Whilst there are lots of good thing in here (the reversing of the ban on trans people in the military, for example), there is also this:

"Guaranteeing transgender students have access to facilities based on their gender identity. On his first day in office, Biden will reinstate the Obama-Biden guidance revoked by the Trump-Pence Administration, which will restore transgender students’ access to sports, bathrooms, and locker rooms in accordance with their gender identity. He will direct his Department of Education to vigorously enforce and investigate violations of transgender students’ civil rights."

How he squares this with his pledges regarding women's rights, I do not know. I could scream!

All I can see from Democrat supporters on both the Presidential threads is 'Vote for Biden - he's not Trump'. How is ever going to be a winning strategy?

It’s all they have so ... they’re running with it. (As it happens, I don’t plan on voting from abroad unless rioters start burning down cities in my home state and making me angry ...)

RadicalFern · 21/08/2020 09:48

States and cities are responsible for their own policing. It is not a federal matter.

SunsetBeetch · 21/08/2020 09:17

I think American voters have a very difficult choice to make, just like last time. It's not good, is it?

Sorry I managed to miss Freespeecher's post, otherwise I'd have just said 'what she said'.

Floisme · 21/08/2020 08:57

If the Democrats are to win do they not need to win over people who voted for Trump last time, while also persuading non voters and indeed their own supporters, to go out and vote?
Because, if that's the case, then can I suggest they need to start saying positive things about their own candidate?

@TBHno

I'm no fan of Trump, but I hope he does pounce on this. It's an easy win, and he kind of deserves it? The left deserve to look stupid to supporting this misogynistic shit. The left should have to stand there and clearly state why people with the Y chromosome should be allowed into women's safe spaces.
Here's hoping it gets a lot of airtime, plays really, really badly and the Dems have to backtrack to sanity.

If Trump pounces on this his only motivation would be to 'own the libs', and it would do a huge amount of harm to feminists who simply want to protect women's rights.

Lacking the competence to create effective legislation, or any understanding of the issue, he simply lacks the capacity to effectively protect women's rights. He can only do harm.

'Who else are you going to vote for? That guy? Really?' seems to be the main message of the Biden camp (echoes of Peter Mandelson's "they'll vote for us as they have nowhere else to go" from a few years back).

May well work but inspiring it is not.

HelloToMyKitty · 20/08/2020 21:48

As explained, this isn’t something straightforward. Medical and mental health conditions can get you rejected, which is fair enough. Military isn’t the place for inclusivity, it needs to exclude those unfit for service.

Guaranteeing transgender students have access to facilities based on their gender identity. Awful. The Dems don’t get how this plays among the voting base. Only the wokest of woke support these things.

Own goal if Trump pounces on it

@merrymouse

When US politicians talk about 'centering women' you have to remember that America hasn't even reached the point where concepts like maternity pay and reproductive rights are generally accepted.

I think 'two countries separated by a common language' is very relevant when talking about UK and US feminism.

Yes! I'm in the US and we do not have maternity pay, only 5 weeks guaranteed time off (no pay). We do not have reproductive freedom on all states and female reproductive health care is lacking. We have a high mother mortality rate especially for women of color.

While many professionals have jobs that allow you to negotiate more time off and pay, this is rare in blue collar jobs. Not to mention, we don't have affordable, universal health care coverage.

Women are behind and vey unequal in the US. Also, gun deaths of women are far higher here. So, while domestic violence rates are similar, the lethality is greater here because gun attacks kill more often than other violent attacks.

KayakingOnDown · 20/08/2020 17:24

Yes, the working classes are being ignored by the Democrats.

KayakingOnDown · 20/08/2020 17:21

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel

How out of touch must he be to think this will resonate with the voters he needs to win back from Trump?
This!

@JohnRokesmith

I am a bit concerned that the potential anti-woke backlash is bigger than people think. What's going on in Portland seems nightmarish and terrifying, and it's not being well covered by US media - that makes it a time bomb that could be detonated by the Republican campaign at any point. The trans issue is another potential time bomb if people wake up to the scale of it, or if they are suddenly made aware of the scale of it.

Another issue which has been under-reported is the significant increase in the murder rate, up by 23% as of early August. Urban America is looking incredibly dystopian right now, and I suspect that Trump is allowing this to happen, on the basis that it might encourage people to vote Republican.

I don't know. In most cases the presidency has no role in that sort of thing. Where he has talked about sending people into these cities, the progressives have flipped their lids.

Whether he does the right thing, or nothing, or anything, what passes for the left in the US is making such a hash of it and are framing it in such a way that they are practically pushing votes in his direction.

Should have said Times UK

Just thought you might like a read of this Times Article today. Nothing much that hasn't already been said but the comments are interesting

My gut feeling is Biden will win. Trump was always marginal and there is a group of people who voted for him reluctantly were seriously horrified by some of his actions. While I can't see anyone who voted for HC not voting for Biden, who is the same but less overtly so.

Though I do think BLM might send some votes to Trump with the business about defunding the police. And not just from the well off.

In some ways I feel like more terms of corporate Democrats will just result in another Trump, but potentially a lot worse.

Kantastic · 19/08/2020 23:31

I don't think Trump will win

I hope you're right. With my head. Saving the environment is the most important thing and it's unclear whether either candidate will or even wants to avert Gilead.

Plus we can assume Putin wants Trump to win and I suspect their manipulation tactics have only got more sophisticated since 2016. And it seems that increasingly people are willing to believe anything at all, more and more people are entirely switching their critical thinking off and are ripe targets for manipulation.

BlackWaveComing · 19/08/2020 22:57

Women will lose out in some ways, either way.

If it were me having to vote, I'd vote for who had the best policies on housing or environment. Yes, it's shit, but it is what it is.

I don't think Trump will win. Suburban white women are fired up. I've watched them shift over the past four years. Lots of them have Trump voting husbands who have moderated their political views also.

I do have to say, I think every single white BLM activist who spends more time out on the streets, and less time volunteering to help get out the vote, is a posturing ninny. Presumably some do both.

BlackWaveComing · 19/08/2020 22:54

I can't say I'd blame them.

Freespeecher · 19/08/2020 22:49

There's also the fact that some voters focus on the Supreme Court rather than the candidates themselves. RBG being on her last legs may focus some minds and keep them voting Biden.

I think it's just that Biden is one of those corporate / moderate Dems who are looking for a policy that garners kudos amongst the Woke without entailing a raise in taxes.

Bit of a tin ear as it involves pissing off half the electorate but there we are.

It doesn't mean they'll automatically vote Trump, but I suspect Biden will have problems getting the vote out. Can't imagine people leaping out of bed to vote for Sleepy Joe whereas at least a proportion of Trump's voter base are super-energised to vote for him.
