In a Q&A he said he'll reverse all 'anti trans' executive orders if he becomes president. He revealed again that he doesn't really know anything about the trans debate but implied he will still give campaigners everything they want twitter.com/DailyCaller/status/1316913590620852224?s=20

I sleep well. I will never align myself with those who want to dismantle the defining features of liberal Western democracy. Those are the Enlightenment values which are currently under relentless attack by people who don't believe in freedom of speech, rational debate. Or even external reality. I will never vote for any party colonised by the Robespierre faction.

HelloToMyKitty · 16/10/2020 19:19

our CIA warns him repeatedly about threats from foreign countries and he IGNORES them

He should ignore the CIA, they should be disbanded and scattered to the four winds as Kennedy put it. I’d get my ass into gear and vote for (almost) anyone who promised this!

Since when did progressives trust the CIA?!

Women in America have already lost rights over their own reproductive decisions. It's only going to get worse. Doctors in some states can now go to jail for having an abortion

Citation please. Roe vs Wade is still the law of the land, you can’t put doctors into jail for performing legal abortions.

More Bovary word soup.

There is a choice
Make it
and sleep well with your choice
because it will affect your daughters and grand daughters

Everything is nuance
each policy has to be balanced out against the rest

Your simplistic, partisan attempt to reduce the choice facing US voters to good versus evil is unpersuasive. You don't seem able to grasp that people have different political viewpoints on a range of issues; the economy, taxation, freedom of speech, law and order, the importance of upholding the constitution. You don't seem to understand that in a democracy, voters have a diversity of views and express them in an election. Rigid views and a conviction you occupy the moral highground? After 2016, one would expect a Democrat voter to have developed some insight on how 'basket of deplorables' is a way to alienate millions of voters.

Unwelcome as they were, the shitshows of the 2016 Referendum and US presidential election taught me how wrong I was to assume there's a right way to vote and if people don't do it then they're horrible people or in some sense moral vacuums.

You can get away with this for so long but at some point people will reject it and the harder you try to force them the more firmly their rejection will be. Even if it's to their long term disadvantage.

Same here. The Brexit referendum came as a real wake up for me. I had honestly thought everyone I knew was a remainder. I was so wrong. It's a lesson I hope I'll never forget.

*providing an abortion. Docs can go to jail for this in some US states if a heartbeat is detected at the time of the abortion.

ListeningQuietly · 16/10/2020 18:38

Lots of word soup going on ....

The USA has a Choice : Biden or Trump

So voters have to consider
Healthcare
Education
Housing
Climate Change
Democracy
Taxation

and walk away from conspiracy theories and memes and viral posts

Republicans have tried to suppress turnout for the last few decades
if Biden wins there is a chance that the USA will come up to electoral standards it demands of every other country
if Trump wins the current gerrymandering corruption will be set into legislation

along with the destruction of women's healthcare and education rights

its a binary choice between two old men at the heads of parties that are each dysfunctional
but have different paymasters

Delphinium20 · 16/10/2020 18:37

I'm an American and Biden is leaps and bounds better than Trump. Our own security agencies, our environmental and health agencies have been warning and whistle blowing for years regarding what Trump administration is doing to destroy our civil governance. Our House found him guilty of crimes, our IRS are auditing him for fraud...our CIA warns him repeatedly about threats from foreign countries and he IGNORES them (his own lawyer was at risk for Russian influence). Trump is a danger to the world and I'm not naive to think that him backing a one-off bathroom bill is enough to consider voting for him. My god, he's already packing our courts with the most conservative anti-woman judges. Women in America have already lost rights over their own reproductive decisions. It's only going to get worse. Doctors in some states can now go to jail for having an abortion. How is that acceptable? There is NOTHING pro-woman about Trump. if Americans don't vote for Biden, it's giving the vote to Trump because of the way our 1-party, electoral system works.

I didn’t see anything in the link that disproves the laptop story. What are you asserting here?

This really bothers me though:

We don’t want to incentivize hacking by allowing Twitter to be used as distribution for possibly illegally obtained materials,” the platform stated

So why did they allow links to Trump’s taxes? That wasn’t legally got (and we should know his tax details so I agree with letting the story go out there!). And the Snowden files let Americans know that the NSA was spying on them and we should be able to discuss the implications of that, though the material was illegally obtained. Same for Podesta’s emails.

Journalists break stories all the time by using materials that have a dodgy provenance, but the public service it provides should be obvious. The government won’t just let us know about their malfeasance, after all!

Excellent post. The aim is total narrative control. Consistency is another casualty. Along with freedom of speech.

