Julia: "I'm not a CIS woman, I'm a woman. I'm not going to have that BBC claptrap on my show. If you say that I'm going to ask you to leave my studio."

If only we could all speak up like this!

Well done Julia

@MumbleBee20

I got a massive backlash yesterday online for refusing to refer to myself as a 'female born outside genital haver' I'm pretty open minded and accepting but I will never, ever refer to myself as anything other than a woman. It was my first real experience with anything related to trans issues and it left me stunned.
There's a desperate need to dehumanise women through language like that.
BlueCatRedCat · 31/10/2020 20:19

@DreadingSeason2020sFinale

I also noticed that he just wouldn't leave it. He wouldn't take a woman's word on what women should call themselves. How fucking dare he?! How dare he, like TRAs do, tell US what we may no longer define ourselves as the legal, biological term for adult human females. That we are no longer women (though Transwomen can use that term for their own) but a newly defined subset of "woman".

Want to start telling black people what they can call themselves too?

Mysoginistic dick.

Plenty of white SJWs are quite happy to tell non complaint black people what they must call themselves. I recall John Barnes being told by a white radio presenter that he was "aggressive" and wrong to have no problem with describing himself as "coloured"
GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 31/10/2020 19:34

I do love the word ' clap-trap'.
Especially when so brilliantly deployed.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 31/10/2020 18:25

I'v been spending time on trans forums, trying to educate myself.

There are many long, earnest posts about the finer points of self definition.

I haven't figured out what NB trans people believe themselves to be, which I don't understand because trans, by definition, is binary, so, how can you be a NB trans? Oh, and "Enby" is infantilising language now.

No one questions cis or considers what all their musings and requests mean for women.

It's very dull reading. I haven't been educated on anything other than pseudo grammar.

Dwrcegin · 31/10/2020 18:01

I actually watched this today (on my youtube recommends). Well done to her though, he just wasn't going to let it go was he?
Why the hell should Women be called 'cis' women?

I only heard the term recently and I find it ridiculous.

Bmidreams · 31/10/2020 16:46

@IrishMumSW19

Amazing. Most of us who are sensible agree. Sadly I’d probably be fired if I made such a statement publicly.

Frightening, isn't it?

I fell out big time with a trans man that I'd known pre-trans, because although I accepted his prefered pronouns and used them for him (and still do) he wouldn't accept that I was a woman NOT a cis-woman and didn't want to be called or referred to as a cis woman when nothing had changed as far as I was concerned since we only had 'women'

You can't have one rule for one and not the other, it's rude of him not to accept how I wish to be referred. Just as it would be rude if I called him 'her' .

Datun · 31/10/2020 12:31

@Winesalot

To be honest, I had not come across the term until last year. I don’t know how. I was so in a bit of bubble and I did not know it.

And where did I learn about it, here on these boards. And I am forever thankful that I could then explain to my own daughter why she is not to accept being relegated to being a subset of women through use of that term.

It's not just being regulated to a subset of your own sex, either. And it's not just disagreeing that you are aligned with the hierarchical and damaging stereotypes associated with your sex.

It's the unbelievable arrogance of being defined, always and completely, in reference to what a man does.

He said it himself. Well you're a non transwoman then. That's what cis is.

A transwoman is a man who identifies as a woman. Therefore a cis woman is not a man who identifies as a woman.

No thanks. I'm not being described, as 'not a man...'.

Cailleach1 · 31/10/2020 12:07

Oops. I get all these "Cis" (sic) men aka "nontransmen" mixed up, don't I? I have asked Mumsnet to delete the post.

BrassicaRabbit · 31/10/2020 11:47

I think, as alluded to by PP, one key factor is that it's Julia's show; her studio. She has the necessary power to be able to stand up for herself. How often are women in that position? I'm not - self employed in a "woke" industry. Many, many of my female friends are in the same precarious boat.

I learned about it in 2013 when a student used the term. I had to Google it. It led to a night long alcohol binge fuelled with pure rage.

@YetAnotherSpartacus

I think the first time around most of us apart from the savvy women on MN had no clue how rampant, and how insulting, this was, what the implications were, so we didn't really care. It was all really? Oh, Ok. I'm cis, then

I've never been 'cis' OP :). I've never accepted the word. I just missed the wonderful takedown of the misogynistic interviewee! I loved it!

Oh, I did understand that. It's just that two years ago I wouldn't have taken it the whole "cis" thing as seriously as I do now. I too was never cis, but I saw women left right and centre, especially on that forum I mentioned, who embraced the term without a second thought.

Few of us got the wider implications, and so this video didn't go viral, and so we "missed" it. Now it will go viral, I expect. Because now we are all clued in.

THANK YOU!!!

Martina, please clarify. Are u against the term Cis or do u not think that trans women are legitimate women. This post shows u wanted to say something... I'm just confused

These people. Unbelievable.

Martina Navratilova retweeted it today?

Ah, that explains why I am suddenly getting twitter likes of my two years old comment.

It was brilliant (her, not my comment) and needs to be recirculated regularly!

Winesalot · 31/10/2020 10:39

*these language

Winesalot · 31/10/2020 10:38

It has been heartening that Julia has not backed down on this. And yes, thear language changes have gone too far.
