This is a harrowing read.
I feel immensely sorry for the child that was. However I feel more frightened for the women and children G might be incarcerated with.

I just watched the interview on player. As I suspected, not a mention of them joining in on the pile on for JKR. I always liked the way Ryan promoted book reading, I never would have thought he condoned book burning. Silence is compliance. 😠

Runnersos · 29/09/2020 14:04

*passengers not passion!!!
Autocorrect gone wild😂

Runnersos · 29/09/2020 14:02

@purplepizzabunny

All the coverage of the Jedward interview I've seen mentioned their mother's death so I think it was quite a softly softly "ah you're a lovely pair of lads" bolloXology.
Yes. It seemed like a PR love in for Jedward. I must check on rte player to see if Ryan brought it up. They had only tweeted about the book burning the week before, so I would be very annoyed if Ryan, who is always a big promoter of book reading, let them off on that one. This morning, when he was going through the newspapers at the start of the programme, he mentioned an airline that, instead of saying "Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome on board" say "Humans, welcome on board". Ryan then briefly mentioned that we all need to get used to rebooting our language to gender neutral. (I did wonder why the airline couldn't simply say"We would like to welcome our passion board" but I presume that wouldn't have highlighted their wokeness credentials) I didn't listen to the rest of the programme but I doubt if RTE would mention if anyone had rang in.

I don't know if its that they can't see it or they support it. Having seen the changes that have gone on here, I'd say you cant let your guard down for a minute.

SecondRow · 29/09/2020 13:06

Please tell us someone rang in to put Ryan right? This is the thing TheInebriati, I really don't want to be giving organisations like AIMS and Abortion Rights a hard time but if they genuinely don't see where erasing women is going Confused

CoolYourBeansMySon · 29/09/2020 13:03

Barbie Kardashian was due back in court today. Has anyone seen any updates?

Thelnebriati · 29/09/2020 12:52

I really hate being made to feel suspicious of change and forced to use 'thin end of the wedge' thinking; but I've never seen another movement like this.

Runnersos · 29/09/2020 09:29

@notyourhandmaid

The legislation was not 'self-ID', it was 'can we amend the law so that a tiny group of people, like Lydia Foy, who'd undergone full surgery and had been living as a woman for 20+ years and had their passport etc as 'female' can have their gender recognised in all legal documents, and also the EU have told us we have to'.

And then any safeguards - presented as difficulties for trans people, and therefore obstacles to be removed without thinking about anyone else - were torn away from it.

So, this was originally intended as a way to allow people like Lydia Foy, who simply wanted to live her life with dignity. Now we have a law that facilitates the life choices of anyone, for any reason, without any thoughts on the impact to wider society. It is very obvious, looking at the law that women and children weren't even considered. To make it worse, women aren't even protected under the equality law, just gender. So Barbie Kardashian, has exactly the same rights as I have , as a woman. It is very sickening. As an aside, I am listening to Ryan Turbidy on the radio and he it sounds as if he is all for "rebooting " our language to gender neutral. I didn't see the late late show last week but does anyone know if he quizzed Jedward on their book burning tweet. I would have expected him to but can't see it mentioned online.

BatShite · 28/09/2020 22:35

I don’t think the legislation envisaged the ability of transgender people to be able to self-declare;

What the bloody hell did they think selfID was in that case?! This seems a weird 'we did;t know it meant that!!!'

and it didn’t foresee the problems it would cause if a transgender, self-declared person was held in a mixed prison

Because noone even slightly thought about the implications. As it would only be women who were affected, no biggie eh?

peanut2017 · 28/09/2020 21:34

@Custardcream1244 thanks for that wording. Just checking though should we not be referring to sex instead of gender?

Runnersos · 28/09/2020 20:53

There are some amazing posters on here. I will use those emails as a guide. I think they cover everything, is there anything else that needs to be added?

3timeslucky · 28/09/2020 20:16

This site is becoming very helpful in getting me to commit to putting pen to paper and then doing it. Earlier in the month it was the HSE, so this week's job is to write to McEntee (at the very least).

It was great to see that SalWicklow has got a response from the HSE undertaking a review of their language. Onwards and upwards!

Glinnerisgreat · 28/09/2020 20:15

Have you noticed this is only ever discussed on the "right wing" programmes - never by the woke broadcasters such as Sean Moncrieff or any women broadcasters in Ireland.

StephanieRang · 28/09/2020 20:02

I put this on the JKR letter thread but I thought you guys would be interested. Discussion on newstalk this afternoon about the pile on of JKR. This stuff is rarely discussed on irish radio so big thanks to Stella:

Here's what I wrote - slightly modified from the post from Custard

Dear

I am contacting you, as a female representative of the Dail, which has been underrepresented by women, to the detriment of women, since the foundation of the state.

