cover anything. I have never noticed a Sharon Stone type incident at any kilted event I've been at.
VulvaPerson · 15/11/2020 00:11

They should be able to wear whatever the fuck they want tbh. Same with women.

It does seem quite taboo for a guy to wear feminine clothes, but hopefully with this explosion in 'non binary' and such, this will help a little. What would help much more though, would be for the many 'non binary' people to wear what they want, without claiming it was because they were 'non binary'..normalising it in general instead of making out you must be somethig other than a man if you like to wear dresses or whatever.

This wouldn't even enter my radar, for dating. Infact before I was married, many of the male partners I had were very much on the feminine side. I have a huge thing for guys in eyeliner/makeup, and always have, so maybe I actively looked for guys like that! Not sure.

HecatesCats · 15/11/2020 00:11

women's undergarment's seem more of the commonly worn items of clothing among men

A certain subset of men, perhaps. Shouldn't stop the rest of them wearing skirts. Maybe if they weren't so worried about being beaten up by each other they'd have done it ages ago.

Hawkins001 · 15/11/2020 00:10

On a slightly different item of clothing, women's undergarment's seem more of the commonly worn items of clothing among men, although I don't have any articles to confirm this, from my studies a while ago.

HecatesCats · 15/11/2020 00:09

Yes! Women wear trousers men should feel free to wear skirts. We should all wear what we bloody like and stop fast tracking kids on a path to puberty blockers and disfiguring surgery because everyone's so uptight about clothes and make up.

Lougle · 15/11/2020 00:06

I saw an older gentleman, in our sleepy little village, wearing a very short skirt, chunky heels, tights and a fair isle knitted jumper. The jumper looked odd, tbh, but the skirt looked ok and he had good legs for it.

TyroTerf · 15/11/2020 00:00

Of course men should be allowed to wear skirts.

Most of them just don't want to, though, because skirts are coded feminine/non-masculine and a lot of men are a bit funny about things that might make other people question their manliness. They're quite heavily invested in skirts as a signifier of not-a-proper-man.

I'd not date a man in a skirt because he's a man. Not interested in dating one in trousers either, for the same reason. I do find skirts on women offputting, attraction-wise; it's specifically the feminine coding that I find unappealing. But everyone ought to be able to wear whichever according to their own preference.

BlackForestCake · 14/11/2020 23:57

Loads of men all over the world wear flowing robes, kilts, gowns, if you just look beyond the western paradigm of suits and ties.
