calling once more for a more nuanced debate around gender identity and women's rights. It's here https://www.jkrowling.com/opinions/statement-from-j-k-rowling-regarding-the-robert-f-kennedy-human-rights-ripple-of-hope-award/.

Thanks JKR

A message on Mermaids Twitter page:

*We are reflecting on JK Rowling's latest comments.

For now, we'll say this: trans rights do not come at the expense of women's rights. We believe that all women and trans people have the right to be safe,
respected and equal. *

So absolutely no acknowledgement whatsoever about the parts of JKR's letter which relate directly to organisations such as themselves. What about the growing concerns of the vast array of professionals who are seriously worried about the potential damage that the affirmative approach is doing? Nope, they've gone for the cop out 'no conflict of rights' line. Without any explanation of how they've reached that conclusion. Am genuinely interested in how they will respond in full.

zanahoria · 28/08/2020 12:33

Does anyone even care if Kerry is disappointed?

zanahoria · 28/08/2020 12:31

I meant sex being assigned at birth,

I have no idea what she is talking about

HumousWhereTheHeartIs · 28/08/2020 12:29

This has led to a colleague explaining to me at length that the words women and woman are offensive to trans people, and shouldn't be used.

The same colleague has a trans friend who is campaigning for their child's birth certificate to be changed so they could become 'mother' and not 'father'. I pointed out that his friend is their child's biological father regardless. He now thinks I'm anti-trans which is why I am subjected to these lectures.

Jeeeez · 28/08/2020 12:29

Should have done it in red and ended it with 'Appalling effort, come see me at break'
🤣🤣🤣

Omgoodness JKR is phenomenal. I'm off to order a Strike book now.

When all the GRA whohar has blown over (please let that be very soon) we all need to put her forward for a Damehood, or whatever is the top bo**x Queenie prize. I can't think of anyone more deserving for turning this shitshow around. On top of everything else she's achieved obviously.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 28/08/2020 12:28

The BBC story is number 1 most read on the news website.
Lots of people must be seeing this for the first time thanks to JKR.

zanahoria · 28/08/2020 12:25

From her own words, I take Rowling’s position to be that the sex one is assigned at birth is the primary and determinative factor of one’s gender, regardless of one’s gender identity—a position that I categorically reject. The science is clear and conclusive: Sex is not binary.

She talks about science then mentions it being assigned at birth?

RozWatching · 28/08/2020 12:22

Ffs. They'll probably "cancel" RFK himself at some point.

Doyoumind · 28/08/2020 12:20

The thing I honestly don't understand about this TRA and kpop crap every time she says something they don't like is that they actually causes her to trend on twitter. They shine light on it by drawing people's attention and rewarding it with a load of violent and abusive tweets. Who are they going to convince with that shit?

zanahoria · 28/08/2020 12:18

Nevermind Harry Potter or Comoran Strike, that post is about the best thing she has written.

She keeps getting called a bigot and keeps responding with beautiful well written arguments.

Somebody remind me what Kerry Kennedy has done asides from being born into a rich family? She behaves like some sort of civil rights aristocrat.

EdgeOfACoin · 28/08/2020 12:13

I mean yes she is set for life money wise and doesnt have to worry about job security etc. But if you think about the venom and shunning you get by being a non-famous GC person, imagine the abuse she must put up with day in and day out

Also, people have lost their jobs just for saying they agree with her! It's a heavy responsibility. She must be absolutely clear in her own mind about what she is saying and have the courage of her convictions.

NotBadConsidering · 28/08/2020 12:12

www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-53944773

[Kennedy] went on to say the organisation categorically rejected Rowling's view that a person's sex is the one they were assigned at birth.
"The science is clear and conclusive: Sex is not binary," she wrote.

I mean how can you deal with this sort of stupidity? No wonder Rowling returned the award, it’s run by a complete imbecile.

Wolfgirrl · 28/08/2020 12:05

I really think 'trans' will end up as a national scandal in years to come, with every agency playing hot potato to shaft the blame.

I think JK will go down as a 21st century suffragette type.

I mean yes she is set for life money wise and doesnt have to worry about job security etc. But if you think about the venom and shunning you get by being a non-famous GC person, imagine the abuse she must put up with day in and day out. Her colleagues and friends have raced to disown her to save their own skins. The domestic violence she suffered has been splashed across the newspapers for public consumption.

Yet she stands firm in her views. Go JK! We are all behind you.

Hazeldine · 28/08/2020 12:02

JKR is a class act, and she's totally right.

