according to nick cohen on twitter, amanda craig novellist has been dropped as a judge from mslexia because she signed the jkr letter - a womens writing magazine! - absolutely shocking. and frightening.

@queenofknives

FFS. This is stupid and ridiculous and will probably spell the end for Mslexia.

But tagging KMH on twitter just seems hypocritical. So now we are going to cancel a woman writer because she spoke out about Amanda Craig? That was stupid and wrong and maybe it was an attempt at bullying, but it's Mslexia who's at fault for capitulating to her demands. They should have just told her to piss off. Now it looks like a bun fight, and the moral high ground has been lost.

KMH did have a (polite but scolding) public exchange with AC so someone was bound to make the connection, but yeah, tagging her in does make it all seem hypocritical. AC didn't announce being dropped either, she's said thanks to people who have sent commiserations but she's being v clear about not encouraging bullying of anyone (which is a bit more decent than KMH's 'poor me' stance).

How much funding do Mslexia get, and how much advertising do they have? AFAIK advertising is - or used to be - much more important to magazines than subscribers.

@SerenityNowwwww

I have to ask - where did the name come from? When I first saw it I assumed it was an educational mag for women (maybe dyslexia?). Anyway. Now Mxlxia?
Hope the picture displays OK. From the magazine explaining the name.

I think I read in a previous issue that the similarity between Mslexia and dyslexia was deliberate because of the difficulties women face in writing and publishing.

@Helmetbymidnight

some self-righteous child. but the responsibility lies with mslexia- they should have laughed and told her to fuck off. why they didn't is bewildering.
Yup. The correct response should have been "Off you pop then."

I noticed that the woman running the FB group stated her pronouns but let it go.

Have also noticed that they state 'anyone who identifies as a woman' in their submission guidelines and let that go too, but personally felt it was odd given that of the magazine's focus over the years is around the barriers faced by women due to their biology - eg managing a career with children, how many children should you have, does one child equal one book less to write etc etc.

Have been thinking of resubscribing but was feeling slightly resentful of the 'state your pronouns' compelled groupspeak so hadn't, and now definitely won't.

SunsetBeetch · 30/09/2020 09:03

Absolutely fuxking ridiculous

SerenityNowwwww · 30/09/2020 09:02

I hope it was a years supply of their cat litter tray liner magazine. Return used...

queenofknives · 30/09/2020 08:56

I've cancelled my subscription and asked them to take me off their mailing list. Actually I just realised I've sent my strongly-worded email to their letters page! I actually won runners up prize a couple of times in their competitions but I won't be claiming those as any kind of honour any more.

Muttonindistress · 30/09/2020 08:50

I will be also be cancelling my subscription to Mslexia today, and will most definitely be letting them know why.

I’m genuinely upset about this. Not because I’m particularly attached to the mag (I’ve always felt it was a bit too pleased with itself) but because of this phenomenon of women attacking women for sticking up for other women. It’s baffling and utterly depressing.

I don’t know Amanda Craig’s work, but will certainly buying some of her books later (along with Troubled Blood which I haven’t got yet).

highame · 30/09/2020 08:42

Around 4000 signatures now, and international too

In case this hasn't been mentioned.

Milicentbystander72 · 30/09/2020 08:31

Sorry just seen in the thread that this is known news Wink

Milicentbystander72 · 30/09/2020 08:30

The person who complained was another novelist Kiran Millwood Hargrave. I believe this author may have been another member of a competition judging panel Amanda Craig was on.

Really unbelievable.

Kiran Millwood Hargrave has now locked her a Twitter account.

LaVitaPuoEsserePiuBella · 30/09/2020 08:27

@PigeonToe

What kind of writer can't bear to be on a panel with another writer who disagrees with them? What kind of author dooms themselves to an intellectual cul-de-sac like that? Mindblowing.
Yes, I absolutely agree with this. Why does a writer, of all people, think that everyone needs to share the same opinion? Isn't the most interesting writing often born of wrestling with internal/external conflict?
SerenityNowwwww · 30/09/2020 08:22

I hope those cancelling their membership - do let them know.

Isn’t the person who lit this firework an employee? How can anyone argue against an open letter arguing that bullying and rape/death threats? What type of person is this? If I knew them in person I’d definitely be asking the question.

highame · 30/09/2020 08:18

'Go Woke, Go Broke' nothing else to say really.

BothALarkAndAnOwl · 30/09/2020 07:51

If anyone’s on the Thresholds shirt story platform on FB, supporters of this decision are coming out of the woodwork. I imagine the thread will get pulled soon but any support would be welcome. The wokesters are already there..... (Also cancelling my Mslexia subscription.)

JamieLeeCurtains · 30/09/2020 01:31

@nepeta

I think the tombstone of feminism will read "BE KIND".
Or maybe, Well they tried, but they just weren't kind enough. So we killed them anyway.
TheoSawUs · 30/09/2020 00:54

Thanks for this - I’ve also just bought Vicious Circle.

StillNotAGirl · 30/09/2020 00:34

I'd not come across Amanda Craig before but she looks to be an author worth following so ordered one of her novels

Vargas · 29/09/2020 23:57

And while I’m at it I’ll buy an Amanda Craig book...

Vargas · 29/09/2020 23:56

I’ve sent them a message via Their Contact Us page. I’ll be cancelling my subscription tomorrow. What a fucking own goal by them.

nepeta · 29/09/2020 23:22

wellbehavedwomen:
"It's absolutely universities, and it's adults, not just the students. A couple of the nicest, brightest women I know revert to bots with this subject. By which I mean they don't make sensible, reasoned arguments. They parrot all the lines. Debating the right to exist/are trans people not human/transwomen are women (so no need to explore any conflict of rights because the long, long history of penis havers oppressing vagina havers, and being bigger and stronger in order to do it, is erased...) it's honestly bonkers and as has often been said, religious in overtones. Nothing else causes such rabid, kneejerk responses. Pavlovian levels of indoctrination."

So they don't even see a possible conflict of rights or the kind of situation where women's rights would be lost if all the demands of trans rights activists would be satisfied? They have learned all this without any nuanced context, then.

My own surmise has always been that very young and fairly privileged white women in the West are enjoying the benefits of the second wave of feminism in that places like universities are not as sexist as they were not so long ago. It is possible, at that life stage and for that demographic to assume that women and men are fairly equal (with the exception of sexual violence) and that all the problems have been sorted.

But I would still think that smart individuals would consider the consequences of all the changes that are being demanded, and not only the consequences for transgender people but everyone else. Of course the mantra 'transwomen are women' makes that fairly difficult, though one might get somewhere by pointing out that the mantra certainly doesn't serve the transwomen if it is applied in, say, a medical context where obeying the mantra could result in death even. In other words, it is not true that 'transwomen are women' in all possible contexts.
