Apparently they will be discussing the GRA not changes.

But Dr Nic making brilliant points about sex-based rights. Trans rights are not just about having basic rights, but WOMEN"S rights.

AbsintheFriends · 29/09/2020 10:07

Bad connection - so frustrating!

ArabellaScott · 29/09/2020 10:05

This Heather Peto?

Excellent. Look forward to this!

Kit19 · 29/09/2020 10:03

AmericanSlang I think quite a few TRA refuse to go on WH if they have to debate directly. I think last time they covered this, the person from Stonewall or whoevere it was said it would be too traumatic to take part in a studio discussion - they just wanted to basically make a statement not answer questions rom the other side

AbsintheFriends · 29/09/2020 10:02

I hope they know how much their credibility and the future of the programme depends on this discussion...

StandUpStraight · 29/09/2020 09:58

WH can fuck off with their “two women” bullshit. It isn’t even necessary to use the word in that context. You can just say “two campaigners”. That’s a deliberate decision right there and it’s just gaslighting.

Emma Barnett's been doing Late Night Woman's Hour for a while. But Jane Garvey's doing tomorrow, no?

Sorry, I was just referring to the fact that Emma Barnett's going to be taking over as presenter after Jane Garvey and Jenni Murray have both left (maybe in January?) - I didn't mean she's presenting this week.

AmericanSlang · 29/09/2020 09:40

I cannot believe they chose to put Heather Peto on, the Heather Peto who stole a woman's place on an all woman's shortlist, who hounded Rosie Duffield for stating biological facts. I am not tuning in to a programme supposedly dedicated to women's issues, which calls Heather Peto a woman

FindTheTruth · 29/09/2020 08:48

Bingo...

Heather - Liz Truss claimed what trans people asked for most in the consultation is better health care. However there was no question in the consultation on healthcare

Nicola - They're demanding women’s sexed-based rights, so women’s views needed to be heard on GRA reform

Kit19 · 29/09/2020 08:47

is there any BBC guidance that says a TW should not be described as a TW?

testing987654321 · 29/09/2020 08:43

Okay, that's definitely got to be worth a letter of complaint. The idea that a programme specifically about women is gaslighting people into thinking a man is a woman is outrageous.

FindTheTruth · 29/09/2020 08:40

Play Bingo? I'll start

Heather Peto 'Liz Truss misled the Consultation results'

Nicola Williams 'Liz Truss's job is to balance the rights of different groups.'

NotAnotherFeckingMuftiDay · 29/09/2020 08:36

I do think radio is a great medium for this sort of discussion.

You can really listen to the voices of the interviewees without the visual distractions of a TV interview.

Kit19 · 29/09/2020 08:29

Oh so much!! Honestly the fact that someone born male is described as a woman makes me want to scream

Still on the plus side, dr nic is fabulous & lots of sunlight on dr Heather’s being a woman’s officer & taking a place on the jo cox leadership programme for women

ThinEndOfTheWedge · 29/09/2020 08:26

Jane Garvey hears from two of the women who’ve been campaigning on this issue, Dr Heather Peto...and Dr Nicola Willliams

Not a good start. Anyone notice a glaring error here?

FindTheTruth · 29/09/2020 08:24

Description: The government has announced it will not go ahead with a change to the Gender Recognition Act which would have allowed trans men and women to self identify rather than go through a medical diagnosis to change their gender. The Equalities and Human Rights Commission has said it was a ‘missed opportunity’ but women's rights groups have applauded the decision as a ‘victory for fairness and common sense’. Jane Garvey hears from two of the women who’ve been campaigning on this issue, Dr Heather Peto who is Co-Chair of Labour’s LGBT+ group and Dr Nicola Williams from the group Fair Play for Women.

Apparently Shon Faye refused to appear on the grounds that a) FPFW was transphobic and b) they'd been persistently misgendered. Seems reasonable. Can't imagine there's any other reason why Shon won'y debate...

Jenni Murray needs her own show.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 28/09/2020 23:28

I hope they have James Morton on with Nic.

PigeonToe · 28/09/2020 21:25

I'm glad that Emma Barnett will be taking over. I don't think she'll have much patience for wokery. And a new presenter could give the opportunity for a fresh start to their coverage of this entire thing... I mean, if there isn't a fresh start, the programme is all but doomed, isn't it.

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 28/09/2020 21:18

Didn’t Sarah Sands say a lot of the staff are woke? She was on Today, but presumably it’s similar on WH.

PigeonToe · 28/09/2020 21:13

It's painfully obvious that the WH team spend at least three days wringing their hands before making any decision every time anything to do with gender identity is in the news. Any time that any other women's issue hits the headlines, Woman's Hour responds to it right away, but this issue is apparently impossible for them. I can only conclude that the office must be full of wide-eyed young people who think everyone should just be nice. Where are all the battle-hardened old feminist radio producers when you need them?!
