@SirSamuelVimes

I think GG is probably a total arse. As are a lot of people. But total arses can also be right. I'm not interested in judging who is saying a thing, I'm interested in judging what they are saying.
You don't think why they are saying it is also important? By understanding who they are then you often get an idea of why they said what they did, and in the world of politics that is important because few are playing straight these days particularly on the right.
theskyispink · 05/10/2020 21:46

@Babdoc

He seems to be a reformed character. He’s even fighting the ghastly SNP and their independence nonsense! I’m gobsmacked to find myself agreeing with him on anything, let alone two separate issues. But here we are. I’ll take allies wherever I can find them. My enemy’s enemy, etc...
Why is independence nonsense?

@7Days

Quilette is far right? Ive read some linked articles from there and it seems fairly centrist, I wouldn't bracket it with Breitbart. I'm not a regular reader though to be fair.
I'd say closer to alt-right, and run by an outspoken anti-feminist who seems to hold both second and third wave feminism in equal contempt and whose pockets are being lined and platform growing every time a GC post goes up on there.

I've spent much of my life watching the Tory Party tear up working class people's lives and in particular working class women's lives
😂
As if the Labour Party haven't also done that.

Look, women's rights are a cross-party political issue.

Whoever gets it on the right, let them talk.
Whoever gets it on the left let them talk.

While we're at it, whoever doesn't get it, let them talk too. Democracy is about sharing ideas not blocking them.

@7Days

But jj you said something on here which I profoundly disagreed with last week - how can I agree with you now re GG? This purity spiralling is making my head spin
It's not about purity politics it's about consistent politics and recognising there is more to life than the argument over trans rights. I wouldn't care if Breitbart or Quilette became the most pro trans inclusion publications on the web, I would never link to them or write for them because they are racists and misogynists and in some cases dangerously far right and I don't want to help them. And tbh the same applies to The Spectator, yes there are layers of extremism within the right, but I've spent much of my life watching the Tory Party tear up working class people's lives and in particular working class women's lives and I dont want to help them either. If there are occassionally areas where my views might align with theirs, then so what, I still don't want to help them, let them get on with their thing and I'll get on with mine. They have every right to their opinions, and to publish their views, but I'm not going to do anything at all to help them achieve their aims. That's not some crazy purity spiral, it's having some basic principals. Because if the likes of Breitbart and Quillette ever even get close to the society they want then trans people's right to access single sex spaces is going to be pretty low down the list of things any of us have to worry about.

You have gotta love George i disagree with him on lots but at least he speaks honestly and he should definitely not non platformed or cancelled.

jj1968 · 05/10/2020 12:54

@SunsetBeetch

i don't think you listened properly jj. He didn't "once meet" her, she is a friend of his.

I have to say I do find him rather slimy. It might be that Big Brother cat incident...

Yeah if she actually exists. But that's what a woman means to gorgeous george, someone to paw at and patronise, to tenderly kiss on the cheek and then, with relief when she becomes a chap again, to give her a manly handshake, because handshakes are for manly men not girls. But he doesn't hate gays thank goodness he reminds us, not like his boss Putin.

What did Michael Portillo say? I'm all ears!

Excellent - you will need them. (Your ears I mean).

There was a long thread on this at the time.

Sometimes you don't need to see a posters name to recognise who wrote it. Grin

jj1968 · 05/10/2020 12:33

Eugh, I feel like I need a shower after watching that. He's not transphobic because he once met a trans woman and tenderly kissed her on the cheek, yuck, especially yuck given his previous views on consent. And what ridiculous hyperbole, so some kid burnt a copy of JK's book on youtube, people burn things all the time, people burnt Bob Dylan's records when he started using an electric guitar, it's hardly akin to the Salem Witch Trials. Repeated slurs based on mental health as well and all through the medium of a homophobic murderous regime's state tv channel.

SunsetBeetch · 05/10/2020 12:29

Come on now we all know ths score by now. You can only agree that a person made some good points if you agree with everything else they've ever said. That's how adult discourse works /s

Hmm

George Galloway is still a misogynistic arse

What did he say in the video that you disagree with?

CopsCantCatchCriminals · 05/10/2020 12:19

@cloudylemonade13

George Galloway is a hate-filled, sectarian misogynist - he is not a "good man".
