If I found myself arguing the case for public child nudity, against people concerned about safety and abuse, well,

I’d be having a long hard think about my life

Pelleas · 27/09/2020 14:45

OK - so would you support a law that said no child under 16 should ever be left in the care of an adult who is not their parent?

Because statistically, abuse is far more likely to occur in that situation than it is at a chaperoned naturist event.

DidoLamenting · 27/09/2020 14:35

@Pelleas

You don't seem able to make your minds up - are you saying children should or should not be able to make the decision for themselves?
I don't think children should be making their minds up that they can be naked in public in front of strangers and I don't think parents should be deciding that their children should be naked in public in front of strangers.

Pelleas

It's your rebuttal of the analogy which makes no sense. You completely ignore the fact that adults are deciding their children should be naked in front of strangers.

Pelleas · 27/09/2020 13:59

@PullTheBricksDown

Let's try an analogy. The UK age of consent to sex is 16. While under-16s do have sex, we consider that they aren't able to make a competent, informed decision about doing so before that age, and we - as a society - are particularly concerned where that happens with an age gap. In other words, it would be illegal for any under 16 to have sex but more likely for action to be taken if it's with a 30 year old than with, say, another 15 year old.

Given all that, do we feel that under 16s are competent to decide they want to take their clothes off in a large mixed group of people? Or would we say that might be a decision where they might feel pressured and coerced? And how would the fact that the group will contain adults much older than them, rather than being a group of their peers, affect that too?

Your analogy doesn't really make sense.

There is no 'age of consent' for nudity in the UK.

Unaccompanied children are not allowed at official naturism events, so no one is suggesting they are competent to make this decision by themselves - they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

If I am a prude for safeguarding kids. Then will be a prude with and proud of it

And to say that being a prude is harmful and pornography is not harmful

MandosHatHair · 27/09/2020 13:06

I honestly think that if an adult strips off in a room with other adults and kids in, knowing that a child could be present who does not want to be there, then they are complicit in child abuse

VortexofBloggery · 27/09/2020 13:01

littlebrowndog at least they admit child protection and Naturism are at odds. Disturbing reading.
@SterFran00 you came into Naturism as an adult and as an adult you made that choice, you were not subjected to this as a child/teenager and therefore have not experienced the first hand accounts from myself and others here which I hope will make you re evaluate your choices. I’m sorry but whatever you come back to justify your actions will not change my mind about how much I feel sorry for your kids.
I understand that, and please understand I’m not at all trying to change your mind, and how you feel is completely valid and appropriate because of your experience.

I’m not going to attempt to justify anything, that would not be helpful or respectful to you.

Did I just read this from that document. Heck. See below

British Naturism should not need to be concerned with pornography but unfortunately measures ostensibly to protect children are having a considerable adverse impact on both the welfare of children and on Naturism. Overly broad definitions, simplistic definitions, inadequate consideration of indirect effects, and worse, are all acting to make achieving improved outcomes more difficult.
In general the quality of the supposed evidence is very poor. Research for the Children's Commissioner classified less than 1% of available studies as reliable.89 It was unable to find a causal relationship between pornography and harm. Conversely the connection between prudery and harm is well established. See 4.3 Prudery above.
13 Conclusions
The prudification of society is a serious and growing problem. It denies children essential knowledge and skills which leads to greater sexualisation, objectification, and violence.

Clymene · 27/09/2020 12:01

How old are your children @SterFran00? Do you think they'd feel able to tell you they didn't want to be naked around naked strangers any more?

MandosHatHair · 27/09/2020 11:59

It’s entirely possible it is happening within a naturist family somewhere

Yet you are still happy to strip off, knowing a child in this situation could be present. Oh well, don't let an abused child get in the way of your special sensory experience.

DarkmilkAddict · 27/09/2020 11:59

WTF?? Ok I’m off. Anyone else who was traumatised by this feel free to message me

Pelleas · 27/09/2020 11:56

@DarkmilkAddict

I’ve suppressed my feelings about this for a long time. I’m now thinking it’s child abuse, and seriously considering at least setting up a support group.

Does anyone know about the origins of naturism? I’m finding it all a bit much tbh but I did google a few years ago and think it emerged from the free love/druggy movement

Naturism has a much longer history than that. Leaving aside its place in ancient Greek and Roman culture, the first 'modern' naturist resorts were established around the 1900s.

Bathing routinely took place in the nude until the Victorians invented the swimming costume.