"After hearing personally from some of these women, and from such a wide range of professionals, I’ve been forced to the unhappy conclusion that an ethical and medical scandal is brewing. I believe the time is coming when those organisations and individuals who have uncritically embraced fashionable dogma, and demonised those urging caution, will have to answer for the harm they’ve enabled."

Spot on. Thank you so much for shining a light on this, Jo Star

It's terrifying how far this ideology has already progressed – into schools, into medicine, into politics, into official (inaccurate) legal guidance from the likes of the EHRC – without the average person even registering anything about it.

This situation of secrecy, obfuscation and the advancement by stealth of things that the vast majority of the population would be opposed to, if they were aware, informed, and able to participate in the discussion without fear of consequences, is the entire aim of #NoDebate.

Why fear debate if you truly believe that there is no conflict of rights, that the increase in young people identifying as trans is a positive sign of a more accepting society, and that the medical process these young people are being subjected to is safe, thorough, evidence-based and beneficial?

Only one side wants open, nuanced, evidence-based debate. The other wants total unquestioning compliance with the dogma.

The truly scary bit is when you actually think about who stands to gain most from a generation of young people being put on a pathway which will make them reliant on drugs and medications for life. Sure, TRAs, woke celebrities and trans "icons" like Munroe Bergdorf will get their moment in the sun and perhaps a book deal or two out of it, but the silent players with the biggest stake in this are the massive pharmaceutical companies. And the kind of economic and political power they wield is fucking terrifying when you think about it.

crumpet · 28/08/2020 11:58

TRAs are going absolutely bananas on Twitter this morning about it. Calling in their kpop people to flood twitter etc. Such a marked contrast to the dignified (and articulate) JKR stance.

yourhairiswinterfire · 28/08/2020 11:47

[quote WagnersFourthSymphony]Jane Clare Jones has tweeted supporting JKR with a great takedown of the Kennedy letter, in coloured ink!

I love Jane. She's like a bemused teacher scribbling over a shitty essay.

Should have done it in red and ended it with 'Appalling effort, come see me at break'. Grin

LastTrainEast · 28/08/2020 11:44

They didn't like the line about “If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. Are they homophobes as well? I know some American Christians seize on transgender as a way to avoid the 'sin' of being gay.

They don't seem to know the difference between gender and sex and they speak of all those trans murders and suicides as though they were real. The whole thing seems to be copied from twitter without any real examination of facts.

I knew nothing about this Kerry Kennedy aside from her being famous for being someone's daughter. Though googling her own words gives a bit of insight.

CorvusPurpureus · 28/08/2020 11:44

She is absolutely incredible. Fearless & cool under fire.

I am so, so grateful for her integrity & courage.

Funnily enough, two of my dc are big Harry Potter fans, but the third, 14yo dd1 who thinks all fantasy is 'silly & boring' is the one who's taken to following JKR on Twitter.

The other day dd1 got involved in a WhatsApp spat where some of her classmates were bullying another. She told them exactly what she thought of them, & stuck up for the girl being bullied, who she doesn't even particularly get along with.

When she came to tell me about it, I commented that this was rather brave of her (she's a bit intimidated by the bullying ringleader, who's the class Queen Bee).

'Yeah', she said with a grin, 'I just had a bit of a JKR moment.'

Courage calls to courage.

Asitgoes · 28/08/2020 11:40

Thank you JKR for your clarity and integrity.

highame · 28/08/2020 11:34

Can't seem to find the right twitter thread to add support

SunsetBeetch · 28/08/2020 11:32

What a woman!

MichelleofzeResistance · 28/08/2020 11:31

Bravo JK. More sense and sanity in response to that garbled quasi religious fervoured nonsense that posits a faith based opinion as fact, (and the only true fact), and insists that female people who will not without complaint accept being labelled, having their identity forcibly redefined, controlled and prescribed to them, and their life and language redefined and controlled to reflect this faith based situation as the only reality to their own disadvantage.... are evil.

This really is where we are.

The trans lobby feel strongly that their identity is unique and cannot be boxed in standard ways; that they should not be labelled against their will nor people use language to them or about them that they find jarring or offensive, that they should be able to live as they wish without other people's needs and demands controlling them.

GC women are all for that.

The issue is that female people would like this to be reciprocal.

SoManyActivities · 28/08/2020 11:31

She even tells them to shove their award up their arse in a classy and dignified way!

I know! I love her.

BrassicaRabbit · 28/08/2020 11:30

I'm ambivalent on Harry Potter. But wow, I have the deepest respect for JKR.

Justnormajean · 28/08/2020 11:25

Thank you Joanne, thank you.
