Signing off with a final sentence - 'there are many, many stereotypes associated with our gender. But our SEX we share.'

Hopefully she will go on to speak more about this once she has exited woke central.

I keep misreading the thread title as:

Jenni Murray's Finest Hour

Lottapianos · 01/10/2020 20:33

What a perfect way to sign off. Bloody good for her. Really hoping to hear lots more from her on this issue

kulaexchange · 01/10/2020 20:02

I wonder if she'll go over to the new Times radio?! She wouldn't be censored there ...

lanadelgrey · 01/10/2020 19:44

It’s great hearing that final sentence repeated on news bulletins

BabyItsAWildWorld · 01/10/2020 19:39

I ❤️ JM

BalhamWoman · 01/10/2020 19:38

Definitely the end of an era.

RozWatching · 01/10/2020 19:22

@SquishySquirmy

It might be because they didn't know in advance that she would say the final part of that sentence?
I think you might be right Squishy! She's a wily old witch Grin
ValancyRedfern · 01/10/2020 19:20

Diamonds and ryst is my favourite song in the world ever too. Looking forward to liste ING to this!

JKRforPM · 01/10/2020 19:20

Jenni Murray you absolute legend ❤️❤️

It’s fantastic that more and more women in the public eye are able to come forward about being ‘gender critical’ and questioning the whole TWAW/TRA/women just be kind line, and i think it’s important to acknowledge that JKR has had a massive impact on inspiring other women to come forward.

There are also many many women who have been telling everyone about this for a long time and often their voices were ignored or shouted down, and their work on this must not be forgotten either.

I’m unashamedly raising a glass tonight to all of the wonderful women who continue to ensure that feminism centres actual females.

PigeonToe · 01/10/2020 19:17

It's hours later and I'm still a bit emotional whenever I think of that sign-off.

Jane Garvey doesn't seem to think it's important. I don't really know why.

AbsintheFriends · 01/10/2020 19:17

I wonder if there was panic at the BBC, and their instant reaction was to try to reframe the message in the news bulletin immediately after the programme?

And then, frantic meetings in the next hour and the creeping realisation that it was out there, and the message had been heard by the tens of thousands of women who had tuned in for her last programme. Too late. No choice but to go with it.

And I wonder if that was exactly what JM planned?

JM is a Queen, I hope she carries on the fight for Women's rights and equality.

I like JC but, I agree with pp that it is a good thing she is going, I don't think she has the fire in her belly for the fight.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/10/2020 19:10

The six o clock news on R4 finished with her final statement, and mentioned the play-out 'I am woman'.Smile

StandUpStraight · 01/10/2020 19:02

Wonderful, Jenni. Can’t wait to see what she does when she is free of the BBC.

The Telegraph has picked up the story of the message in those final words: www.telegraph.co.uk/radio/radio-presenters/sex-sharejenni-murrays-last-womans-hour-sound-feminist-putting/

Datun · 01/10/2020 18:59

Her piece in the, Telegraph I believe, talking about the vicar who transitioned to be a woman was an eye-opener.

The vicar was primarily occupied with what frock they would wear to give their first service as a woman.

Even after Jenny pointed out that women had not been able to enter the profession, and did this particular person not see the sexism that women have been subjected to, they looked blank and went on again about their frock.

Knowing what I know now, it makes me feel a bit ill, to be honest. And Jenni was certainly contemptuous of the attitude.

She was equally scathing about India Willoughby's idea that unshaved legs on men was fine, but on women it was dirty, and not getting the sexism.

It was fairly evident that she was warned to say nothing else about the entire issue after that.

As a pp has said I bet she was unbuckling her scold's bridle as she walked out the door.

It's so brilliant that this might be her hill...

As a pp has said

Another airing of the clip on R4 just now. It really does seem to resonate more powerfully each time I hear it.

Her tone is quiet and conversational, but bloody hell, the echo of those softly-spoken words will carry far and wide.

After signing off, after her final sentence, Jenni Murray signed the JKR support letter. Her name is at the top ❤️

I listened to it again this afternoon. What an amazing episode.

NewlyGranny · 01/10/2020 18:22

40.53 over Joan Baez. 😉

JoodyBlue · 01/10/2020 17:21

Jenni if you should read this you have provided sanity and support in my life. Wonderful final programme which I will revisit. Final sentences just exquisite. Just exquisite. I bow to you.Flowers

I'm a long term fan of JG, I listened to her on Radio 5Live for many years, but I don't think she's quite the right fit for WH and I'm not sorry she's moving on.

wellbehavedwomen · 01/10/2020 15:24

I love her. I grew up listening to her on Woman's Hour, and am so glad and relieved that she's with us on this.

SapphoJones · 01/10/2020 15:15

YES JENNI! Perfect sign off Star You will be missed but honestly, WH is moving further and further from its roots and I am disappointed that only brief, forced, obsequious lip service has been paid to this very real threat to women's rights. I'm excited to see what's next for JM.

Shedbuilder · 01/10/2020 14:28

@LittlePearl

I thought it was slightly odd that Jane Garvey didn't make any contribution.

I'm not as convinced as others here that JG is on the same page on this issue. I'd love to be proved wrong. I suppose she might just be brilliant at keeping her cards close to her chest but I have sometimes thought she seems quite hostile to women arguing the GC perspective.

LittlePearl, I know a lot of people on this board think Jane Garvey's a totally on-board GC feminist but I hear what you hear. Admittedly I don't listen every day so maybe I just hear the slightly off stuff. I know Jane's a single parent, I know she has older children who may struggle at school or college if their mum is known to be GC, I know she's at the kind of age when many women worry a lot about the end stage of their career, so I can understand that she may feel the need to be really careful about what she says. But she's been unduly sharp and officious to GC women too many times now for me to trust her and on the Fortunately podcast she's sometimes unpleasantly sarcastic about issues covered on WH. I have no idea what she really thinks and it's not comfortable. With Jenni you know where you stand, but with Jane? I'm glad she's going.
Cuntysnark · 01/10/2020 14:17

Another one. Thrilled to read it but when I heard it I teared up.
