Sorry for the daily fail link but has anyone seen this? Sanitary products for people who menstruate from Superdrug. What were they thinking?

No I didn't miss it, I just didn't feel the need to answer or comment on it as I thought "yeah, good point" Grin
Then again I'm not trans, so I don't presume to know what it feels like to go buy them every month.

NiceGerbil · 05/09/2020 17:58

Better made and cheaper probs

TorkTorkBam · 05/09/2020 17:56

If the ones in the "man" package are better made I will buy them. Like I do with socks.

NiceGerbil · 05/09/2020 17:54

'If they really wanted to hell they would make boxes of tampons look less obviously like a box of tampons

Like make them look like a box of chocolates, or a pair of shoes?
That'll just make even MORE confusion lol'

What an incredibly sexist comment.

Not surprised.

@Quaagars

Yes, they could do as someone else suggested earlier and make a “man package” one and put them in the “man aisle”, where they could also ascertain the take-up of said products

Hmm, good idea on the face of it, but I'd have thought the amount of people buying them wouldn't be worth doing a whole new man range for - the way I see it it makes more sense to just make the ones already available inclusive for everyone.

Did you you miss my previous query on a previous comment of yours?

Quaagars
“Meh. Does anyone really read the back of packets?
I don't, anyway.
If it makes trans men feel included too it takes nothing away from me, I'm still a woman doing it.
Is the "people who shave" comparable? I don't think it is as men who shave isn't the same as trans men would call themselves men too.
So already inclusive, being trans men.
Trans men with women's products though, not inclusive for trans men.”

If no-one reads the back how is it going to make them feel included?

TorkTorkBam · 05/09/2020 17:42

I don't think removing the word woman makes it more inclusive in reality. It is an empty gesture.

There are meaningful things they could do if they really cared. Many of those things might help women too. Many of us would appreciate things being less gendered even when sex-specific. The real things are harder. They are not actually bothered so they do the non-thing and give themselves a gold star. I am not impressed. If I had gender dysphoria I would be even less impressed I think.

I object to the falseness of the support for the transmen and non-binary females.

Keep in mind that the vast majority of transmen and non-binary are teenage females who will later desist.

Let's say Superdrug really wanted to help females who are uncomfortable buying period products.

The transmans in the article reminds me of the mortification I felt as a young teenager if I had to buy sanitary towels myself in the shop and "everybody" would know I was on my period or had periods sometimes (nobody else gave a hoot of course, it was all in my mind). I am sure I was not the only teenager to feel this way.

The writing on the package doesn't help really with any of that does it? It is an empty gesture.

If they really wanted to hell they would make boxes of tampons look less obviously like a box of tampons. Or they would have some of them in another aisle or dotted around, like they do with products they want to push, so the awkward female person does not have to browse the feminine products aisle.

Superdrug are showing fake support for trans people imo.

Quaagars · 05/09/2020 17:27

Being more inclusive for trans men

Trans men being biologically female just for clarity as earlier on the thread some people didn't seem to realise and thought it was referring to trans women

midgebabe · 05/09/2020 17:26

Quavers, it's obvious most transmen desist

Let's start with trans gender being innate. Obviously

We know now that thousands of teenage girls are seeking help with their transgender identity. It follows therefore that in each generation thousands of girls have had difficulties with their gender identity. Just historically there has been little support.

Where have those troubled girls gone?

Many stand here before you, having reconciled themselves to having a female body and generally thinking gender is something to be avoided rather than celebrated

DobbyTheHouseElk · 05/09/2020 17:25

@BaronessWrongCrowd

I look forward to the day that condoms come with packaging that says they are for people who ejaculate.
🤣🤣🤣
TorkTorkBam · 05/09/2020 17:24

Quagaars I am going by Tavistock and GIDS reports amongst others. Huge spike in young teenage girls identifying as boys in recent years. 80% desist rate observed. Ergo, most would be teenage females or thereabouts. It is well documented.

