Great article about the Mridul Wadhwa.

It seems to me (as a non-member observing the twitter discussion from members) as though the SNP members are fed up with entryist, self-promoting wokists with no interest in Independence, and making that known. The Woke NEC is furiously scrambling to keep changing the rules to keep their grip on who gets selected. Lots of the formerly-woke are sensing the change, and so are pretending to take an "I'm listening to both sides on GRA reform" stance, because they know that GRA is not popular. The idea is to not commit or make a big deal of GRA until they are safely in position and then can impose it next year.

PearPickingPorky · 21/10/2020 09:42

Apparently Spear was going for the Glasgow Cathcart seat which the NEC (which Spear sits on) had decided to change into a woman-only seat. But then James Dornan, the (sensible, rational, well-liked) incumbent, challenge that decision and it was overturned. Knowing she had no hope in a fair run against Dornan, she decided she would go for A&B, where she was born (but apparently spends, and intends to spend, no time there).

Think that's an accurate summary.

Igneococcus · 21/10/2020 08:57

In the OT article it says that she is originally from Bute.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/10/2020 08:53

I think she lived there as a child?

ArabellaScott · 21/10/2020 08:49

Has Spear any connection to A&B? I find it a touch odd that someone living in Glasgow would stand for a remote rural seat.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/10/2020 08:17

That's surprising given what I have seen in twitter about the hustings being micromanaged by the NEC. Must have been dire if she came across badly despite the NEC protection.

PearPickingPorky · 21/10/2020 08:13

It sounds like the Hustings in Argyll and Bute didn't go to plan for Rhianon Spear.

ArabellaScott · 20/10/2020 16:42

Interesting article.

I wonder if female agreeableness is often a survival tactic - closely allied to submissiveness.

NecessaryScene1 · 20/10/2020 16:24

I've seen quite a lot of analysis recently (of Woke more generally) which has come to a similar conclusion.

If you're someone who finds it important to be liked, you are going to be much more susceptible to going along with nonsense if it becomes fashionable. Someone clearly bolshie and bloody-minded, used to being disliked by some, like that character Stuart Campbell, is not going to give it the time of day.

His level of commitment is impressive though - the nonsense clearly offends him at a visceral level. Or I guess it's maybe his anti-authoritarian instincts kicking in - he has more scorn for the people using the nonsense as a means to power than for the nonsense itself.

Two of my other favourite old-time (remember Iraq?) bolshies are Andrew Sullivan and Glenn Greenwald. Been interested to see where they were. Sullivan is happily 110% GC, loudly.

Greenwald is taking his time, but he seems to be getting there - he was taken aback by the attacks on his hero Navratilova, and wrote a long article about that, and he had a sane video discussion about the ridiculous Spotify employees-versus-Joe Rogan & Abigail Shrier thing. If he doesn't ultimately go full GC, it'll be a sign he's gone soft.

PS here's one of my favourite pieces on the theme by Louise Perry:

Are Contemporary Feminists Too Agreeable?

ArabellaScott · 20/10/2020 15:56

I found Wings' commentary on Scottish independence fascinating. As I said, it was sometimes shocking, but whenever I checked the references, it seemed to be accurate.

Quite pleased - and somewhat surprised - to see him support gc principles.

GRA reform/gende seems to be one of those subjects where only the more thrawn, awkward and prickly, not to mention perceptive, questioning and intelligent, of observers were quickest to see the impending problems. Many people seem able to live with amazing amounts of cognitive dissonance (I include myself in that number, fwiw, it took me a wee while to really fathom what was going on.)

It takes a good deal of strength of mind to question and go against the prevailing tide of opinion. I really admire those who have that ability. I imagine it's far from easy.

NecessaryScene1 · 20/10/2020 15:24

He was great on Twitter, and he continues to be great on his blog. His readers are there for the Scottish independence, but they're getting a good hard helping of Gender Critical on the side:

Fuck me - jib!
He can be a bit mental, and he’s no supporter of JKR, he’s been horrible to her in the past about wanting to stay in the union, but this article is clear, and I also saw this one where he defends her against the hate crime bill. wingsoverscotland.com/jail-time-for-joanne/

Should've said - I now know about that site.

Please don't get it deleted.

I now about that site you linked to. Thank you.

PopperUppleton · 20/10/2020 08:58

But who appointed this person? It's not only their fault. They shouldn't have applied, granted, but who appointed them?

I don't see why. All the info is public and it is a shocker of a case!

I find it hard to see how M got appointed to the job as they look frankly like a man in a sari to me.

DidoLamenting · 19/10/2020 12:43

@Babdoc

Ho ho, trouble in paradise, eh? Fabulous to see the SNP tearing itself apart. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch... Grin Let’s hope their civil war distracts them from trying to tear our country apart, while simultaneously destroying education, the economy and the health service and inflicting nonsensical laws like named person and the hate crime bill.
This with bells on.
Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 19/10/2020 12:36

I'm puzzling over Mridul's GRC status. MW has claimed on several occasions that they can't get one due to being born in India. Yet, as I understand it, a GRC could still be issued here.

Also, I believe it is possible to apply for a certificate in India but you have to provide proof of surgery. Does this mean MW hasn't had SRS? If so, it's even more disturbing they are in a rape crisis centre.

Does anyone have any further knowledge on Indian position?

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 19/10/2020 12:25

@TheQuietWoman

I think one of the comments suggested it was also a female name. He is absolutely ghastly. Taking a position meant for a woman at a rape crisis centre ffs. No decency at all.
Thank you,

It does rather raise the issue of who is going to make a judgement about which names qualify and how non-European names will be assessed.

And yes, I cannot believe that entitlement. Lying to get a job working with vulnerable women!

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 19/10/2020 12:18

I wonder if Mridul never changed their name? The article points out that it's a male name in India. In light of the legal challenge the FWS are bringing on the Public Boards act, Mridul would fail one of the definitions of woman: "using a female name on official documents such as a driving licence or passport, or on utility bills or bank accounts"!

fatblackcatspaw · 19/10/2020 12:02

It was also very interesting seeing the untouched up photos of M too
