Not sure what to make of this to be honest.

also if we are talking fancy words and Pink News, did anyone see this from Helen Lewis?

I do not resile from my opinion that book reviews are generally better if the author has read the book.

Grin the Pink News "radfem" who totally exists could stand to take a few writing lessons from Helen.

Kantastic · 15/10/2020 00:55

I've heard the PN crew are desperate for traffic and I really wouldn't put it past them to start threads on here to boost it.

Practically the only people who bother with them are GC feminists diligently correcting their lies.

So here's an archive for anyone who cares about whatever this person is talking about: archive.is/Bc8lN

FloralBunting · 15/10/2020 00:03

I'm going to plump for 'Unconvincing' as my final choice.

EvenSupposing · 14/10/2020 23:53

Hectoring? Grin

FloralBunting · 14/10/2020 23:41

Possibly, but I doubt she's a militant feminist either.

Strident, perhaps? Grin

EvenSupposing · 14/10/2020 23:39

@FloralBunting

Let's define radical feminist again, shall we? What does this wordsmith think the root of women's oppression is? Given that the 'radical' in radfem comes from radix which is Latin for root.

Does she maybe think our oppression is because we aren't kind enough? Or that the root is maybe our femininity? What is it that all women share regardless of culture, socialization, personality, preferences, politics, sexuality etc?

It's our sex. That's it. Our physical bodies make us women, and it is the disadvantages of our biology that form the basis of our sex being limited by gendered expectations of the world around us.

That's why we challenge those expectations, that's why we campaign for accommodations and legal rights to spaces for privacy, dignity and safety, away from the other sex who share none of those disadvantages.

Radical feminist doesn't mean extremely feminist. It's not a statement about how very committed we are to feminism.

Words matter, people, and they actually mean things. That's what language is.

Do you think she means 'militant feminist'? I do think people mix them up. Confused

@PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe

Well, she's a better writer than Rowling, allowing that that's obviously a very low bar.
If she was a better writer than Rowling, she would be working in Rosie Duffield's office, quiting her job because only women have a cervix, and giving interviews to Penis News.
EvenSupposing · 14/10/2020 23:02

Rowling's magic is her world building and the flood of creative ideas she has. Her descriptions of Hogwarts are incredible because she has so many amazing ideas on every page. A lesser writer would make a book or even a series out of the Room or Requirement or the Mirror of Erised but she just keeps lobbing them in. She does that one thing extraordinarily well in those books.

She also writes a compelling character and her humanity is a huge strength but it's the imagination that has earned her her billions.

And I'm loving Helen's work with PN as another kind of art form exemplified. Grin

She might've reached the lofty heights of E L James.

Oh, I know shit writers can sell (I once read a Tom Clancy book out of curiosity) but her workwomanlike prose is fine for kids books.

She gets better as the series goes on and many of the other important aspects of good writing (sense of place, character, plot) are great. Kids like reading Rowling and like reading because if Rowling- I think that's plenty.

ChattyLion · 14/10/2020 22:49

How about, every time this type of shite comes out, we email or send her a card to say thanks/Rise up women/keep up the good work or whatever, so she knows real women appreciate her whatever Prick News or whoever else including from her own party Hmm is doing to try to take her reputation down.

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 14/10/2020 22:47

Radical feminist doesn't mean extremely feminist. It's not a statement about how very committed we are to feminism.

Yes, I'm pretty sure this is what some people think it means!

Impatiens · 14/10/2020 22:42

Wow. 'Hollow succour.'

P**K News just gone right up in my estimation (not hard to do from a subterranean start but, still..)

EvenSupposing · 14/10/2020 22:41

I thought it an ironic rhetorical flourish Grin

InflamatoryWrit · 14/10/2020 22:38

Totes

EvenSupposing · 14/10/2020 22:33

Oh bless. A person who doesn't understand what an extensive vocabulary is for and thinks it's just to replace short words with longer ones.

Although if the aim was to sound like a pompous twat it's been totes successful.

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 14/10/2020 22:30

She might've reached the lofty heights of E L James. Food for thought.

EmpressJKRowlingSpartacus · 14/10/2020 22:30

A ‘cis lesbian’ who took her story to Penis News? Says it all.

RandomGel · 14/10/2020 22:30

It is interesting how the CEO seems to imply that he sees himself as a ‘great entrepreneur’ of a ‘global media business’.

Well he is right in one respect that he is entrepreneurial in his reviving of the ‘penny dreadful’ for a 21st century audience, but he ain’t no Murdoch.

Historians will make a study of the PN, as they do the Penny Awful, to explore the mindset of a society in the grip of ‘end of empire’ (Douglas Murray) dysphoria.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 14/10/2020 22:26

Yeah, imagine if she'd been good- she might have been really successful.

That said, I think Harry Potter is a little more grounded in reality than this article.

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 14/10/2020 22:23

TalkingtoLangClegintheDark · 14/10/2020 22:17

However, the team member who just quit told Duffield: “I am a radical feminist; this is central to my politics. I have spent a lot of time thinking and reading about ‘gender critical feminism‘.

“It is tedious and unedifying to watch you claim that you are being bullied or victimised by trans Labour members, young activists, and even the co-chair of LGBT Labour.

“I think you will ultimately find the adulation of people with JK Rowling hashtags in their bios proves hollow succour.”

For those who don’t want to click on P** News, here’s my favourite part of the piece - such very fine writing deserves to be shared more widely, don’t you agree?

Whoever they are, making the claim that they are a radfem would suggest that their creative and imaginative prowess is on a par with that of JK herself. And they’re very good at using lovely long words: unedifying, victimised, adulation - ooh, delicious!

But le comble is surely that last sentence, which would have been worthy of Private Eye’s Pseud’s Corner, back in the day! Hollow succour. Marvellous. I can sense the author's bosom literally swelling with pride at having written those words, and rightly so.

Thank you, OP, for bringing this gem to our attention. And in return we have educated you about the existence of internalised misogyny in women! What a fruitful exchange.

(And also it appears that lesbians are not a completely homogenous group! Astounding! Is someone going to tell me they don’t all wear sensible shoes, too? Goodness me.)

InflamatoryWrit · 14/10/2020 22:17

Oh yes of course, welcome to MN, OP.

Not sure what to make of this to be honest

MNers always willing to help out. No probs.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 14/10/2020 22:12

Welcome to MN.

I'm not sure a Pink News article attacking a female MP because her anonymous 'staffer' has allegedly quit is really relevant to FWR.

If you report your OP you can ask MNHQ to move it to sporner corner.
