OP posts:

The restrictions are ridiculous we don't have any real independent shops around here the supermarkets priced them out years ago they fucking closed

SengaMac · 26/10/2020 11:50

I think this was a very misguided idea from the Welsh Government.

mumwon · 26/10/2020 11:50

does anybody remember that link about controlling periods (mentioned by pp?) perhaps this idiot (manager) thinks the same way
Point to Welsh Government - NOT EVERYBODY HAS ACCESS TO INTERNET OR BANK CARDS THEY CAN SAFELY USE
apologies about capitals but emphasis in this situation are needed

shieldedsally · 26/10/2020 11:49

This story is bullshit. One person clearly got confused in a local Tesco branch. Both Tesco and the Welsh gvmt have said they got it wrong. I don't know why people keep reacting as if misinformation were true.

Graciebobcat · 26/10/2020 11:49

Also is Jeff Bezos advising the Welsh government by any chance? If you can't get certain items in shops then more profits for Amazon, unless they are banning deliveries as well.

SengaMac · 26/10/2020 11:48

makes it look like they are run by a bunch of people that are still mystified by velcro

There are a lot of very stupid people employed in Tesco - especially in all levels of management.

Graciebobcat · 26/10/2020 11:47

Welsh government and/or Tesco need to have a word with themselves. Blocking off aisles just herds more people together in the other aisles, quite apart from anything else. Stupid.

CheetasOnFajitas · 26/10/2020 11:43

I’d have loved to have been a fly on the wall in that conversation between Raza and Gary.

CheetasOnFajitas · 26/10/2020 11:43

Raza-you’re fired.

ProfessorSlocombe · 26/10/2020 11:39

@OrtamLeevz

If I needed something that was an essential purchase and the aisle has a barrier, then I'd shove the bloody barrier out of the way.
So would I.

Which is why preventing things being scanned seems a safer measure. Especially if Tesco were caught selling an "unapproved" item could lead to a big fine.

Whatwouldscullydo · 26/10/2020 11:38

If you were a 12 Yr old girl though who went to go grab some while her mum looked after a toddler outside or was in a different aisle they may not have had the confidence to do that.

CorianderLord · 26/10/2020 11:38

Is it bc they're taxed as a luxury? So maybe they gov has said all 'luxury tax items' should be unsaleable? The fact they are luxury taxed is another matter

fromdownwest · 26/10/2020 11:38

@Whatwouldscullydo - You have never had to deal with the WAG, confusion at every turn! Smile

They truly are a mess, just look at the state of the NHS in Wales since deveolution. Not wanting to derail the OP point.

The WAG sent a list of items that THEY deemed to be non essential to the super markets, the super markets then proceeded to block off access to these items, through fear of significant fines.

Of these non essential items, many people would class them as essential (baby clothes, duvets, baby bottle sterlising machines, cards, books etc

When a government, can dictate what people can and cannot buy, I think it should be challenged at the highest level. Sadly, Borris sat back and watched it unfold, smugly smiling.

greenwine · 26/10/2020 11:37

Mark Drakeford has also said that books are not essential products. Apparently the idea behind all this nonsense is that smaller independent stores that are still open will get the business. The reasoning is that if non essential products are banned in supermarkets, the shopper will then visit an independent store to buy the goods.
Those complete idiots in the Welsh Government are a bunch of incompetent fools.
This will lead to a rise in online sales. Mark Dickford is less than useless and as a pp said, I hope all this is remembered when the Welsh election takes place next year. Knowing Dickford, he'll postpone the election, because Covid.

Danglingmod · 26/10/2020 11:36

Clearly a ban on stationery is utterly ludicrous, too. Not just for home workers but for all those home schooling next week!

OrtamLeevz · 26/10/2020 11:36

nosswith · 26/10/2020 11:34

I'm beginning to wonder if it is either a misogynistic shop manager (never been to a Tesco managed by a woman myself), or someone having a go at the Welsh government. I am not sure which is worse- even though the Tories are nasty enough to be happy to see children go hungry, I cannot see them spreading a false story for this.

ProfessorSlocombe · 26/10/2020 11:33

Surely - with the number of IT experts sitting on their arses at home - an outfit the size of Tescos could have conducted an operation to simply ensure non-approved items can't be scanned into a basket ? Rather than this rather Keystone Cops approach which makes it look like they are run by a bunch of people that are still mystified by velcro ?

The deepest lesson from Covid appears to be how staggeringly incompetent the people we've been told for years are "worth every penny" of their telephone number salaries. But only if you're dialling the speaking clock, it seems.

Aesopfable · 26/10/2020 11:31

Where incontinence products deemed non-essential too? They are normally next to sanitary products.

Whatwouldscullydo · 26/10/2020 11:28

What about the "people who bleed" products too?!

Well when you make woman such a dirty word no wonder mysoginists and their handmaiden will take full advantage of the contempt

Whatwouldscullydo · 26/10/2020 11:27

This isn't the case at all, this is down to the supermarket badly misinterpreting the rule. There are Welsh Government discussions today to resolve this and other issues that have been highlighted, mainly by supermarkets who have just not understood the request

The other supermarkets don't seem to have had a problem interpreting it.

I can see how some products might need further discussion ( personally I think if a shop is open and you are allowed in then you should be able to buy what they sell) but this is pretty basic.

And on a reasonably clear list.

I dont think that tesco should get off that easily citing "confusion "

MrsPeacockInTheLibrary · 26/10/2020 11:26

TableFlowerss · 26/10/2020 11:24

This has to be a wind up??????

Fucking madness if that’s true. This has to be one of the most fucked up rules I’ve EVER heard!!

Sort it out Tesco!!

Welcome to a glimpse at independence.
