Well this should be interesting!

Ayann is much more than this article, but if you're not familiar with her, here's something she wrote about J.K -

Just had an email update on this. Laurie Penny has pulled out. Was she due to speak against the motion alongside Bragg and Andrews? If so, it means they’ve now only got blokes speaking in favour of cancel culture.

“Laurie Penny will no longer be taking part in the debate, but we're delighted to announce that Kehinde Andrews and Billy Bragg will be arguing against the motion“

It’s this Tuesday coming, which is also the deadline for the defendants in Ann Sinnott’s case responding to her challenge. Could be interesting!

This is, of course, why we end up with people like Rachel Dolezal and Jessica Krug, as within academia identity gets wielded as a shield. The more oppression one can claim, the more that your career will progress, unhindered by questions like whether your work can be substantiated, or even if it meets measures of basic competence.

Exactly. I read an article in the DM this morning saying that the president (I think) of the NUS is predicting a huge surge in Covid when students return to University and that they should therefore stay away. Of course, ‘disadvantaged’ students including black, gay, trans, poor and disabled should be exempted. I can easily see a scenario where a wave of straight, middle class white students start identifying as ‘queer’, ‘non binary’ or having a disability.

I know it’s a bit of a taboo issue to discuss, so I’ve never brought it up here before, but there is a rise in people self-iding as disabled. I know someone (a relative by marriage) who has decided that they have Asperger’s and is happy to tell everyone this. They have never been diagnosed or even sought a diagnosis. Their ‘evidence’ is that they have an obsessive interest in engineering and poor social skills. This is just as insulting to those with the condition as men who state they are women because they like high-heels and pink mini skirts.

Wow, really looking forward to this.

Bragg is one if the original (beardless) wokebeards.

AHA is extraordinary. I read her autobiography years ago, and one of the many, many things I took from it was a complete understanding of how someone with her experience would naturally be drawn to the right.

She watched FGM being excused as 'cultural' by the UK left (and other Western nations) having experienced it herself - in particularly traumatic circumstances.

NonnyMouse1337 · 06/09/2020 09:37

@queenofknives

She said it in the interview pp linked earlier in the thread.

You should read her book, the Caged Virgin. She is really amazing and has definitely known what it is to not be free.

Thanks queenofknives. I managed to miss that video clip on the first page. I agree it's a very good comeback. She kept a cool head at such a profoundly arrogant (and in my opinion racist) statement by the guy. He actually said something like 'is it part of the application process to learn to say such clichés?' in response to her statement, as if an immigrant to the US (or any other Western democracy) has no genuine understanding of the freedoms and opportunities taken for granted by those who live in Western democracies. His condescending attitude and sneering superiority encapsulated by his comments really pissed me off lol.

@Childrenofthestones

"You grew up in freedom, and you can spit on freedom because you don't know what it is not to have freedom" AHA

Brilliant come back

Do you know when and in what context AHA said that? It really encapsulates how I feel about some of aspects of left-wing politics in the UK (happy to ignore women's rights, pushing for cancel culture and censorship etc).

[quote TheRealMcKennaDonsTinfoilHat]“Whiteness is a process rooted in the social structure, one that induces a form of psychosis framed by its irrationality, which is beyond any rational engagement.”

How can anyone debate someone who could actually write such utter dross? Is this what passes for academic rigour these days?

There appears to be a spelling mistake in the title of the paper...

I used to love and admire Billy Bragg. Can’t believe how he despises women now. I’ve still got most of his CDs, love how honest he sounds, someone you’d like to have a drink with. This really hurts.

SerenityNowwwww · 05/09/2020 23:27

My blood pressure won’t take it! I should chose to be amused but I’d just end up yelling.

Wondersense · 05/09/2020 23:21

@SerenityNowwwww

Sounds like a drunken debate in uni by 1st year philosophy students...
Excellent. We can count on you attending then? Grin

I think you should read the life story of Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

Wee Billy? But will he let the little ladies speak? Always came across as an phoney and an insufferable bore who like the sound of his own voice too much (there I’ve said it - always thought it but it used to be like saying you kicked kittens for fun).

SunsetBeetch · 05/09/2020 13:43

@liverbird10

I'd always thought Billy Bragg was a decent bloke, am surprised to read all this. Sad
Nah, he showed his arse on twitter a while ago.

TheRealMcKennaDonsTinfoilHat · 05/09/2020 13:35

Shall we go on ...?

You missed FGM off that list. Fortunately, AHA should be able to educate the bros on that one, and the effects she experienced from speaking frankly and openly on behalf of undoubtedly the most oppressed women on earth.

twoHopes · 05/09/2020 13:00

What we are witnessing is activism by and on behalf of marginalised groups who are seeking to redress the structural inequalities that have historically held them back

The key point here is "on behalf of" isn't it. I really look forward to Billy Bragg explaining to a woman born in Somalia and a working class lesbian how he is acting "on behalf of" marginalised groups. Please Billy, do tell us more.

ItalianHat · 05/09/2020 12:30

What we are witnessing is activism by and on behalf of marginalised groups who are seeking to redress the structural inequalities that have historically held them back

The only way you can argue this with a straight face is if you deliberately ignore the record of treatment of women and girls because they are female.

Let's write the list:
Femicide: the millions of foetuses aborted worldwide because they are female
Rape of women and girls because they are female
Paying women less because they are female

Shall we go on ...?

NB: for the record, it is a woman's right t choose if she continues a pregnancy, but she should not be forced to terminate a pregnancy because of the sex of the foetus,

ItalianHat · 05/09/2020 12:24

I think that was Stokely Carmichael, not Malcolm X

@KimThomas thanks for that! I couldn't remember and was too lazy to google (slaps own wrist). I suppose part of my point is that historically, many revolutionary movements, dedicated to relieving oppression, systematically either overlook patriarchal oppression of women, or deem it not as important as whatever other oppression needs to be contested.

Viz. current gender ideology extremism ...
