They are the gift that keeps on giving 😆 they will never be near national government again but they tend to go better in local elections so if you get/have a LD council

just to point out, their latest polling is 6% (not sure which poll and they all say something different) surely this might be an indicator of how much the electorate value the Lib Dem route to success Grin

Or are they trying to lure the Momentum crowd from Labour. Whoopee, might even be able to vote labour again some day

I am so sad that a long established party has come to this

Using phrases or language to describe trans people which are designed to suggest that trans people are a separate category of person from the gender they identify as or that their gender identity is not valid. Current examples include referring to a trans woman or non-binary person as a “biological man” or a trans man or non-binary person as a “biological woman”, which eradicates the trans person’s gender identity in favour of their biology at birth.

As others have pointed out, the above is a really bad idea if the trans person needs healthcare as in the article below, where a trans man nearly died due to kidney failure as his healthcare team thought he was a man and were interpreting his test results at men's levels:

@SerenityNowwwww

My theory is that they are trying to tank the party.

Perhaps they want to crash and burn so they can just start again.

Certainly seems that way

I won’t vote for them, dh won’t either and they’ve obviously Wound ds1 up as well cos he didnt vote for them last time either...and he’s a member (until he gets his arse in gear and cancels)

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 19/09/2020 22:41

There are about three women murdered every week in the UK. Week in, week out. I can imagine what frothing the Lib Dems would do if there were three dead trans women in a year.

It's fucking disgusting. Women don't matter.

JamieLeeCurtains · 19/09/2020 22:31

Gawd, the Lib Dems are such a fucking joke.

ListeningQuietly · 19/09/2020 22:25

Biology just IS
What you wear is a choice
you should not be discriminated against because of what you wear
but Biology just IS

'Knowingly promoting the idea that gender dysphoria is a form of, or is caused by, mental illness...

...Advocating the withdrawal or defunding of access to transition-related medical treatment for trans people.'

So gender dysphoria isn't a mental illness or caused by mental illness, yet it is imperative that trans people access medical treatment.

If it's not a mental illness nor caused by a mental illness, then why on earth does anyone need to access treatment for it? Wouldn't it then be classed in a similar way to any other change of appearance, plastic surgery, etc?

Or if you can’t distinguish the difference between trans and other people, do we have to provide procedures to everyone? Breast implants to anyone that wanted to appear more feminine.

I’m embarrassed to have ever voted Libdem. This is what happens when you only listen to one view. I bet they’re all patting themselves on the back about how right they’ve got this.

littlbrowndog · 19/09/2020 21:23

Didn5 understand a word of their policy. Like most of the rest of the country.

Just blah blah.

Did they have any policies on women tha5 they have spent months having anguish about at all ?

NellieEllie · 19/09/2020 21:18

They seem to consider any meetings that are single sex- based - eg women’s meetings will have to include trans women “systematically excluding trans people from discussions about issues that directly affect them.” or be labelled trans phobic. And any attempt to properly assess children with gender dysphoria instead of merely affirming them on the path of artificial hormone and surgery will be transphobic - “advocating or facilitating any kind of therapy that tries to change a person’s gender identity”.
Of course the question then remains - given they have defined “transphobia”, what is their policy to those “guilty” of “transphobia”? Criminalisation?

This needs to be shared far and wide. It is beyond abhorrent and bizarre that a major political party has decided to shelve biological reality, to describe stating the truth as “hate speech”, and to abandon safeguarding for women and children. Long may this haunt them.

OhHolyJesus · 19/09/2020 21:11

That was really long. Why use ten words to explain something when you can use 1,000.

Also, it was a load of bollocks.

X & Y chromosomes. Everything else is cosmetic in a literal and metaphorical sense.

GoodyWoolf · 19/09/2020 21:00

I have a LibDem MP so will write to them this week to object to this - thank youfor all the comments so far, they will help me to write something more persuasive than I could have done on my own.

AlsoNotAGirl · 19/09/2020 20:49

@LotusRipple

Maybe now is the time to drop the word ‘liberal’ from their name.
And 'Democrat'
TBHno · 19/09/2020 20:47

I have a theory:

The Lib Dems are still teamed up with the Torys. Their current task is to destroy the left from within.

TorkTorkBam · 19/09/2020 20:30

Please could someone explain the logic of this to me, because I really don't understand.

The Libdems have made a policy which reads like the rules of misogyny. I don't know why, maybe now they make policy purely based on focus groups where the only focus group was Twitter in 2019.

You don't have to understand. Your role is to agree and apologise for any mistakes you make.

TorkTorkBam · 19/09/2020 20:19

I hope they are on the tv and radio soon being quizzed hard on this.

EdgeOfACoin · 19/09/2020 20:15

Trans people are not required to have undergone any medical or social transition to be considered trans. Other examples are set out in the Stonewall Glossary.

So - no difference between a trans and a non-trans person, then?

Yet a woman questioning the presence of a masculine-presenting, male-bodied person in a female-only space would be transphobic?

Please could someone explain the logic of this to me, because I really don't understand.

They have lost the plot.

What, so like trans man or trans woman then?
CharlieParley · 19/09/2020 19:15

That should read

(especially for children, where it heavily focuses on psychological treatment.)

CharlieParley · 19/09/2020 19:13

How can believing yourself to actually be of the opposite sex despite the physical evidence of your body not be some kind of mental disorder? And I can't think of anything else which is not a disorder of some kind that requires surgery and hormone treatment.

Well, quite. And the NHS page on the treatment of gender dysphoria heavily features psychological treatment as one option (especially for children, where it . Now of course that happens with other illnesses that may cause mental health issues, but I cannot think of any other issue but mental health ones where the only clinical specialists mentioned as members of a patient's team are those treating mental health issues. (See screenshot of the NHS page in question.)

Lib Dem’s definition of transphobia
Aesopfable · 19/09/2020 17:04

There are LD members on twitter saying the wider membership wasn’t consulted

What? Neither of them? Shamd

The great thing about Nick Clegg's approach was the belief that you didn't actually have to like the people you did business with, you just had to do business with them, and realise that incremental gains are gains, while grandstanding is just grandstanding.

The current obsession with correctness in the LibDems has actually always been there (I've been voting Liberal since '79, and I've seen it - and the history of the Liberal Party has some beautifully weird ideas in it, including the nationalisation of all land!), but its manifestations rarely last long because they are so damn illiberal - purity of doctrine is totally illiberal.

If they don't like "biological woman", I'd settle for "biologically female" as a compromise. How about that?
