Man making skirts non-gender

Sorry, stupid title.

But what do you think of this link? Man likes to wear skirts and heels to work, still definitely a man, not a transwoman, not a sexual fetish, he just thinks skirts should be non gender, likes the style etc.

I just find this really refreshing, how things should be really, Men should be able to chose more traditionally feminine clothes, whilst still being a men.

My colleagues would stage an intervention if I turned up to work in what he calls his favourite skirts and shoes.

Your colleagues would police what you wear? And you would judge a woman who wears clothes like that?
I would wear the heels, though my feet only accept high wedges these days. I would also wear some of those skirts. He's a robotics engineer, sounds fairly professional, I'm a designer. A friend who is a lawyer does dress like that, and pencil skirts are fairly the norm, high stiletto court type shoes are too. Less of the strappy though, as it's bloody freezing here.

@Whatwouldscullydo

So feminists have said this for years bit man does it and it is news article worthy ?

Are we supposed to say "good on him" whilst pretending it was all his idea?

I mean yeah he absolutely should wear what he likes as should everyone but this is incredibly frustrating that no one listens til men do it.

That's a rather sour faced comment. He is dressing in a way which is utterly different from what men in western society wear.(notwithstanding the rose tinted comments about the 60s and 70s)

He is doing exactly what "gender critical feminists" say he should do- yet you still find something to complain about.

JenniferSantoro · 16/10/2020 13:47

The world has gone mad.

DidoLamenting · 16/10/2020 13:45

For a start, he is wrong about professional dress for women. Professional women do not wear very tight pencil skirts and 4 inch strappy heels to work. You won't see that from lawyers, doctors and engineers who are female. My colleagues would stage an intervention if I turned up to work in what he calls his favourite skirts and shoes

What very unpleasant colleagues you have then. Three of my best assistants wear pencil skirts and very high heels - others don't. I don’t. Lawyers aren't a homogeneous bunch.

SusannaSpider · 16/10/2020 13:44

Let men be masculine and women be feminine. Wish everyone would stop pretending like there isn't and shouldn't be differences between us.

But there are differences, that's the point. He is still very much a man, he's not claiming to be transgender or a woman. It's just window dressing, why is there a need for certain styles of clothing to be masculine?
I have to confess, I find how he looks quite attractive. Though I guess that is a little bit down to the fact that he is in good shape and that goes beyond window dressing.

And to the pps who are cynical, yeah, I totally get why you think like that. And I don't want to use the NAMALT excuse, it would just be nice if you were wrong and I hope there isn't a conversion in years to come, especially as he has a wife.

He looks great! Wish I looked anywhere near that good in a skirt and heels.

Loved the tux-ballgown that Billy Porter wore to the Oscars last year too.

nibdedibble · 16/10/2020 13:37

Reminds me of something Grayson Perry said about transvestites turning up to events in trousers “ooh, you’re HARDCORE”

Agree this is not how many women actually dress

BrassicaRabbit · 16/10/2020 13:37

I was surprised at how much those skirts really suit him.

I want to say good for him but I'm so jaded by the way trans activism has revealed so many men to harbour deeply misogynist attitudes that I too expect to see him demanding access to women's spaces in a few years. I really, really hope I'm wrong though.

Several of my boy mates were wearing skirts (sarong style) in the early 00s.

JuliaJohnston · 16/10/2020 13:36

He's not "making them" anything. He's just one single attention seeking man wearing a skirt.

PostItJoyWeek · 16/10/2020 13:35

I am all in favour of men being free to wear skirts and heels in the western countries where it not currently the norm.

That man is clearly doing a sex thing in some way.

For a start, he is wrong about professional dress for women. Professional women do not wear very tight pencil skirts and 4 inch strappy heels to work. You won't see that from lawyers, doctors and engineers who are female. My colleagues would stage an intervention if I turned up to work in what he calls his favourite skirts and shoes. I would be astonished if the female engineers at his work dress like that.

Looks like sex fantasy of boss ladies to me.

Nevertheless, if he wants to dress like an eighties sexy manageress on tv then good luck to him, why not.

TicTac80 · 16/10/2020 13:35

I'm just impressed that he's able to walk in heels that high!! I certainly can't. Good luck to him. It's nice seeing people with the confidence to wear what they want :)

SunsetBeetch · 16/10/2020 13:33

Fine by me.

