Labour continuing to support self-declaration

Apologies if this has already been mentioned but the official Labour Twitter account tweeted this earlier today:
It is deeply disappointing that the government has let trans people down and dropped its plans to reform the Gender Recognition Act.
Labour is committed to equality and we continue to support updating the GRA to introduce self-declaration for trans people.

Necessary - thank you! Maybe the SDP is the way to go.

@RadandMad

Most people on the left now are high on their own sense of virtue. They're not going to abandon it very readily. And I speak as someone who voted Labour her whole life. Come the next election, though, if the Tories are the only party sticking up for women, I shall hold my nose and tick that Conservative box.
Me too. Again!
nonsenceagain · 25/09/2020 23:54

I'm desperately sad about this as I have campaigned for, donated to and paid dues to the Labour Party for years. I won't vote for them if they maintain this policy, but I think there's a chance they'll row back from it. Not because they care about women, but because their polling on this issue will force them to. The Tories have a massive majority and every vote will count in the next GE, especially in the seats they will target.

Vargas · 25/09/2020 23:37

I have never voted for any party but Labour, but they will never have my vote again if they continue down this path. And the Lib Dems can get stuffed. It’s so sad that there’s no one left for us to vote for...

teawamutu · 25/09/2020 23:36

@PurpleHoodie

No transgender person is excluded from single-sex/sex specific services.
True. Maybe from the ones they'd prefer to use, but that's not nec the same thing.
PurpleHoodie · 25/09/2020 23:34

Not one.

Labour still seem unable to differentiate between their loud ‘activists’ and their voters

What TheRealMcKenna said.

Such a good point.
BatShite · 25/09/2020 23:28

Transgender people mustn't be excluded from separate or single sex services provided to people of their acquired gender, unless there's a good enough reason.

Stuff like this is starting to seriously piss me off too. Acknowledging that these areas are single SEX, yet whining that people of another 'gender' cannot use them Hmm

BatShite · 25/09/2020 23:26

Lifelong labour voter, and will NOT vote for them while they appear to be intent on destroying the rights of women. Even if I agreed with everything else they said (which I don't)..womens rights are too high a cost IMO.

This ‘most people on left’ is a sweeping statement and is full of contempt. It’s not how you will invite people to listen to you.
TheRealMcKenna · 25/09/2020 23:06

Labour still seem unable to differentiate between their loud ‘activists’ and their voters. Traditional and ‘lifelong’ voters may swing left on economics, but do not necessarily buy into identity politics.

I remember having a bit argument with my BIL just before the Labour Party conference in 2018. He was desperately hoping that the party would adopt a ‘people’s vote’ policy as that was what Labour members overwhelmingly wanted. I tried to point out that Labour voters generally supported Leave but he just didn’t get it. He genuinely thought Leave was purely a tory/UKIP position. I said that I thought adopting a ‘second referendum’ position was political suicide and I was right (I should have got it in writing).

Labour have just abandoned their working class but (in relative terms) socially conservative voter base. They represent a large proportion of the ‘silent majority’ or ‘low information voters’ who just don’t concern themselves with this type of bullshit. Until they accept that there is a UK that is not in Islington/Hackney/Brent/NUS, they will remain out of power.

@Lordamighty

The Tories are going to hit Labour with this at the next GE like a cricket bat to the head. If Keir Starmer thinks he can carry on ignoring this issue then he is massively underestimating the strength of feeling amongst the general public. I live in the red wall area, no one, absolutely fucking no one thinks TWAW.
This. ^ I hope Keir Starmer has the courage and leadership skills to actually act on this. I say ‘act on this’ because I am nearly 100% sure he fully understands the situation but is silent for some reason. It could be that he is waiting for the court cases or it could be that the woke and young voters are their hope at the moment. Either way, it will be a mistake to hand this to Tories.
SerenityNowwwww · 25/09/2020 22:29

It’s too late - they are either bloody fools or pathetic idiots who are running after ‘the yoof votes’ - either way, lairs or fools.

BlueBrush · 25/09/2020 22:22

@ArranBound

This was the reason I resigned my membership again. I won't vote for Labour, let along rejoin the party, until this has been dropped. I've seen loads of people on the Twitter thread stating pretty much the same. After Keir Starmer was talking about drawing people back to Labour, I hope he's actually listening.
I just read some of the comments, and blimey you're not wrong. Loads of people perplexed at why Labour aren't listening. I was feeling quite depressed about this, but reading those comments has made me feel ever so slightly better. What do we do to get Labour to listen?!

EwwSprouts · 25/09/2020 20:31

They might change their minds when all the court cases have come to fruition. How craven is that from a former director of public prosecutions?

Tootsweets23 on p3 is spot on.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 25/09/2020 20:05

@NecessaryScene1

If anyone within Labour wanted to splinter off and form a new left-wing party which supported women’s rights and had stable, far-seeing tenets to their ideology - yeah that would be good. They’d get a lot of support.

Reposting - again I'm not a member, and don't think I've voted for them before, but the SDP came out well on this and are not getting credit:

sdp.org.uk/policies/transgender-and-biological-sex-based-rights/

Come on, folks, let's at least acknowledge them. Sure, they got 2-digit votes in my constituency last time, but better than starting from scratch surely?

Interesting, I'll read more about them. Thank you.

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 25/09/2020 19:56

I am really shocked by this. I don't post here very often - I'm not directly affected by trans issues on a day to day basis, but I've been reading a lot and for Labour to make such a strong statements (there have been others right?) really surprises me. I have always voted labour (or green), but this really makes me think twice.

ArabellaScott · 25/09/2020 19:45

Absolutely. The child has pointed out the naked emperor and to continue to try to maintain the pretence now is just risible.

My son is a millennial ( just) . The other evening he was telling me about a conversation he had had with a friend. They are both interested in politics. They both admitted that as early 20 yr old men they had not realised what the likes of Germaine Greer and many many others had had to go through in earlier waves of feminism. And he talks to me. They are both now huge fans of Germaine Greer by the by and absolutely anti self ID. So , meticulously researched , based on a sample of two Wink - but at least two millennials who do not agree with the wholesale - you are transphobic if you do not agree with Self ID. He also said he had read something from the Tavistock Clinic which he thought sensible - Society is moving faster than the evidence ( sorry if that has been posted before - I am sure it has )

JamieLeeCurtains · 25/09/2020 18:57

I don't think linking to an article that basically says "If there is a good enough reason a transgender person without a GRC can be excluded from a single sex space" is the killer argument Olivia Blake thinks.

Indeed.
