Sorry for the daily fail link but has anyone seen this? Sanitary products for people who menstruate from Superdrug. What were they thinking?

@LateSummerGarden

For everyone’s sake I hope your kids aren’t LGBTQ+

That's ok, LGB people now what sex they are.

Most of the other letters don't deny biological reality.

Your fear is unfounded.

Just like your fear of trans people. Maybe think for one second that trans people know who exactly they are and instead of further pushing down a minority that by merely existing doesn’t push away any rights of us.
midgebabe · 05/09/2020 13:53

I get you now

SoManyActivities · 05/09/2020 13:51

I think it's probably about both transmen and transwomen.

Framing menstruation as something that only happens to women is not inclusive of transwomen because they never menstruate because... Well they are not women! And it's not inclusive of transmen because transmen are 'men who menstruate' - except they aren't. If they were actually men, they wouldn't have periods.

So I think it's both that have a problem with that awful word 'woman' being associated with periods.

I'm not sure why we don't ever see the word 'man' erased in the same way though (except obviously we all know really).

nepeta · 05/09/2020 13:45

@midgebabe

Nepta you appear to be saying that woman is a gender identity not a shorthand for adult human female

I find that offensive

I don't have a gender identity that is woman, if I did I would say it was male as a youngster and one binary now. I don't buy sanitary stuff or use the ladies because of my gender, it's because of my sex that I do that

Agreed, in principle. What I was trying to get at is the idea that socially we are required to have both a biological sex and a social gender. If that is the case (maybe it is not), then my social gender is very much based on the fact that my body is female. It derives from my biological sex, but I also critique the gendered expectations I am exposed to, given that gender roles are one of the ways women have been turned into second class citizens.

I don't know if that made my points any clearer. I was trying to use as much of the gender identity language as I could, to try to explain why 'inclusiveness' isn't really inclusive in this case, but excludes many women from the way gender is now defined in woke circles altogether.

@Quaagars

I don't think this is about transmen. It's about not pissing off transwomen who cant menstruate so don't want the word woman associated with a biological function of which they are incapable

Well, that's a load of speculative guff based on nothing but I can assume prejudice/hatred/ignorance/a mix of all three, take your pick.
It's being inclusive towards trans men, but hey, go ahead and ignore them and that fact if it makes you feel better/ validates your "it's all about the trans women!" narrative

The problem with being inclusive towards trans men is that it is based on the implicit assumption that everyone's gender identities are detached from the sex of their bodies. Then it indeed would be weird to mention 'women' in the context of menstruation and not the other genders (men and nonbinary) which also contain people who menstruate.

But I do not believe that the vast majority of those who reckon themselves to be women actually have such a detached female gender identity. Rather, that identity (or definition of one's gender) is very much based on the fact of living in a female body and how others react to us differently because of that body rather than a male one.

When that is the case, the kind of inclusiveness towards trans men actually means that all women who use the sex-based definition of their female gender just got that definition completely invalidated by being told that the female body is now gender-neutral.

This clash of interests is real, in my opinion, and a direct consequence of the re-purposing of 'woman' rather than the creation of some new terms for abstract gender identities that people might wish to have.

Soubriquet · 05/09/2020 13:05

Problem is @Quaagars it usually is all about TW.

You very rarely heard of a TM advocating for them to be in men’s spaces or other things associated with it

Quaagars · 05/09/2020 13:05

Trans women will not and can never menstruate as it requires a uterus which they do not have

Nobody, anywhere on here has said they can, what are you talking about?
It's about trans "men*
Inclusive towards trans men (biologically female, yes) but still trans men.
Why do people keep bringing up trans women? It's not even about them!
Are people deliberately confusing trans women (biologically male) with trans men (biologically female) or something or just genuinely don't know the difference?!

MillyMollyFarmer · 05/09/2020 12:54

I was trying to reply to a person who flat out denied trans people are valid.

I didn’t see that but I also don’t even get it.. denying people are ‘valid’. What does that even mean?

