Am slightly baffled by the TW in the OP's title though - can't see relevant reference in the DM article, have they edited it out

TW means "trigger warning" in this case!

happydappy2 · 15/10/2020 18:40

The sentencing guidelines state that rape of a child under 13 carries a starting sentence of 10 years in custody.....this just doesn't make sense that this horrific person is not locked up. Will email.

MumbleJunction · 15/10/2020 18:38

Emailed, that is horrible. I have a 6 year old and I don't have words.

Fairineouf · 15/10/2020 18:37

Anyone know if there's a petition for this? Have looked and can't see one. Absolutely horrendous, I can't imagine what the family must be going through. Perhaps this would be better moved to AIBU to get more people to write in and complain?

So our justice system have decided that the rape of a child is now mitigated by a payment of £2700. That's all they need and they can rape away without loss of freedom.

Unbelievable.

And the little girl actually testified. They put a tiny child on the stand to testify.... and then let the man walk.

LemmysAceCard · 15/10/2020 18:32

The justice system values money over victims.

Don’t pay tax or your tv licence you get sent to prison. Any type of fraud will gain lengthy prison sentences. Benefit fraud and embezzlement, again long prison sentences.

Crimes against women - a slap on the bloody wrist.

Straven123 · 15/10/2020 18:29

I would think you need to put your name address and phone no if you email.
Thanks for Centre of Womens Justice link, I can donate some of the money I'm not spending thanks to Covid!

Artesia · 15/10/2020 18:29

Thank you so much for flagging this- email sent, and will send hard copy too

williowrosenburg · 15/10/2020 18:28

This does seem extremely lenient!
The poor girl and her family.

Just to compare I know someone recently sentenced to four and half years in prison for having a sexual conversation online with someone underage....

Not saying the above is ok, but when you compare the two cases it just seems ridiculous!

BrassicaRabbit · 15/10/2020 18:27

Fuck. This. Shit.

Will definitely complain.

Catnuzzle · 15/10/2020 18:26

Email sent. This is truly appalling.

@cabotstove

I'm sorry but how did we get to the point that raping a child doesn't result in a jail sentence?!
A world in which 1.5% of rapes reported to police (and we all know most don't report - I have so many friends who've been raped, and just one ever reported it) even get charged - far less result in convictions. And a world in which Netflix can screen Cuties and see nothing wrong with child actors portraying explicitly sexualised behaviour, at just eleven years old. Real children being instructed to do that, to be filmed for adult eyes. And nobody at Netflix saw a problem.

Rape has been decriminalised, in fact if not in theory. Women's rights have been in sharp reverse now for some time - conviction rates have fallen off a cliff in the past few years - but the media reporting insists women have never had it so good, so most women simply don't know that that's not true. And if you look at any society - any, worldwide - the rights, protections and outcomes for children within that society are directly and clearly linked to the status afforded to women by that society. A culture that values women, will value children.

There's lip service paid to the impact of male violence against women and girls. But the Establishment don't take it remotely seriously as the public health obscenity it is. Rape Crisis are so grotesquely underfunded many waiting lists are closed, and 60% of referrals to women's refuges are turned away because they're all full. Meanwhile, male people are housed in women's prisons, and Labour bully and victimise women who point out that sex, and not gender identity, is at the root of women's oppression and that forcing services for vulnerable women to become mixed sex harms the women who need them. Meanwhile, people claim that Women Do It Too, even though we know that statistically, that's bullshit. At least 98% of sexual offending is male.

We have never needed feminism more.

Anyone wanting to do something could do worse than to set up a small monthly donation to the Centre For Women's Justice. They're the last line of resistance for women's rights in law, and they do incredible work on almost no money. A fiver a month adds up to sixty quid a year, and if everyone who could, gave a sum they could afford to lose, they'd be infinitely better able to defend us all.

Meanwhile writing this letter, or sending this email, costs nothing at best and a stamp at worst. And all of us can do that.

@WaspRelatedEmergency

This makes me wonder about the judge. Why be so lenient?
My thoughts too.

Disgusting sentence.

I am really struggling to work it out. In the event he had some mental disorder that made him not fully culpable, surely he would have been detained under the mental health act or something? So it doesn't seem that's the case. I can't think of any other circumstances that would mean he can basically get off scot free.
ImaSababa · 15/10/2020 18:19

Tragic but not surprising. The judiciary and upper echelons of the establishment are crawling with nonces.

RuffleCrow · 15/10/2020 18:17

I feel like we really don't know who's pulling the strings behind the scenes here. Rape is being treated like a victimless crime - because those doing the sentencing don't regard women and children as human beings.

@DialSquare

Sickening. That poor little girl. If someone took the law into their own hands and harmed this scumbag in anyway, you can bet they wouldn't get off so lightly.
I am not condoning any kind of vigilante justice in any way, but I hope he sleeps easy with his name, address and photo all over the news. He'd be run out of my estate- or, more likely, be too scared to come back to his own address.
JuiceBogTrotter · 15/10/2020 18:14

£2,500. Is that really all that little girl is worth? The more I think about this, the anger I become.

jessstan1 · 15/10/2020 18:12

I don't get this at all, it's scandalous that the guy wasn't locked up.

Kantastic · 15/10/2020 18:06

He was also fined £200 and ordered to pay £2,500 to the victim as well as being put on the Sexual Offenders' Register for five years.

So on top of everything else he's only on the sexual offender's register for five years?

What exactly is the point in having a sexual offender's register if a man convicted for raping a 5yo 6 years ago doesn't show up on it?

I don't even have words for that sentence. I would like to find out more about the judge responsible for it.

timetest · 15/10/2020 18:06

Is it possible to name the judge and read his summing up comments and reasons for sentencing so it can be included in the letter?

BovaryX · 15/10/2020 18:03

@Indoctro

Should be life in prison
What message does this kind of non custodial sentence send to other recidivist rapists? It really is an outrage. The judge is a frickin disgrace.
