Co op

Sorry if there’s already a thread about this but a trans person called Lisa objected to the Co op advertising in the ‘transphobic’ Spectator. Someone from the co op of course apologised and said they would look at not advertising there again. It was brought to Andrew Neil’s attention (chairman of Spectator) and his reply on Twitter was

No need to bother, Co-op. As of today you are henceforth banned from advertising in The Spectator, in perpetuity. We will not have companies like yours use their financial might to try to influence our editorial content, which is entirely a matter for the editor.

Glad the Spectator are standing up to this rubbish.

And no matter how much I read I don't think I'll read myself into being transphobic 😂😂😂😂

Skyliner001 · 05/09/2020 10:20

Skyliner001 · 05/09/2020 10:20

Loving the responses thanks all. X

Skyliner plops on threads & says the same thing all the time...tedious.

Muttonindistress · 05/09/2020 09:46

@Skyliner001 could I suggest that if you are really interested in this issue, you read the actual articles in the Spectator which led to the accusations of transphobia. They have a free trial at the moment so you won’t even have to pay. There are several articles, mostly written by James Kirkup, running over the last few years, so this will take some time - but it’s worth the effort if you want to know why so many women are concerned about the effects of trans activism on women’s rights and child welfare. Which, I’m sure you will agree, are very reasonable concerns for all women - particularly mothers.

I have read most of the articles and found no evidence of transphobia in them, just a principled journalist addressing the potential dangers of trans activism in a thoughtful, intelligent manner. My reading comprehension is pretty good, I think, but perhaps I have missed something; so I would be most grateful if you could also take the time to read some of the articles and let me know your opinion. Thank you. X

Sorry, not sure I was clear. I was trying to say that it was very lazy of Sky not to have read the thread in the first place, and tickled by her/his use of the phrase "reading up" when all she/he had to do was read 50 odd short posts and a couple of tweets to get up to speed on the whole situation. To me, reading up on a subject or incident implies something a bit more involved.

CasuallyMasculine · 05/09/2020 08:40

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito

Loving the idea that "reading up" is now defined as reading a couple of pages of internet forum posts. What's the word count here you reckon, 500 words max? That's some serious intellectual non-curiosity.
This is one story, on one thread, with multiple links to the tweets and articles that fill in the gaps.

I would agree with you if @Skyliner001 were interested in wider reading around the subject of trans activism and its toxic effects on freedom of speech, but I didn’t get the impression he/she was.

MillyMollyFarmer · 05/09/2020 08:17

That’s escalated quickly and we want to set the record straight. The tweet sent yesterday was incorrect and does not reflect our advertising position. Our policy supports editorial freedom and you can read more about it here: https://coop.uk/3bs0jhB ^Fi

This is the only response they should make. The idea that any advertiser should try and influence editorial decisions should sit uncomfortably with everyone for quite obvious reasons. Regardless of whether their position is the same as yours on this issue, this isn’t how things should work. It’s a dangerous thing to start happening and anyone more interested in their personal agenda than journalistic freedom, is a person who lacks the intelligence and moral compass to assess the situation fairly.

Co-op speedily rectified this because they were made aware of the implications.

@Skyliner001

Thanks SirS, haven't had time to read up.

Will do so, and retract my business if I consider they are transphobic 😊

You don’t have to “read up”, just reading the whole thread, rather than just the OP, tells you all you need to know about Co-op’s U-turn.

I’d be interested to know what your definition of “transphobic” is.

Skyliner001 · 05/09/2020 07:47

ArabellaScott · 05/09/2020 07:46

This is what taking a stand and fighting back against transphobia looks like? Bit of a shit social movement, really.

I see in other news that Extinction Rebellion have attempted to stop newspapers being distributed because they don't like the way they report the news.

I had my reservations about ER; these attempts to control the narrative really piss me off. It's so PATRONISING. implying they know better than all the readers of Murdoch papers. Publish your own bloody papers, make your own points. Attempting to stop tabloid readers being polluted by wrongthink will not endear you to anyone!

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 05/09/2020 07:28

@Skyliner001

Thanks for the heads up love that the co-op are taking a stand and fighting Back against transphobia. It will make me more likely to use them, thanks again 😊
*Coop still want to advertise in The Spectator (don't know if they'll be allowed)
  • Coop still sell The Spectator in their stores (and the Telegraph and the Daily Mail, which I am sure you also find objectionable

  • Coop backtracked on their 'taking a stand and fighting back against transphobia' tweets.

I think you need higher standards before declaring your 'love' for things.

Helmetbymidnight · 05/09/2020 07:19

im a member of a group: stop funding hate' they (mostly men) were delighted now they are furious. they dont care what the so-called transphobia was - they just hate the co-op now. Confused

BacklashBacklash · 05/09/2020 07:03

I'm struck by the fact that the original complaining tweet by Lisa was replied to with a "let us investigate further" tweet, and then it was the next day when the tweet saying "we'll be looking to not use this publication again" tweet came. Paraphrasing obviously. That to me isn't just an overenthusiastic social media staff member. Time has been taken to check, and the second reply (now deleted!) looks to have come from higher up with the detail it contains. It isn't a standard zealous-young-person reply.

NiceGerbil · 05/09/2020 02:15

No. Don't care that they had a rethink after getting a bollocking from Andrew Neil.

One tweet. One. And they said right yes we're cancelling the spectator. Wtf. This should worry anyone.

NiceGerbil · 05/09/2020 02:14

One tweet. One. And they said, yes we'll not be advertising in the spectator any more.

I subscribed to spectator today.

The amount of women who have been life long lefty activists involved in feminism, LGB activism taking up with the times and spectator is massive.

The left has a serious problem when their natural supporters are driving this.

Interesting.

Should read full threads before commenting, years here and have not managed to get into that habit

Well I guess..admitting ones mistake is admirable. But..the fact that it happened is problematic in itself if the higher ups did not approve..surely..stuff like that has to be approved before tweeting? I cannot believe that companies just let random people tweet out their political opinions via the company accounts?!

DeRigueurMortis · 05/09/2020 01:39

This is good.

I don't care frankly that it took a man to call bullshit on this.

The Co-op have learned that this type of capitulation to identity politics is a PR disaster.

They won't make the same mistake again and I hope other companies are taking notes that "virtue" marketing is a very dangerous game (also citing the Body Shops gaff re: JKR).

AN has his faults but he knows his stuff (that interview with Corbyn was cringeworthy when AN tore him apart on his policies pre-election) and he's absolutely got his finger on the pulse of a lot of issues.

I'm sure editorial freedom was the main motivation but I'd also bet good money that he understands the issues here and is GC.

Marvellous reply. Wish this would happen more often tbh.

powershowerforanhour · 05/09/2020 00:42

I did rather enjoy Andrew Neil's interview with that wee American chap who called him a leftie.

Childrenofthestones · 05/09/2020 00:24

Time to cancel the New Statesman and take on the Spectator

Redshoeblueshoe · 04/09/2020 23:52

I really should have written "I hope it will make a lot of big companies think about who is running their Twitter account"