Soubriquet · 05/09/2020 12:47

If my dh suddenly started bleeding out of his anus or penis I would panic.

Men do not menstruate

Trans men but buy they are still biologically women so therefore without taking hormones would indeed menstruate

Trans women will not and can never menstruate as it requires a uterus which they do not have.

Yes I could relent and “let” them have this, but it’s all about giving them an inch and they will run a mile.

If it’s suddenly people who menstruate, it becomes those with a cervix when you need a smear test. It will become those with breasts when you need a breast screen.

It will become those with ovaries for any problems with the reproduction cycle.

It cannot and should not ever be done

Those sorts of comments on a parenting forum are so disgusting, and extremely homophobic. There are all kinds of people here, many belong to that community, and they have as varying opinions on social issues, including them or not, as straight people do.

Rather than insult people’s parenting, you should try growing up and engaging in the actual discussion, if you’re able to.

Sorry I tried to quote someone else but I replied to the OP post.

@StopGo

Why do so many products need to be sexed/gendered?

Can't they simply be menstruation, incontinence, shaving etc etc products?

Period products are inherently sexed. They're only needed because of the way our sexual reproductive systems work. Incontinence products are also sexed, I believe, because of the difference in where the urine leaks from. A surgically altered TW might need the version designed for females I suppose but so would a TM.

Shaving afaik is different only in that there may typically be some difference in which parts are shaved - a mix of sex and gender. Describing those by function 'facial' or not would be fine I'd have thought. Certainly no need for 'women's' razors to be pink.

Kit19 · 05/09/2020 11:40

Yes sadly serenity that has happened. Lauren harries posted this - it’s all so messed up! it’s another reason ppl cheerleading this is the name of kindness need to give their head a firm wobble

Don’t some buy the packs and pregnancy tests (and take the test and post hopeful messages)? And yes, I’ve seen some on twitter saying this. Experiences and all that.

My head hurts.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 05/09/2020 11:27

@Quaagars

Meh. Does anyone really read the back of packets? I don't, anyway. If it makes trans men feel included too it takes nothing away from me, I'm still a woman doing it. Is the "people who shave" comparable? I don't think it is as men who shave isn't the same as trans men would call themselves men too. So already inclusive, being trans men. Trans men with women's products though, not inclusive for trans men.

LateSummerGarden · 05/09/2020 11:22

Why didnt anyone tell me this before???

I know, it's a mystery, isnt it.

Or a conspiracy.

One or the other.

SoManyActivities · 05/09/2020 11:20

Some men menstruate. Still makes them men. They’re not reduced to their bits.

Also, does this mean that if my DH (who is a man) and I want another child, I can hand over all of the pregnancy, giving birth and breastfeeding shit to him, and I can just have an orgasm and have my part in the process done with? If we are 'not reduced to our bits'?

Why didnt anyone tell me this before???

LateSummerGarden · 05/09/2020 11:16

I no longer menstruate. I’m still a god damn women.

Of course you are. They key words in this sentence are 'used to'. No man has ever menstruated, ever will or ever can.

A woman who 'no longer mentlstruates' is not the same as a man.

LateSummerGarden · 05/09/2020 11:14

I don't understand why 'non binary' people would be triggered by the use of the word 'woman'.

Surely the whole point of identifying as non binary is showing everyone that you don't fit squarely into either gender box?

After all, female 'non binary' partners aren't surprised when they are the ones who become pregnant. Or are they?

Isn't having periods just part of the female bit, or not having them part of the male bit, of being non binary?

SoManyActivities · 05/09/2020 11:08

I no longer menstruate. I’m still a god damn women.

Er, yes we know. Because not all women menstruate for various reasons, but everyone who menstruates is a woman. Its really not that hard, I don't understand how people get so confused over this!

Some men menstruate. Still makes them men. They’re not reduced to their bits.

How, exactly, are you a man if you menstruate? Do you know what the mean of 'man' is?
