They are the gift that keeps on giving 😆 they will never be near national government again but they tend to go better in local elections so if you get/have a LD council

Legal critique of the Liberal Democrat definition of transphobia legalfeminist.org.uk/2020/09/24/transphobia-feminism-and-the-liberal-democrats/

... serving the LibDems a helpful definition of misogyny...

MoltenLasagne · 22/09/2020 16:27

So my impression from reading that is that Lib Dems think that transphobe means a non believer equivalent to infidel or heathen. They ought to be careful, they've captured at least 80% of the population in that definition.

NiceGerbil · 22/09/2020 11:39

Agree re the cut and paste of the IHRA definition.

That is really shocking. What the hell do they think they're playing at?

RoyalCorgi · 22/09/2020 09:14

It's as if we're all peasants being forced to rush down the river constructing one lovely Potemkin Village after another so the queen can admire the false prosperity of her reign.

I had never heard the phrase Potemkin Village before - how apt. (I love that this forum is so educational.)

Back to the definition of transphobia - I think taking the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism and doing a search-and-replace with transphobia is one of the most vile, nauseating things I have heard in a long time. The idea of equating the Jews, who have throughout history been subject to expulsions, pogroms, blood libels and ghettoisation, culminating in the planned genocide of 6 million by the Nazis, with the minor discomfort caused by people "misgendering" is absolutely abhorrent. They are beyond the pale.

@NiceGerbil

I had a long rant at DH about what does it take to get men caring about this.

He gave hopeless reasons while looking scared then went to bed...

@merrymouse

From the Spectator article, the Lib Dems copied the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of anti-Semitism.

That is wrong for reasons that go far beyond disagreement over changes to the the GRA. I think Ed Davey should issue an apology first thing on Monday morning. The definition of anti-semitism is not a cut and paste that can be applied to any group.

"Mindful of the long-standing trope about Jewish control of the media, the IHRA gives the following as an example of anti-Semitism:

‘Making mendacious, dehumanising, demonising, or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as collective — such as, especially but not exclusively, the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy or of Jews controlling the media, economy, government or other societal institutions.’

The Lib Dems give as an example of transphobia:

‘Making mendacious, dehumanising, demonising, or stereotypical allegations about trans people or their cisgender allies. This includes spreading the idea of a “trans conspiracy” which asserts undue influence over media or government or claiming that cisgender allies support trans rights initiatives out of fear or bribery rather than a genuine belief that trans rights are human rights.’"

Wow, that's difficult to believe.

@ListeningQuietly

I do not get the obsession re midgendering and dead naming.

The Transwoman I know is very open about their original name, its part of her identity.
I'd never not call that person "her" - because she had surgery decades ago and most people would not guess quickly
but the fact that she used to be he is just a fact.

I have wondered about that, too, because misgendering and dead naming are grounds for banning on Twitter, but I doubt anyone gets banned for life for calling women c**ts and so on. Different rules for different people?

Misgendering = correctly sexing.

Which is important for the safety, dignity, privacy and equity of access of woman and girls.

And we know the LDs don’t care about that.

Antibles · 20/09/2020 22:59

= ... “which eradicates the trans person’s fantasy in favour of reality.” Shorter, clearer and correct

Love this Grin

Misgendering = correctly sexing.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 20/09/2020 19:37

“Current examples include referring to a trans woman or non-binary person as a “biological man” or a trans man or non-binary person as a “biological woman”, which eradicates the trans person’s gender identity in favour of their biology at birth.“

= ... “which eradicates the trans person’s fantasy in favour of reality.” Shorter, clearer and correct.

I didn't notice they had ripped off the IHRA. That really is grim.

testing987654321 · 20/09/2020 19:28

Do they have a definition of misogyny/sexism?

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet but there's an article in the Spectator about this: www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-lib-dems-transphobia-meltdown-is-complete

Nicely summed up by the first sentence:
The trouble with women is that they have opinions and not necessarily the correct ones.

I also like this:
The Liberal Democrats say their list of transphobic behaviours is ‘not exhaustive’. No doubt, but it is exhausting.

merrymouse · 20/09/2020 13:35

systematically excluding trans people from discussions about issues that directly affect them

Presumably unless that trans person is called Debbie or Miranda, in which case cover their mouths quickly!

merrymouse · 20/09/2020 13:33

@PronounssheRa

They haven't thought this through have they?

They have, they just don't care about women. Ed Davey said not long ago that he disagreed with women's concerns about men who identify as women and who still have full male genitalia being placed in women's prisons or having access to womens changing rooms. This is entirely in keeping with that. They think penises should be allowed anywhere they want to go.

The question is why do the LDs want to breakdown safeguarding in such a significant way and who is behind it. It's sinister as hell and I don't trust them.

Fortunately they are never going to see power.

Nothing particularly unusual about a politician not caring about women, but they also haven't noticed how their policies affect the people they are purporting to help.

If gender dysphoria isn't a mental illness, how do you fund treatment of people who experience it as a mental illness, even after transition? People are referred to GIDS because of gender dysphoria, but many don't transition - do these people not suffer from gender dysphoria? Is somebody who de-transitions immediately cured?

Its medically illiterate, incompetent and grossly irresponsible.

The document talks about 'allies', but really couldn't give a f**k about trans people who don't toe the party line.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 20/09/2020 13:11

They seem to consider any meetings that are single sex- based - eg women’s meetings will have to include trans women “systematically excluding trans people from discussions about issues that directly affect them.” or be labelled trans phobic.

The irony of course is that the LibDems are being transphobic here - as well as being utterly misogynistic not a surprise

If it’s a women’s meeting - then excluding transmen - other adult human females - on the basis that they are trans IS transphobic. This is excluding TM from issues - as adult human females - which directly affect them. The LibDems are ok with this.

Excluding transwomen is based on the fact that they are adult human males - exclusion is based on sex and not transgender status and TW don’t form part of the discussion about women’s issues as they are not affected by them. LibDems are not ok with this.

A bit like all women’s shortlists - TW allowed but TM not allowed - exclusion based on gender reassignment and therefore IS transphobic.

Gaslighting morons.

I will never vote for the LDs again.
