Looks like Mermaids are cleaning up the website to remove the claim that toy and clothing preference is a sign of being trans.

This now says of course' there's no connection between toys and 'transgender children'

Looks like an Autistic child description. No wonder the correlation is enormous.

Definitely

Gwynfluff · 20/08/2020 19:39

this is a step back or a step forward by them? There seems to be a TRA theme that suggests that being stereotypically masculine, complete with pride and contentment in their male body, must not preclude them from declaring themselves women.

Agree. Think there is something in this.

It’ll be interesting to see the new list. Is it linked in with scaling back of dysphoria as a basis for being trans? It’s already taken hold in the some of the adult discourse which derides trans people who accept dysphoria and have surgery as ‘truscum’.

KingaRoo · 20/08/2020 19:17

I think critical thinking and analysis needs to be taught in school!

wellbehavedwomen · 20/08/2020 17:42

Oh my God, that image of, 'ways in which gender dysphoria may present' and they cite autism, ADHD, bi-plar, borderline personality disorder, loneliness, poor family relationships, poor academic performance.. and then, at the very end, 'reduced gender dysphoria.'

A sign of gender dysphoria is reduced gender dysphoria?

These are the most vulnerable possible kids. And changing their minds on being trans - in all the most vulnerable groups - is apparently more evidence for being trans? EVERYTHING is an indication of gender dysphoria? And anyone identified as extremely vulnerable amongst their peers, desperate for love, acceptance and peace of mind... is therefore more likely to be trans?

There are words for this sort of thinking. I won't use them as I've not been deleted yet, and would like to keep it that way, but bloody hell.

Every time I see that Barbie to GI Joe poster I can't understand why people don't see how ridiculous it is.

There was a discussion about mermaids training a while ago. This ☝️thread has links to recordings and transcripts.

@AntsInPenzance

Why are dolls and pushchairs considered 'girls' toys, but men pushing their babies in real pushchairs isn't seen as negative or feminine?
And ironing clothes. When it's actually insisted on in the Armed Forces.

And playing in the toy kitchen? I'm sure Gordon Ramsay would have something to say about that.

The ridiculous sexism underpinning this nonsense is so obvious. I'm constantly shocked.

Let's not forget this beauty, Barbie to GI Joe, drenched in regressive stereotypes
Urgh.
moptophairshop · 20/08/2020 14:54

@MoltenLasagne yes I thought there were safeguarding red flags in there too (becoming withdrawn, being secretive, self harm). It just reinforces how important it is that anyone involved needs to be trained in safeguarding. This applies to every aspect of working with children (every adult in a school is legally required to attend annual safeguarding training). As a charity surely they must be regulated so who ensures they comply with safeguarding regulations?

That's shocking.

Interesting that going up the female scale the women's figures are becoming more accentuated towards an hour glass shape and their hair is getting bigger! Whereas the men all look the same...

forsucksfake · 20/08/2020 14:39

@MoltenLasagne Excellent point.

Homophobia, emotional blackmail, magical thinking, financial incentive and sexism will blind even those responsible for safeguarding to their training.

Aesopfable · 20/08/2020 14:35

I do wonder though if this is a step back or a step forward by them? There seems to be a TRA theme that suggests that being stereotypically masculine, complete with pride and contentment in their male body, must not preclude them from declaring themselves women. In which case mermaids suggestions that playing with toys stereotypically associated with the opposite sex was necessary would be condemned as transphobic.

MoltenLasagne · 20/08/2020 14:29

I'm really appalled that a strong aversion to their own genitals is considered a flag for gender dysphoria and not a massive flag for sexual abuse. Similarly the wishing to be another sex - many children experiencing abuse wish to be the other sex in the belief it will keep them safe.

Those are literally the only symptoms in the diagnostic criteria that aren't based in stereotypes and they are key flags IMO for abuse.

Aesopfable · 20/08/2020 14:28

Sorry - being thought of a ‘gay’ which is hurtful.

Aesopfable · 20/08/2020 14:26

Not to mention being ‘gay’ which is hurtful

(Their inverted commas)

gardenbird48 · 20/08/2020 14:13

I wonder if Mermaids will be contacting the families who have started socially transitioning their kids on the basis of this information and update them with the new list of indicators (whatever they are?) to review whether they are on the right track Will the list of referrals to GIDS that Mermaids have helped with on this basis be reviewed?

KatieAlcock · 20/08/2020 14:07

You can't get a diagnosis of GD in childhood without adhering to stereotypes of the opposite sex. It's in the diagnostic criteria.

So they don't stand by what they have said in the past, but the women who called it out at the time are still going to be castigated, arent they.

Given the amount of influence they have, this is pretty disgraceful.

And there's this....

moptophairshop · 20/08/2020 13:44

Oh my God that list is shocking. 'Possibly dyslexic' Confused Its title alone 'How to guess if a child or teen has a gender identity disorder'. Guess is another word for a stab in the dark when you don't have enough information. Is something this serious really something that parents should be 'guessing'?
Given the very clear crossovers in the list with a number of conditions such as ASD I would expect that anyone presenting this information also has sufficient training in other conditions e.g. autism awareness. It would be nothing less than negligence to fail to highlight to parents some of the shared characteristics (like eye contact, hyper-focus on a hobby to name just a couple). This is especially relevant to girls who traditionally have been harder to diagnose given the coping mechanisms they may have developed to 'mask' the autism.
Did this list really ever go out to concerned parents? Who oversees their resources? Surely they must be accountable to someone.

Roswellconspiracy · 20/08/2020 13:20

But then these strange contradictions are never seen are they.

Same way 2 year olds ask for vaginas amd know who they are when most of ours are eating the dog food and sleeping on the stairs. But teenage girls who don't want to be exposed to penises are being lead by parents as they can't possibly have come up with it on their own..

highame · 20/08/2020 13:19

Wonder who they're listening to? A few weeks ago Stonewall removed Mermaids but said it was technical and I think they re-instated. Is it possible that Stonewall are sensing the change and in order to maintain their links with Mermaids are asking them to do a bit of a reality check.

This is just another attack of Conspiracyitus but could be a connection.

The JKR stuff did an awful lot of damage and it takes time for changes

Roswellconspiracy · 20/08/2020 13:11

And when their kid picks up a toy spanner and starts trying to "unscrew" the car their dads amd mums will register they are being copied and go with it.

But if a boy picks up a doll and copies their parents feeding/holding/changing their baby sibling they loose the ability to see it for what it is.
