The awful trend on Twitter

Hi, I don't post often, but I've seen the awful twitter trend today in regard to J K Rowling, I just feel so scared and defeated about women's rights, why are more people not up in arms and defending us? I also fear for her and women's safety, as some of these TRA's seem really unhinged.

I was actually disappointed with Jedward. A few weeks ago, they confronted Rachel Riley for a tweet dismissing their career saying that they were anti bullying ambassadors. They should be consistent in their opposition to bullying and hate tweets.

Haven't read the whole thread. Have been aghast at the idiocy and sheer nastiness directed towards JKR on Twitter when I've looked in odd moments over the last couple of days.

Heartened to see today though that the US ACLU posted something which was quite obviously meant to accuse JKR of creating a climate where there was an epidemic of murderous violence directed against transgender people, and in response almost all of the replies I could see were saying 'Violence from men, not women' and 'What about violence against women, isn't that a civil liberties issue nowadays?' and putting their stats in context. It's possible I'm not seeing all the supportive responses because I appear to be on dozens of blocklists, but even so, it was good to see.

@Kit19

Amazon have had to suspend reviews on the book after a pile on of negative reviews and the guardian in their usual cuntish way have said that no one should judge a book on a single review but she’s a horrible transphobe so its her own fault really
The Guardian is despicable. Imagine their horror when they realised that they had published a warm, sympathetic review of the book that failed even to mention the terrible transphobia! (Perhaps because there wasn't any?)

So obviously the first reaction to the Twitter frenzy is not to commission an article about how terrible it is to be issuing death threats to a well-loved author for something she didn't even write but to publish something that attempts to have its cake and eat it. Alison Flood has read the book and acknowledges that the character isn't trans and there is just a a couple of passing references to him wearing his landlady's coat and a wig.

But no! There's a risk that Flood might look as if she's sticking up for Rowling. So then she backtracks by saying:

"Perhaps some will still consider this depiction transphobic, given Rowling’s rightly widely criticised views on trans people. It is, at best, an utterly tone-deaf decision to include an evil man who cross-dresses after months of pain among trans people and their allies."

Quite right. Wouldn't want to give any more pain to the people issuing death threats.

But then again, if the trans activists are right, that means the Guardian's rival, the Telegraph, must have got it right and we can't have that. So Flood concludes with:

"But there is also reason to be wary of any moral outrage stoked by the Telegraph, a paper that generally doesn’t shy away from publishing jeering at the 'woke crowd', or claims that children are “put at risk by transgender books”, or attacks on 'the trans lobby'. And we should also be wary of how one review has been reproduced without question by countless newspapers and websites, by journalists who have shown no indication of having read the book themselves."

What a pathetic, cowardly, craven piece of journalism. Heaven forbid she write a piece - such as James Kirkup wrote for the Times - pointing out the misogyny of the death threats to Rowling.

I don't know how Alison Flood lives with herself.

Oh, yeah, and as part of her recovery she is binge watching Harry Potter today. And dh and I are looking forward to reading the new Strike book. Which I preordered.
Love JKR. And I'm too old to be a fan of anyone.

SerenityNowwwww · 16/09/2020 08:07

The funniest tweet I saw was ‘Jedward discover fire’.

They don’t really do anything though so they? Don’t act, sing, tell jokes... just ‘not very bright twins’ .

Of course the joke would be if they were both PhDs and weren’t actually related...

bellinisurge · 16/09/2020 08:06

Had a long conversation with my poorly (but improving) teen dd last night. "What's all this with JKR?" She asked.
I politely explained as best I could about how there are times when sex differences are important. "Well, duh" she said. "Is that what they are getting all upset about? I thought she'd done something horrible ".
I explained that there were truly nasty people in the world who are prejudiced against anyone who dresses differently or who falls in love with their own sex. And these activists try and argue that JKR and people who think like she does are like that. I also explained about urging teens to get surgery and take drugs rather than work stuff out for themselves.
Dd gets it. Hope for the Gen Z of this world if not millennials and their kool aid.

I had assumed Jedward had found a sense of humour and were posting in parody. Apparently not. Oh well, it's given them another fifteen minutes of fame - I had no idea they were still going. When was their previous fifteen minutes? 20 years ago?

SerenityNowwwww · 16/09/2020 08:00

I used to have 3 books on the go at once - could remember plots and themes of them all too. Not I have problems remembering... what was I saying again?

Dad was a very fast reader too.

CaraDuneRedux · 16/09/2020 07:58

My DH couldn't believe how fast I could read when we first met and thought I was just skim reading the pages....so I got him to test me by asking detailed questions on the last book I'd "not properly" read - he's never questioned me again grin

I'm the same, for the same reasons. On my graduate training three of us were given a project - the two blokes opted for online research, I hit the library. We met up an hour later... "You've read a 50 page review article... you can't have in the time... she has - she's taken notes as well."

SerenityNowwwww · 16/09/2020 07:13

Of course. I can imagine the ninnies scream and bravely sharing up to a 50-something woman from behind their keyboards, but an actual (male) murderer... not so brave.

SunsetBeetch · 16/09/2020 07:04

From the KF site:

"They're angrier at JK Rowling than they are to real life serial killers who used to do it. Just saying."

Hangingbasketofdoom · 16/09/2020 07:03

Thank you for the Times share

caughtalightsneeze · 16/09/2020 06:58

I've never had any interest in these books until now but I think I'll buy them all, whether I ever get round to reading them or not.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 16/09/2020 06:41

Oh are the Robert Galbraith books good? I've never really paid any attention to them before but am almost at the end of my unread book supply - I'll order 'Cuckoo's Calling' to try!

DeRigueurMortis · 16/09/2020 00:27

@Ereshkigalangcleg

Having binge read it on my Kindle I can confirm that's the extent of it....

Wow! How long did it take you?

In total about 9/10 hours.

Confession - I'm a fast reader...it's a relic of my degree where I was expected to read and analyse 10 plus heavy books when there was a bun fight to get them from the Uni library. As such they were restricted to loans of only a few days per book.

You either learned to read fast or spend your student loan on your own copy at the expense of food and more importantly beer/cider.

My DH couldn't believe how fast I could read when we first met and thought I was just skim reading the pages....so I got him to test me by asking detailed questions on the last book I'd "not properly" read - he's never questioned me again Grin

The downside is that I have a house that is bulging at the seams with books (I don't watch much TV) given how quickly I go through them and had to finally give in and buy a Kindle simply because of space (and my kindle has over 300 books on it now Blush).

The thing is, the likes of Prick News, Paris Lees, Owen Jones etc are all going to have to read the book now before they publicly comment further to avoid looking like uninformed idiots. Brilliant!

I don't think looking like uninformed idiots has ever bothered them in the past. However...on this occasion it would be fantastic if they remained uninformed and then a good interviewer was set loose on them. Or even just a very dogged interviewer. Jeremy Paxman Vs Owen Jones. I'd buy tickets to that event.

littlbrowndog · 15/09/2020 22:47

I have only read Cuckoo's Calling, I really enjoyed it but I don't want to read Troubled Blood because I am also interested in Strike and Robins stories as well so I don't want to skip!

Absolutely don't skip!!!

They need to be read in order Smile
