Why has 'Minor Attracted Person' replaced 'paedophile'?

All it means is that MAPs want sex with a slightly wider age-range of children than paedophiles, according to the dictionary. They all still want to abuse children, as minors are still children.

@RCBadger

Paedophile and MAP are not necessarily the same thing. A paedophile is sexually attracted to prepubescent children. An MAP is sexually attracted to people who are minors. If the minor is considered under the age of consent, then having sex with them if you an adult is a crime. But it's not the same as paedophilia.
I’m disturbed by this comment as it does make it sound more legitimate. I appreciate you are just clarifying. “A MAP Is sexualy attracted to ‘Children and young teens‘ who are minors” is more accurate than ‘people‘.

Puberty happens at different times so we put an age on consent.

I think you’ve raised a good point OP that it’s important that any raise awareness that the term is being used but it’s not acceptable.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 17/08/2020 01:56

It's "rebranding ". It's hiding in plain sight. It's an attempt to legitimise it , sanitise it and make it sound like a valid sexual orientation.
It's an attempt to enter the mainstream. How many twitter handles would put pedophile /hebephile on their bio?

MissMarks · 17/08/2020 01:17

MAP is disgusting. They are trying to present themselves as in some way normal. They are not and being as devious as always. Every time this abbreviation is used it should be called out and corrected to sex offender/ pedophile.

LittlePaintBox · 17/08/2020 01:13

The. campaign to normalise adults raping children is older than the Paedophile Information Exchange, who tried to dress it up as a 'right'.

JellySlice · 17/08/2020 01:13

Maybe it's just the threads that I've been seeing. I can't AS on the app.

I see now that there is a difference between MAP and paedophile, though it's not a difference that is commonly known.

@JellySlice

Why are we going along with it?
We're not.
ErrolTheDragon · 17/08/2020 00:38

I haven't seen 'paedophile' used on MN in ages. It's all MAP.

I just tried an AS, starting date Aug 1st, it's found loads of threads using 'paedophile'. MAP with this meaning swamped by map (hm, maybe that's one reason for using an acronym?)

TyroSaysMeow · 17/08/2020 00:36

Hiding out in a layer of the English language they've not yet been nailed down in. The public'll catch on eventually, and start having the same gut reaction to the label 'map' as they do 'paedophile' and 'kiddy fiddler'.

@MistyGreenAndBlue

It hasn't. It's what they call themselves. Everyone else still calls them paedophiles AFAIK

I think the headline of this has it about right, describing it as a 'chilling online propaganda drive'

Morning After Pill?

I must be going down the wrong rabbit holes.

SweetGrapes · 17/08/2020 00:11

It's rebranding to escape the stigma.
