First time I've seen a piece like this in the Manchester Evening News

Remember when it was reported years ago that Michael Jackson had had hormone treatment to block puberty and keep his voice high? People thought that was in the outer realms of eccentricity. (And look what happened to him... )

@Goosefoot

So, about why non-binary seems to mean no boobs.

There are some obvious issues around this as others have brought up, but I suspect that part of the reason people are able to convince themselves of this is because children of neither sex have boobs. So that's seen as a sort of neutral state. In a way, you could say men's lack is neutral as well, they are an undeveloped organ. Breasts are very much an overt secondary sex characteristic, and directly connected to motherhood and reproductive role.

If you examine it for a moment, it shows up the lie of non-binary of course, because there is actually no neutral body, we are all sexed.

But lots of people have an image of themselves as children as more or less non-sexual.

the person I know with a fundraiser for a double mastectomy/testosterone also identifies as non-binary - a former lesbian and sadly too young for sterilisation. Maybe its a thing?

Just realised the article must be referring to Sawtel, which is indeed 5 hours south of Brisbane.

The article claims Sawtel is a village but really it's a suburb of the small city of Coff's Harbour, home to the Coast'sOut regional LGB festival and a modest but thriving gay scene.

No bloody way she had to go to Brisbane to find a gay bar.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/08/2020 20:39

There are gay bars in Bendigo never mind Melbourne.

Yep, I can attest to that- not far from Castlemaine at all.

Given that, as PP pointed out, they seem to have no idea where Castlemaine actually is, I wonder how much of the fund raiser is true.

@merrymouse

So according to that article ‘rejecting adulthood’ is now a gender identity that can be affirmed, not a sign of a psychological condition that requires treatment.
Yup, I think it's totally bonkers.

But there is a certain logic to having a self-image that is non-sexual, and then distress as you perceive or experience becoming a sexual being. Potentially both due to all the complications of sex, and just the change in self-image that is required - that is always difficult psychological work whenever we need to do it, when we become parents, as our bodies age, if we discover we are infertile, we have an accident that changes how we look, etc.

My feeling though is that young people are encouraged to think their self is so very fragile that any challenge like that is a sort of terrible thing that can't be faced. Maybe part of the problem is they are not very grounded or rooted, they don't have an experience of having a kind of consciousness that remains coherent and unifying of all these changes and experiences.

That reminds me of this thread Goosefoot

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3980096-it-gets-worse-a-new-fresh-hell

In this article, we analyse the novel case of Phoenix, a non-binary adult requesting ongoing puberty suppression (OPS) to permanently prevent the development of secondary sex characteristics, as a way of affirming their gender identity. We argue that (1) the aim of OPS is consistent with the proper goals of medicine to promote well-being, and therefore could ethically be offered to non-binary adults in principle;

Phoenix, 18, was assigned female at birth but has identified as gender non-binary (not entirely/exclusively male or female) since age 5.

Forever young? The ethics of ongoing puberty suppression for non-binary adults

So, crop tops: trans-friendly but potentially deadly.

SocialMedea · 17/08/2020 14:43

@SerenityNowwwww

If you are non binary why exactly can’t you have boobs?

I think this is a great question.

I'm in a rush - has anyone tried to answer it?

Deliriumoftheendless · 17/08/2020 13:29

Here’s Johnny Depp, Alex Winters and Carl Weathers!

Crop tops, although those hot pants may require tool cropping 😂

Deliriumoftheendless · 17/08/2020 13:23

I watch a lot of horror films and many of the 80s slasher films have men/boys in crop tools and hot pants. It was a thing then.

merrymouse · 17/08/2020 13:04

It would be great if more men were fighting for their right to wear crop tops in situations where a comparable woman would be allowed to wear a crop top.

I live in a part of the world where the vibrantly trousered man is celebrated, but they don't seem to have branched out into crop tops.

I thought feminism was about women's rights to live their life without judgement, without feeling pressured to be any kind of way that society says they should be. Guess I was mistaken and definitely not a feminist anymore

Yes you are mistaken and what you describe is not feminism.

merrymouse · 17/08/2020 12:53

"But I came to terms with being non-binary a few months ago when I realised I had to identify as something more clear to other people."

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO.

You don't have to identify as anything to make yourself clear to other people.

You are human and that is enough.

You will however always have to live with the fact that your sex is female, just like every other person whose sex is female, even the ones who have had surgery and taken drugs to appear more male.

The ideology behind this is the exact opposite of "grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference"

fatblackcatspaw · 17/08/2020 12:31

Jess is on instagram and twitter do follow her. She's had someone dm her followers on instagram demanding that her followers unfollow her. The TRA Cultural Revolution grinds on.

fatblackcatspaw · 17/08/2020 12:28

chap in the crop top

fatblackcatspaw · 17/08/2020 12:26

Teddy Lamb I think - he was one of the instigators to get Jess De Wahl thrown out of her workspace at the Soho Theatre at the beginning of the year for posting a gender critical post on her blog. She's the embroiderer who has done the amazing portrait of jK Rowling

www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/spinningfields-bar-accused-transphobia-after-18761963 I just know you're all thinking what I'm thinking

TheKarenWhoKnocks · 17/08/2020 11:15

Yeah they're joggers. Most people wouldn't get into a place with a dress code wearing joggers.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 17/08/2020 09:07

@TheKarenWhoKnocks

Adam Maidment is MEN's LGBTQ+ reporter so this article is on topic for him, even though it couldn't be considered news. He ran a piece a couple of days ago about the transphobic behaviour of Manchester door staff at a venue who refused entry to this woman, citing reasons to do with dress code.
I saw this one. They deffo look like (pink) sweatpants to me, even if they are ‘tapered’.

I looked at Maidment’s recent articles and I really cannot fathom why MEN pays him for anything (copy and paste of a NB fundraiser and then some stuff about potholes in Whalley Range, mostly)

DidoLamenting · 17/08/2020 00:11

@PotholeParadise

I agree that people of both sexes can wear pink, however they identify. Crop tops, too.

But I wouldn't expect to get into a snooty restaurant in a crop top, sweatpants (especially not ones with a side-stripe in another colour), and trainers, at any age or figure.

Teddy might have been turned away because door staff saw a man dressed in women's clothes, in which case transphobia/ homophobia or simply because their outfit is hideous. There will be loads of places which would turn Teddy, or anyone dressed similarly, away, no matter what their gender ID is.

The bouncer's attitude to Jamie Rose Dee was rude and unnecessary. The phone call from the manager where he called her "sir" unfortunately might be down to the fact Jamie's voice is very masculine. Jamie has videos on YouTube. Her voice is not low a la Mariella Frostrup or Kirsty Young but masculine sounding.

Rose of Dawn has mentioned the issues with voice. If I knew nothing about Rose of Dawn and had only heard her speaking I would assume she was a woman. If I knew nothing about Jamie and had only heard her speaking I would assume she was a man.
