Another subscriber here. Jeez most of their subscribers must be MNers....

Is it me having a Luddite moment or have they removed the “contact us” page?

SerenityNowwwww · 29/09/2020 20:58

Shown their true colours. They haven't responded to any tweets either.

And I'm sure the person who kicked this off - on twitter remember - they didnt pick up the phone or just withrdaw themselves - is not getting a teensy % of the vitriol and threats that women get for standing up for women. Its not right to hurl insults and threats - we are better than that. But I am sure they is not scared for their life.

Kit19 · 29/09/2020 20:55

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel

The letter was against making death and rape threats against women you disagree with. So Mslexia is in favour of death and rape threats. Rightio.
That’s the line my complaint will take - I presume you as an organisation are in favour of death threats to women who say things you don’t agree with
Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 29/09/2020 20:52

I’ll be asking them if they endorse the screenshots on this tweet Angry

I honestly feel quite sick about this. Women must toe the line at all times, even to the extent of not speaking out against rape and death threats made to another woman who doesn't completely toe the line.

lakesidewinter · 29/09/2020 20:25

I'm am struggling to understand why any organization, let alone one that it meant to be is some way pro woman is against speaking out when a woman receives death threats etc.
They are seriously ok with women being threatened if these women happen to disagree with them on a topic?

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 29/09/2020 20:14

I'm angry and upset at Mslexia but only mildly surprised.

Their competitions and submissions are open to anyone who identifies as a woman. The woman running their Facebook group uses the word "womxn" and stated her pronouns when introducing herself to the group. I think they've been travelling along the TWAW path a while.

This has just cemented my belief that they've lost sight of their aim, to promote and encourage women's writing in a world where misogyny makes it so much harder for us to have confidence in our words, to find time to write, to be published, to be praised for our writing.

I'll be cancelling my subscription and going to have a browse of Amanda Craig novels.

Siablue · 29/09/2020 20:14

I agree that she does not deserve a pile on. It would have been honourable of her to resign if that was her view ( properly resign rather than saying I will resign if you don’t sack Amanda).

The thing that gets me is that she said to Amanda Craig you need to consider who you are aligning yourself to. But has Kiran considered who she is aligning herself with. People who send death and rape threats. And this is at a time when we are facing a national crisis and the number of women who are being murdered as a result of domestic abuse has almost doubled.

Also everyone knows that the point of a panel is to get people with different views otherwise you would just have one person who can tell us the one acceptable view we all can have.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 29/09/2020 20:13

@Helmetbymidnight

some self-righteous child. but the responsibility lies with mslexia- they should have laughed and told her to fuck off. why they didn't is bewildering.
This, exactly. As with Gillian Philip.

@nowiamhuffy

I feel perplexed at KMH's stance. Craig hasn't even said she agrees with JKR's views, just that she stands against all the bullying and misogony and rape threats. Also, as usual it seems the women who speak out suffer more than the men.
KMH is part of the super-woke (and young, privileged) children's literature circle that includes a bestselling author who has fundraised for Mermaids and bullied Rachel Rooney (My Body Is Me!) and others. She's not exceptional in her stance.

Mslexia, on the other hand, should know better.

"I offered to step down. I didn't complain."

Like butter wouldn't melt Hmm

And shame on Mslexia for doing it. Grow a spine for goodness sake.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 29/09/2020 19:58

I've just emailed and will cancel my subscription once I've heard back from them.

notnowdennis · 29/09/2020 19:45

I cancelled my Mslexia subscription when they started saying that entries were for “anyone who identifies as a woman”. They couldn’t explain what they meant so I stopped buying after 20+ years. Stopped recommending it as well.

RoyalCorgi · 29/09/2020 19:41

A Vicious Circle is the only one of Craig's that I've read, and it's great.

Perfect quote from Strike. I absolutely loved Troubled Blood.