Aprild25 · 16/10/2020 13:31

Ugh he is just trying to be outrageous...or is into dressing up as a woman. Let's stop pretending it is normal for men to dress like this. I know I would be pretty unimpressed if my husband decided he wanted to start wearing heels and a skirt...unless is was a joke. Let men be masculine and women be feminine. Wish everyone would stop pretending like there isn't and shouldn't be differences between us.

Aware this isn't a popular opinion due to the current gender neutral obsession but I'm not into it

DidoLamenting · 16/10/2020 13:31

@sunshinesupermum

FFS Every time I see 'non-gender' clothing I want to SHOUT ' we've had UNISEX clothing since the 1960s' Dress how you want.
Oh come off it. We did not have men routinely dressing like this in the 60s- Mick Jagger wearing a dress at a concert in Hyde Park and does not equate to anything like this.

We did not have unisex clothing then or now. "Unisex clothing" is women wearing trousers.

I think he's very brave. I don't think for one minute the mantra of "wear whatever you like" is generally accepted without question in real life. It's not even universally accepted on here - despite claims to the contrary.

Poppyismyfavourite · 16/10/2020 13:26

I think fair play to him! A man wearing a skirt is just that, a man wearing a skirt!
Although I also raised an eyebrow at heels being empowering and shirts being masculine but skirts neutral... things are still allowed to be feminine.
I used to see a guy around where I worked wearing skirts. Kind of like a black kilt, knee length and pleated. He had a bit of a metalhead kind of style.

SusannaSpider · 16/10/2020 13:21

"still definitely a man, not a transwoman" transvestite surely."

And this is why people stay in their gender defined boxes, when it comes to clothing.
I used to get called a trannie when younger. Dickhead blokes who I'd knocked back would think it a good insult because I'm a tall woman, (usually taller than them if I'm in heels).

2bazookas · 16/10/2020 13:21

It's just a matter of time until men invent MENstruation. They'll all be wanting a sanibelt , a bunny and spray-on blood. Leaked on the back of their pencil skirts.

titchy · 16/10/2020 13:20

@Sexnotgender

Fair play to him. I’d much rather this than the wearing a dress makes me a woman crew.
Showing my cynicism here but give him 10 years he'll be all about 'the skirts and stilettos were reflecting the authentic woman that I am...'

Sorry but I find it very hard to believe he's not getting his rocks off wearing that lot.

AbsintheFriends · 16/10/2020 13:20

I'm struggling to get my head around him wearing shoes like that for a full day's work - with heels that high and toes that pointed - and describing it as 'empowering'.

Many women would say that it is the very opposite. That there is nothing more distracting, energy-and-confidence sapping, debilitating and disempowering than wearing shoes that pinch your toes, make your joints ache and give you a bad back, which prevent you from being able to walk quickly and safely and run up and downstairs, and which are designed to contort feet into an unnatural 'sexy' arch rather than provide comfort and support so you can get on with your day without thinking about what you're wearing.

So, yes... 'empowering' is an interesting adjective. As a professional white male, I wonder why he feels 'empowered' by dressing in such a stereotypically sexy, feminine way?

KrakowDawn · 16/10/2020 13:20

What @babdoc said.

I'd have thought skirts were actually easier for everyone, for ease of loo use tbh.

Sexnotgender · 16/10/2020 13:16

@oldwhyno

"still definitely a man, not a transwoman" transvestite surely.

"not a sexual fetish" - not buying it.

I do feel similar to your second comment.

katmarie · 16/10/2020 13:14

I think he looks great, mostly because he looks happy in himself. he's obviously comfortable in what he wears, and that's the main thing. I think we should all be able to wear whatever makes us comfortable, I like mens boots and jumpers for example. Although if I had his collection of high heels I wouldn't be upset!

nibdedibble · 16/10/2020 13:13

@bluebluezoo

I was an 80's teen, it seemed to be far more common then

Me too. I still have a hankering for real men with eyeliner, pirate blouses and long hair blowing in the wind...

Back when men were men Grin

Yes! I always use the 80s as my reason why being a woman isn’t about how you present, when talking to my dc about trans stuff. The clothes and makeup are the least interesting bit. (It’s the millennia of second-class citizen status, the threat of assault at any time and the consistent opposition to equal pay! Boom boom!)
Doyoumind · 16/10/2020 13:10

I don't care what people wear and if he wants to wear skirts and heels as a man he can knock himself out but those kinds of shoes are honestly painful and impractical.