Quaagars · 05/09/2020 17:23

If anyone truly believes that the erasure of women is to be inclusive to TM and not to appease sick men who hate women, many of whom push this ideology, then I have swampland in Arizona to sell you

Confused What's that aimed at? Being more inclusive for trans men who menstruate is just a cover for sicko women hating men who are out to erase us all? Oookay..... Hmm Biscuit That's um.... no words for that thinking really.

There's a lot of this virtue signalling about at the moment. It's an easy win for corporations that otherwise couldn't care less about their customers or marginalised people. The best example of that I've seen lately was Coca-Cola using a singular "they" about someone in an advert and getting a load of fawning praise for it on Twitter, until someone pointed out their practices of employing hitmen to kill trade union leaders at their bottling plants in Colombia, for being the single biggest plastic packaging polluter in the world, for depleting groundwater, and for donating to far-right political parties. All this gender stuff doesn't cost them anything to do and allows companies to carry on doing the same dangerous, abusive practices they've always done but pretend to be progressive. It's just marketing.
Quaagars · 05/09/2020 17:13

How would you know? Do you have any links to back that up?
Yes, I'm sure some do later desist, but that's a big assumption and jump to say the vast majority of trans men are teenagers.

Suffrajester · 05/09/2020 17:11

Girls menstruate too, I was 11 when I had my first period and I was nowhere near old enough to be called a woman. Some even start at 9 or 10. But yes, only female people menstruate.
And I agree "feminine hygiene" isn't a good term for it. There are lots of very feminine men, and very butch, neutral or masculine women (like me!), we shouldn't be assigning gender norms to what's a sexed biological process. Really we shouldn't be putting gender norms on anything at all, they're a regressive sexist and homophobic concept. How they got elevated to be even more important than biological reality and then embraced by people calling themselves progressive is beyond me. It makes me wonder if they were ever really all that accepting of women, LGB people and transsexuals and neurodiverse and disabled people in the first place if they were so willing to throw us all under the bus and celebrate 1950s Western gender stereotypes all over again.

VanGoghsDog · 05/09/2020 16:58

My make ex used to buy sanitary towels, cut them in half and use them in his boxers for his prostate drippage.

He's not a "person who menstruates", so now he can't buy them......

DidoLamenting · 05/09/2020 16:49

Hands up any posters who have had to buy male incontinence products. I'm sure some of you will have male partners or relatives who need them.

Did the shop staff stare at you , question you , laugh behind your back?

NiceGerbil · 05/09/2020 15:24

It's not about fear.

Obfuscating language will have real life consequences.

EG cervix havers etc.

Other point- agree feminine hygiene products is awful.

Dealing with periods is not at all 'feminine'.

Final point- yes some transwoman say they have periods/ try to simulate them.

DidoLamenting · 05/09/2020 14:56

As a trans person who still experiences periods, I dread the days when my supplies start running low

'I run through a million scenarios of people staring at me, questioning me, laughing behind my back. Now I can confidently walk into a Superdrug and if anyone challenged me I could point to the packet and say "look, this is made for me".

It has been said before but that really is the biggest load of nonsense. Who on earth in Superdrug, or any other chemist, is going to challenge a customer on what they are buying? At most you might be asked in case of certain over- the counter drugs , e.g migraine products, if you are the patient.

For goodness sake is this silly person unaware that many, many men buy sanitary products for their female partners or relatives? Both my son and my husband have done so.

Skyliner001 · 05/09/2020 14:35

@Quaagars

Trans women will not and can never menstruate as it requires a uterus which they do not have

Nobody, anywhere on here has said they can, what are you talking about?
It's about trans "men*
Inclusive towards trans men (biologically female, yes) but still trans men.
Why do people keep bringing up trans women? It's not even about them!
Are people deliberately confusing trans women (biologically male) with trans men (biologically female) or something or just genuinely don't know the difference?!

Most gender critical people will do absolutely anything to blame something on trans-women. It's quite spectacular, any thread can be derailed and made to be about them 😊
Conniethesensible · 05/09/2020 14:30

That trans men are indeed men not women.