As you are aware, the Gender Recognition Act of 2015 was brought in to allow people, who identified as the opposite gender to their biology, to change their gender, in a manner which removed the need for a medical diagnosis. Worryingly, there is no requirement on an applicant, to have taken, or plan to take, any hormonal therapy or surgery. It also appears to be a system based entirely on trust and on the principles of the Yogyakarta Principles, which, I have been advised, have no legal basis.

Given the potential impact on women, and girls, in areas such as single sex spaces, which are provided for safety, I would like to enquire what risk assessments were done when this legislation was implemented? Were any Women's rights groups involved in the planning of the legislation? Would you be able to access under FOI, the report into the impact on Women's prisons; Women's refuges; Rape Crisis centres;

As those with a GRA certificate are legally women ( even if biologically unchanged), what safeguarding measures are in place to ensure girls are not placed at risk of sexual predators who may use this legislation to their advantage?

I would also wish to draw your attention to the worrying cases, already in the media, of Barbie Kardashian, and of a sex offender with multiple convictions, currently housed in Limerick prison, both of whom obtained GRA certificates on the basis of simply identifying as women. Who is advocating for the rights of the women in the prison - the women who come from the most disadvantaged sectors of society and are already disadvantaged, now housed in a prison with male bodied inmates.

As there are plans in the programme for government to expand legislation to under 18s, what measures are in place to prevent biological males participating in women's sport, to the detriment of girls and women. What measures are in place to ensure that girls are not put in a position in schools of sharing changing rooms, or toilets with biological males? I noted that the new Educate Together second level school in Dublin North has determined, without parental input, to only have gender neutral toilets. What safeguards have been put in place in the education sector for teenage girls who are having their period or other female related hygiene issues?

I would also appreciate your opinion on the decision of the HSE to remove the word woman from its cervical screening website. Given that research has shown 40% of women are unaware they have a cervix this would appear to put marginalised women, with poor literacy skills, or with English as a second language, at greater risk. From the HSE website:

"Every year in Ireland about 300 people get cervical cancer. 90 women die from it. In women aged 25 to 39 years, cervical cancer is the second most common cause of death due to cancer"

And yet, there was no cause for concern that these women would be discouraged or even upset by the wording used in the HSE communication to encourage women to access cervical health screening. I wish to point out that Transmen are well catered for, and in no way excluded, on the same website.

ReiltinDubh · 28/09/2020 17:42

I would definitely be up for emailing TDs on this, i am absolutely woeful when it comes to getting thoughts down on paper so if we had a template that would be great Blush

Glinnerisgreat · 28/09/2020 17:13

@purplepizzabunny

I know I sound like a broken record, but I am checking the CRO daily and the 2018 accounts are still not filed. They were due a year ago. CRO can start strike off proceedings if annual returns are more than 12 months later. There has to be something serious brewing.
@purplepizzabunny - we could end up taking the whole house of cards down on a technicality, a bit like how they got Al Capone Grin
Glinnerisgreat · 28/09/2020 17:12

I have emailed all the TD's - will be interesting to see replies (I better have my Rescue Remedy beside me when I open them!!).

I have name changed and am already on this topic on a different name that I always use, but I posted the note about my letter to all TD's as this name so that hopefully they cannot see my usual posts on Style/AIBU and Housekeeping Grin.

I think we should all get every woman we know to email their TDs about this - does anyone else think we can organise a campaign around this issue?

PopcornAndWine · 28/09/2020 16:46

@Custardcream1244 Great email! I really can't email TDs as my job is in public policy so have to be very careful of any activity like that outside work. And I have a pretty unusual name IRL. But great to see others doing so!

Another article.... The coverage is growing :

www.theburkean.ie/articles/2020/09/27/barbie-kardashian-how-a-homicidal-transgender-woman-was-almost-released-to-public

Note this bit:

Since 2015, the Republic of Ireland endures what is the potentially the world’s most liberal transgender regime, with the country having a hawkish transgender lobby in the form of TENI Ireland. As mentioned before in this publication, TENI has enjoyed favourable coverage from the mainstream press, as well as funds from the Social Innovation Fund Ireland, aka Rethink Ireland, in partnership with Bank of America.

Aine82 · 28/09/2020 15:07

Thanks Custard.

Agreed EarlofEggMcMuffin, it is extremely concerning, but people are going to push back when this hits the mainstream. Irish people simply do not know about these matters!
