@EstuaryBird

Just talking to a friend who’s son is a transman about this and asked if he would be offended (he’s in his 30s and been a man for around 10 years).

He takes hormones and hasn’t had a period for a very long time. Apparently most transmen do this, although not all, so they’re alienating a huge number of women for ‘including’ a tiny number of transmen....who are probably pretty realistic about it and not bothered anyway.

I would have thought that if you were a transman you would take suppressants for periods due to what they symbolise.

Sent too soon! Should have included the anal and masturbation! Grin

Just sent this:

I wish to complain about the link in your twitter post. The hashtag transisbeautiful link contains inappropriate pictures of men posing in sexy underwear. One has his penis hanging out!

@Awning10

Just went back to look and noticed that they have a hashtag transisbeautiful link at the top. Click on the link if you dare! Sixth post down is someone in sexy underwear with their dick hanging out!
Don’t scroll any further down than that!!! 😳😳😳.

Think Tampax need to know that that hashtag contains a graphic video of masturbation and anal sex.......

In the context of tampons, wouldn't a more relevant hashtag be #transishandsome ? (Does that exist? If not, why not?)
Awning10 · 24/10/2020 13:17

I'm going to complain about the link that includes dick pics.

I added that I am a Tampax customer but would find another brand if they didn't reconsider this nonsense.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 24/10/2020 13:13

Thinking about it, I'd expect non-scented brands to be better, because of not getting any more potentially contaminating chemicals into a wound.

FeedTheSparrows · 24/10/2020 13:12

Sent my complaint about this BS via their website email form Why restrict the hassle they are getting to Twitter?!

Should others wish to do same: tampax.co.uk/en-gb/contact-us

I went along these lines - feel free to edit and recycle this if you want to send your own complaint:

Biological sex is a fact of life. I understand there are those who are troubled by it, but there are other ways of supporting them without erasing women or declaring 'women' to be a controversial word.

I urge you to find a different way to reach people who do not believe they are women but who have periods. Please do not join this sexist trend of trying to make woman, women and girls into dirty words.

We've barely managed to get over the taboo of mentioning periods and menstruation - we do NOT need this backwards step whereby woman becomes the word no one dares to say.

KurriKawari · 24/10/2020 13:11

What alternatives to tampax would people recommend please? I have found their quality is going downhill anyway. Have a Hey Girls mooncup but prefer tampons.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 24/10/2020 13:07

Thanks, jellyfrizz. Good to know -- especially good to know it's unlikely to be Tampax so we don't need to try to explain to them why they ought to use some other brand.

Ah thank you gibongibongibin I can now see the reply numbers so makes sense now!

@TartanLassie

I don't use twitter so am a wee bit confused on ratio.

I googled and read The Ratio refers to an unofficial Twitterr* law which states that if the amount of replies to a tweet greatly outnumbers the amount of retweets and likes, then the tweet is bad.

However this tweet has 2k likes and only 1.2k quote tweets, so surely that mean the ratio is a positive. Sorry for being thick :)

"Quote retweet is often, but not always, used to make negative comments, straight retweet without comment is usually endorsement.
The removal of retweet without quote makes retweets a poor measure ratio. Replies to likes is the usual measure.

It’s the replies v.s the likes that makes the “ratio” on the assumption that if you disagree you reply. (If you can’t see the number of replies you need to click on a reply then scroll up to the original tweet)

On the tampons for battlefield med kits - it’s true.

I always thought it was to do with amount of likes compared to comments, so this tweet it has 2.1k likes but 3.5k comments.

I'm confused now too Grin

doadeer · 24/10/2020 12:53

I work in marketing and absolutely everything is measured and analysed. I'm so curious whether these brands see any meaningful dip in sales or performance metrics. Obviously their social media engagement increases - though it's predominately negative sentiment and I would think this would also increase website visits. But does it directly impact sales?

jellyfrizz · 24/10/2020 12:53

I wonder whether the SAS carry a few Tampax at all times just in case...

My OH, who in an earlier life was a combat medic says yes, they do. (Although probably not Tampax as they expand more longways than out ways and have the stupid applicator which would just take up room in the med kit.)

MichelleofzeResistance · 24/10/2020 12:51

I’m confused about all the hate.

I know, right? Why on earth would female people hate being spoken about and to so offensively, and erased and excluded from their own class for the benefit of those born and who identify as male?

It's baffling I tell you. Women, eh? Who knows what goes on in those fluffy little heads.

SusannaSpider · 24/10/2020 12:46

For me 'women and transmen' would work. It emphasises that tampons are not for men, as it stands it could include men with a fetish.
I do wonder why woke people aren't campaigning for sanitary bins etc to be in mens toilets. Presumably because transmen are basically women and not importantHmm.

bellinisurge · 24/10/2020 12:45

What's wrong with it is erasing women.
Another day. Another "For fuck's sake"

@SarahG6383

I’m confused about all the hate. Surely they are trying to include transgender men. Transgender men still bleed every month and I’m guessing here, don’t like being labelled as a woman? so I get it. So it’s including them too?
I, and many other women in the real world, don't like being labelled as a bleeder, so why doesn't that matter?

Do women really have to be excluded to include transmen? My invite for cervical screening from the NHS says they invite women and individuals with a cervix. What's wrong with that?

When you look deeper, you realise this is nothing to do with transmen though. They're ignored just the same as women and only wheeled out when they can be conveniently used as a gotcha. This is to do with some men and their entitlement. If they can't have the name woman, we can't either. Make no mistake about who this is really for.

This kind of mangling of language, the fear of using the word women, led to the charity for women and girls ActionAid releasing a statement claiming there's no such thing as a biological female. If you're familiar with their work, you'll know they help women and girls who are stripped of their human rights and dignity and killed because of their biology. That's why this is a problem and where it stops being mildly amusing. This is what this nonsense leads to. It's insulting.

Are we really expected to believe that a young girl literally freezing to death outside in a hut she's been banished to for the crime of having a period, a natural biological function that is the result of being female, is crying herself to sleep because ActionAid used the words 'women and girls' in their campaign?
