Sorry if there’s already a thread about this but a trans person called Lisa objected to the Co op advertising in the ‘transphobic’ Spectator. Someone from the co op of course apologised and said they would look at not advertising there again. It was brought to Andrew Neil’s attention (chairman of Spectator) and his reply on Twitter was

No need to bother, Co-op. As of today you are henceforth banned from advertising in The Spectator, in perpetuity. We will not have companies like yours use their financial might to try to influence our editorial content, which is entirely a matter for the editor.

Glad the Spectator are standing up to this rubbish.

@fatblackcatspaw

oh and Andrew Neil reported as well on twitter that The Spectator gained 550 new subscribers after this debacle - about an extra £82,000 revenure per year.

@Skyliner001

Loving the responses thanks all. X
odd... why are you named after a really dodgy massive development going ahead in Leith? The air pollution is so bad from Marine traffic there they are being built with windows that don't open. www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/politics/council/stalinist-leith-waterfront-skyliner-flats-approved-edinburgh-council-641439

They're not actually interested in being ethical. They are happy with the status quo.

Doing things like this makes them feel right on with no actual effort.

2Rebecca · 05/09/2020 21:21

Oops should have previewed that one

2Rebecca · 05/09/2020 21:20

I think some corporations confuse ethical behaviour with being woke. They think if they support Pride pay get Stonewall medals or whatever and have a visible women they can then treat their employees and customers poorly

ArabellaScott · 05/09/2020 20:32

@Antibles

Not playing devil's advocate but the Co-op's own brand beauty and household products have, certainly in the past, been animal cruelty free (leaping bunny logo) for many a year and I support them for that.

I don't want one stupid woke teenager's tweet to undermine the ethical stance they do take on some things. I didn't know about the milk price thing though.

I've been with the Co op bank for more than 20 years, and I support some of their ethical standards (some have definitely slipped).
thecompletenonsequitur · 05/09/2020 16:13

I found myself on this coop page.

At the bottom it asks "Is there anything wrong with this page?"

Under "What were you doing?" I wrote:
^I was reading Section C.

"Has an Diversity Policy and recruits and promotes employees on the basis of their suitability for the job without discrimination in terms of race, religion, politics, national origin, colour, gender, age, sexual orientation, marital status, disability or unrelated criminal convictions (see Diversity Policy)."^

Under "What went wrong?" I wrote:
^1. 'Sex' is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010. 'Gender' is not a protected characteristic.

This is a direct copy from the Government website:

The following characteristics are protected characteristics—

age;
disability;
gender reassignment;
marriage and civil partnership;
pregnancy and maternity;
race;
religion or belief;
sex;
sexual orientation.

I note that no mention is made by the Co Op of pregnancy and maternity in this section. Perhaps mention is made elsewhere and I´ve missed it?

  1. I couldn't find your Diversity Policy.^

@Ameanstreakamilewide couldn't find a gif of her "in perpetuity" speech but actually I think this one is more fitting Grin.

MillyMollyFarmer · 05/09/2020 13:55

SunsetBeetch I didn’t know that about him! I find his story fascinating.

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito

*You rarely see 'in perpetuity' in Tweets. I liked it.*

Indeed. It reminded me of Danaerys (sp?) in GoT.

You just know Andrew Neil was livid when he wrote the Tweet. 😉

A non sequitur here, but anyway...In my house, he's known as the 'kissing consultant' because when William and Kate were married and kissed on the balcony.
He said - in his gruff Paisley way - 'they'll have to do that again'.

I liked it.

Douglas Murray also told the Co-op to stick it too. I love him.

I love seeing some backbone displayed by large organisations and not (as a PP has rightly said) buckling under the 'weight' of one Tweet from some random trans nobody.

Are the usual suspects behind 'Stop Funding Hate'?

[quote MillyMollyFarmer]Maajid Nawaz tweeted to Co-Op here:

Brilliant. I really like Majid.

He successfully sued a civil rights organisation for labelling him an "anti muslim extremist"

ArabellaScott · 05/09/2020 12:36

It's a bit discombobulating to see the lop-sidedness of 'debate' consisting of reasoned, logical, referenced arguments from the feminists, next to a list of various empty mantras from the TRA. I imagine it's like watching an argument between a scientist and a Scientologist.

Cailleach1 · 05/09/2020 12:19

They seem to be banging their own drum wrt their ethics. Do they admit on their blurb that they force farmers to sell milk at production cost? Slightly tangential, but I can't help but wonder how that affects animal welfare.?

Bella2020 · 05/09/2020 11:58

Co-OP is the nearest shop to us, in the nearby village, and I'm determined we won't be using it again. I didn't know they force farmers to sell them milk at production cost. Bloody disgraceful. And now, all this cowtowing to the TRAs. No more.

MillyMollyFarmer · 05/09/2020 11:48

And no matter how much I read I don't think I'll read myself into being transphobic

Good! Nobody here would ever encourage actual transphobia. It’s good to see you agree with us on that. Now if we could just get you to be against misogyny and silencing of women and their opinions, we could almost have an actual conversation with you rather than the weird childish meaningless drop-ins to add a silly comment.

DialSquare · 05/09/2020 10:31

Skyliner001 is doing wonders for the GC point of view. Any lurkers on the fence will see the total lack of argument compared to the intelligent GC postings breaking down the issue. They will then invariably fall on the GC side.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 05/09/2020 10:26

@Skyliner001

And no matter how much I read I don't think I'll read myself into being transphobic 😂😂😂😂
Thats true

Ive read mumsnet for ages and ive never read myself into being transphobic either

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 05/09/2020 10:24

skyliners turnaround was quicker than the co ops

Skyliner001 · 05/09/2020 10:22

@MadamBatty

Skyliner plops on threads & says the same thing all the time...tedious.
Not unlike GC people then...