TheShoesa · 29/09/2020 19:40

Well, this has prompted me to buy a bundle of her books - to add to the Jeremy Duns I bought earlier this year when he stood up for JKR while others stayed silent (not sure if he signed the Times letter, though)

PigeonToe · 29/09/2020 19:39

KMH doesn't deserve a social media pile-on for this. It was a silly thing to do and I'm sure she'll regret it one day, but the responsibility for ditching Amanda Craig lies with Mslexia. They really need to work out what they actually stand for.

persistentwoman · 29/09/2020 19:34

I saw a suggestion that people might buy one of Amanda's books in support so I've just ordered "A Vicious Circle".

A quote from my current book by the esteemed Robert Galbraith which I think sums up the Mslexia decision perfectly:

'If you look carefully' said Strike, 'you might just see an asteroid passing through the house of bollocks

Aine82 · 29/09/2020 19:24

Don’t worry Kiran Millwood Hargrove, no need to protect your Tweets.

We’re not the crowd who will threaten to rape you, to curb stomp you, to choke on our appendages we don’t have, to murder you. We won’t start a hashtag #rip-insert woke name here-. We won’t boycott your books, or buy them to burn them.

Sorry if you’re uncomfortable judging a women’s writing competition with a woman author who was brave enough to speak out against such things.

Great way to get yourself some free publicity and the backing of the wokesters though 👍

wellbehavedwomen · 29/09/2020 19:23

Was it in universities? And all those health care related sites which erase the word 'woman' and replace it with either 'people' (thus giving the impression that some health issue affects all people) or with some horrible synechdoche (vulva-owners or uterus-havers), do they do this because the trans activists keep complaining nonstop or do they do it because they want to do it for other reasons? And if it is the former, is it mainly, say, the nonbinary female-bodied people who complain or trans men or trans women or all?

It's absolutely universities, and it's adults, not just the students. A couple of the nicest, brightest women I know revert to bots with this subject. By which I mean they don't make sensible, reasoned arguments. They parrot all the lines. Debating the right to exist/are trans people not human/transwomen are women (so no need to explore any conflict of rights because the long, long history of penis havers oppressing vagina havers, and being bigger and stronger in order to do it, is erased...) it's honestly bonkers and as has often been said, religious in overtones. Nothing else causes such rabid, kneejerk responses. Pavlovian levels of indoctrination.

The writer in question (who is wonderful - my eldest loves her book) isn't yet 30, and is a Cambridge grad. They're woker than woke there - which makes sense, given how enormously privileged most of them are, and how wholly unchallenging transactivism is to that privilege - their SU policy on trans rights was written by the woman who had that shit fit over Selina Todd's speaking at a feminist event. It's entirely possible that the writer in question has no idea anyone she respects feels differently - obviously she'll know many women who do feel very, very differently indeed, but none of them will dare apprise her of the fact. Women feel this one out carefully before talking openly, if they think their career could be harmed by someone reporting them. And given her behaviour over this, that caution will have been wise.

It's very sad. That she could read Rowling's words, and see them as hateful - far less deserving of rape and death threats. The fact any young women can believe another woman is deserving of such abuse, simply for having an opinion on women's rights, and women's very legal and social definition, is appalling. How can they not see that they are blindly centring male interests - even in the face of such male-patterned abusive behaviour? How can they not see that such starkly sexualised, sexist abuse aimed at one of us, is abuse aimed at all of us? That was the central thrust of Women's Aid's words, when condemning it. Does she now feel unable to support Women's Aid, too?

EdgeOfACoin · 29/09/2020 19:20

I hadn't heard of mslexia before.

So, let's see: a woman can't defend another woman being attacked without losing her job for it. A job at a magazine that exists to support women writers.

In order to keep their jobs at this magazine, women must only have the right kind of opinions. What constitutes the 'right' opinions is determined by other women, preferably the kind of women who have penises.

Got it. Mslexia must truly be a beacon of feminism.
