"But for all that the Scottish government is relaxed about drawing distinctions between Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom it wishes to be no part of, is it really prepared to insist that “woman” has one meaning in Carlisle but quite another in Dumfries?"

Good question, Alex.

Vetting isn't really an issue if you're one of the leadership's golden boys or girls. This is true of all parties.

HirplesWithHaggis · 27/09/2020 15:40

I will be very surprised if Ms Spear is selected, but then I'm quite surprised she passed vetting. Pressure from on high? But her lies are what has set this alight, not Ms Sturgeon's defence. That just added fuel.

nauticant · 27/09/2020 15:29

I'm rather irritated at The Sunday Times. Someone had commented about trans activists having influence and I replied simply linking to the Dentons report* and quoting one part of the document. Nothing more. My reply was deleted.

BlackForestCake · 27/09/2020 14:44

Sturgeon said nothing when two SNP MPs and the most prominent Scottish author in the world were getting rape and death threats.

Dances · 27/09/2020 13:48

Nicola Sturgeon has clearly picked her side in the trans debate. Rhiannon Spears is dogmatic in her TWAW mantra and 'sex work' is the same as having a job at Asda bollocks.

Also worth pointing out that Rhiannon Spear is the WOMEN'S Convenor. Yes, at least she is a woman in that role but she speaks out about the interests of men not women

It is war in snp at moment. It is needed.

Wonder why first minister started it. Was her tweets about spear that seemed to start it off.

Her defence of spear

a shout out to Jo Marsh in the comments in the Times who is doing sterling work! All the comments seem extraordianrily sensible... do TRA's sleep in on a sunday?

FannyCann · 27/09/2020 12:54

Well, at the risk of being blunt, just as wearing a kilt does not make you a Scot even if you think it does, so a man in a dress is not transformed into a woman simply by his choice of clothing.

"It's about time that the umbrella under which cross dressers expect to be called women, was publicised. It rarely, if ever, gets mentioned."

Anyone heard from Philip Bunce recently?

Alex Massie will be watching with the popcorn, of course

Full scale war going on within the SNP now. Rhiannon Spear in one corner, with her TWAW and supporting the right to have a career as a prostitute. Said she founded Gen Yes and the actual founder was slightly miffed. Has now resigned from the party.

were called Jeremy hunts

Regardless of who were the targets or the legitimacy or otherwise of the grievance against them and Mr Hunt, using an MPs name as rhyming slang for an insult is in my view totally unacceptable behaviour by another MP.

BettyFilous · 27/09/2020 12:04

It’s a superbly clear article which lays out the issues for the unitiated. Excellent job Alex.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 27/09/2020 11:55

That’s excellent & that GI quote is an excellent inclusion for all the people who still don’t understand exactly who NS thinks should share a changing room with my daughters Angry

This nails it “The “compromise” requires their capitulation and so is no kind of compromise at all.“

BovaryX · 27/09/2020 11:54

We women were called Jeremy hunts In Scotland just for having worries about the GRA

It's just appalling. I don't understand how anyone thinks that is acceptable behaviour. Thank you for the Twitter link.

But after first ministers tweet last night about Rhiannon Spear.

The snp supporters have been pointing out that she didn’t support other women.

Really has kicked off now and good to see so many pointing this out to first minister and snp party mps and MSps

Wow, it's just incredible that anyone thinks that kind of abuse is acceptable. So much of what has been happening is so regressive and as many posters have said, it's carte blanche for virulent abuse from woke misogynists.

littlbrowndog · 27/09/2020 11:29

Woke politics.

Government funded organisations

Same as ever

littlebrown

I don't know much about politics in Scotland, but I don't understand how this insanity has taken root there. How and why has it happened?

littlbrowndog · 27/09/2020 11:22

See Nicola was calling out today the abuse that snp candiate Rhiannon Spear
Was receiving.

She never once defended Joanna Cherry or Joanna Rowling

Aesopfable · 27/09/2020 11:19

The first minister has argued that once the issues are explained and properly understood, her opponents will appreciate they are mistaken.

That comment should surely bring the validity of their consultation into question. A consultation is not legally a valid consultation if the decision is already made.