Twitter operates by the maxim of Rules for thee but not for me. Trump is a literal Nazi so anything is fair game. Shh don't question the narrative, just accept it.

The Democrats don't have Silicon Valley in their pockets - they couldn't afford the actual billionaires running amuck there

With few exceptions, they are in the pocket of Silicon Valley, who are generally pro-capitalist but believe in ‘shepherding’ people’s opinions. You can find some commentary from big social media/tech firms after the shock (to them) of the 2016 elections. Showed that they could not in fact control their users as much as they would have liked ....

@Auridon

"You don't see Trump trying to control the media the conversation and the populace? You haven't seen him crying fake news when people report his own previous words? You haven't seen him threaten Twitter and Facebook? You haven't seen him trying to get people to boycott the Washington Post? Bigging up Breitbart and refusing to take questions from established news outlets with fact checkers on staff? Stopping the daily press briefing when it became obvious people would analyse what he said rather than just print what he wanted?"

And let's not forget the many times Trump has called journalists "enemies of the people" and openly encouraged violence against them. There were T-shirts seen at Trump rallies portraying journalists with a noose around their necks. It doesn't get more fascist than that.

Now those points I do agree with (though I disagree with pretty much everything else fanny has said on this thread).

Trump overtly sets out to control the media - controlling access to the pressers, telling outright lies with a straight face, accusing journalists of "peddling fake news". His attitude to the press is terrifying.

I think the Democrats also have a bad track record - they just do it a different way, by having Silicon Valley in their pockets.

Bit like the contrast between the Telegraph and the Guardian here - the Telegraph will sometimes blatantly make shit up, whereas the Guardian just buries stories it doesn't think are morally worthy for its readership. So both readerships end up with a very slanted, compartmentalised world view, just brought about in different ways.

Baby, I think I'm with you. I intensely dislike Trump for the boorish, shallow, vain misogynist he clearly is, but he at least doesn't seem to be so intent on controlling the media, the conversation, the populace.

Frightening times. As said above, there will be strife whoever wins.

PS
When Giuliani was mayor of New York, he was the right man in the right place at the right time.
He did amazing things for the city and his record will always show that.

His relationship with Trump has done him and the city and the nation a disservice.

Whether or not one believes Tara Reade
the USA has a choice
Biden or Trump
and it has to make that choice based around

  • the candidate
  • their VP candidate
  • who they are likely to appoint to senior posts
  • their policies on MANY, MANY things

Healthcare
Housing
Education
Climate Change
Trade

Americans have to vote for the least worst
and hope that the winner protects the rights of their children and grandchildren

BlueCatRedCat · 16/10/2020 17:50

@pequini

The smear campaign against Biden to make him look just as bad as Trump is sickening. All the ploys have been tried on this thread. Just as bad as one another. I'd vote for no one. He's old. He has dementia. Just fuck off. It's so transparent. Anyone with a moral bone in their body will be voting for Biden. There are a lot of Americans on Mumsnet. Including this one and you can fuck right off trying to hand that bastard another 4 years.
Once again, don't you believe Tara Reade? Or does Me Too only apply to women with the correct political opinions?
BlackForestCake · 16/10/2020 17:49

In the abusive messages above calling us Trump trolls etc you do get an illuminating insight into the head of the liberal apparatchik.

They are the same in the US or UK or anywhere else. Screaming about how important it is that one faction of the country’s billionaires defeats the other faction. Yet refusing to make any concessions to the people whose votes they need, but still demanding them. You have to vote for us, you have nowhere else to go.

In their minds, voters exist to serve their candidates and parties, not the other way round.

That is why they get so hugely enraged when voters say they might not vote for shitty candidates and shitty parties that offer them fuck all.

The aim is to deflect blame onto the voters when the bogeyman candidate wins. No. Fuck off. If it’s so important to defeat the bogeyman, put up a better candidate.

BelleHathor · 16/10/2020 17:48

But the other question is, how were Twitter on to this plan so quickly? It was broken by a mainstream source - and immediately suppressed
The laptop may not "exist", as it was damaged hence it being taken to a computer repair shop.
From reading the article it seems that the when whoever took the laptop to the shop didn't return to collect it the owner examined its contents what he found was so shocking that he notified the FBI and the senate for his own protection. This was apparently in December 2019 and Rudy has been saying all year that he has something big. Someone from the FBI collected the hard drive and then silence until a couple of days ago. So the Dems, Facebook,Twitter, Instagram etc would have had a contingency plan in case the info dropped hence the speed.
BTW some pictures were released are real including the one with Hunter asleep with a crack pipe hanging out of his mouth. The Chinese Communist Party allegedly also has copies of all the information which presents a security risk.
