Stonewall drop Mermaids?

Seems Stonewall used to direct young people to Mermaids. But the link has been removed from the page?:

www.stonewall.org.uk/help-advice/coming-out/coming-out-young-person

And the page that used to be on there appears to be blank:

www.stonewall.org.uk/organisations/mermaids

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark, y'all.

A friend of mine who is very GC happens to manage information pages targeted at parents. The first thing she did when she started was to discreetly remove any links to mythical female sea creatures on the basis that they stink!
No legal intervention, just a strongly held view.
She did retain the link to the NHS information pages.

Binglebong · 14/08/2020 14:28

Don't the Law Society frown really hard on people who give "informal" legal advice? Not covered by insurance etc...

ListeningQuietly · 14/08/2020 14:00

The wheels of court cases turn slowly
but I can imagine many organisations taking legal advice to restructure
their websites and information pages
so that when the Excrement interacts with the ventilation device
they can pull those pages PDQ without wrecking the rest of their websites

@NearlyGranny

Looks like the tide is going out, leaving the mermaids stranded and flapping...

Great that.

gardenbird48 · 14/08/2020 12:27

@Xanthangum

a well executed upgrade would not usually be visible to users

Perhaps it was only visible to cervix-users.

maybe we accidentally picked it up on our 'mum radar' - mainly designed for detecting the little DCs being up to no good but was there interference on the line....? Grin

@SerenityNowwwww

That’s not how you do a big site reorganisation. You mirror the site, do your changed then switch sites, you don’t do death by a thousand cuts on a live site.
that's odd - Nancy K mentioned 'a creaky, slightly elderly website' as being at fault, yet the website was rewritten in 2017 - I know technology moves fast but I don't think three years counts as 'elderly'.

I agree Serenity - a well executed upgrade would not usually be visible to users as that was. Obviously they didn't intend to remove the page permanently so just a poorly run re-org project?

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 14/08/2020 11:32

Aha! Mirrors! I knew it had something to do with them. And smoke? Smile

Hi, I think Stonewall have since said they had been reorganising their website. When I had first clicked on that link, there was a page titled Mermaids that was blank - they've since reinstated it. Or moved it, or something. It's coming up 'not found'. But that could still just be a website reorganisation.

Apologies if I passed on a misunderstanding or duff information - I'm not really sure what was going on.

I do still think there seems to be a certain amount of quietude. We'll see, I suppose.

highame · 14/08/2020 09:06

I think more than that. Is being done very quietly. I might be wrong but...

There is the NSPCC which was posted on Fair Cop a couple of days ago and unusually the tweet is unavailable, and on here on another thread plus others such as Childline, Children in Need I think

I would expect children's organisations and charities to be cautious and remove links. Safeguarding might cause them some major issues in the future. They're all still aware of Savile

ValancyRedfern · 14/08/2020 08:51

I'm sorry to say I don't think the wheels are coming off Mermaids any time soon. I don't think there's been any mojor shift and the BBC and two isolated tweeters deleting Mermaids seems to be it.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/08/2020 08:46

Maybe the speculation is premature and the OP just got a buggered up link?

ErrolTheDragon · 14/08/2020 08:44

And in this page....

www.stonewall.org.uk/help-advice/coming-out/coming-out-young-person

ErrolTheDragon · 14/08/2020 08:42

The link is still on this page, maybe that's the one you meant?

www.stonewall.org.uk/about-us/news/lgbt-inclusive-organisations-you-should-know-about
Am I missing something, I see ScrimpshawTheSecond Wed 12-Aug says "Seems Stonewall used to direct young people to Mermaids. But the link has been removed from the page?:" Er well, not when I looked just now at www.stonewall.org.uk/help-advice/coming-out/coming-out-young-persons
I just clicked that link and got a page not found.

Well... I suppose they could in part just be overhauling their website and making a hash of it.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 14/08/2020 08:09

I for one would assist in supporting past the free trial and indeed supporting other costs as a group to archive the madness.

I would donate too. Excellent work going on here, Needa and others.

Notthefutureyet · 14/08/2020 03:21

Confused here as to what people think is happening.

Mermaids are still on the Stonewall site, still on NHS sites, and still seemingly everywhere else???

HandsOffMyRights · 13/08/2020 14:03

On 28 Dec 2018, just a few months after David Challenor's crimes were made public, Mermaids tweets an old Huff Post article supporting Mermaids by Aimee Challenor (Trans community comes together to say we #standwithmermaids).

David Challenor repeatedly raped and tortured a young girl in the attic of the two up two down he shared with the then Green Party's A.Challenor. He was also Aimee Challenor's agent at the time. Why on earth would Mermaids, a children's charity, actively promote anything relating to any of the Challenors who were either in prison or under investigation at that time and at the centre of David's horrendous crimes relating to paedophilia, child rape and abuse?

hardgallife · 13/08/2020 13:56

@MrsNoah2020

Can I just point out that we don't really want Stonewall to distance itself from Mermaids? We don't want them to try to to scapegoat Mermaids for the entire transitioning-of-minors shitshow.

Stonewall have been every bit as involved as Mermaids, and they are more culpable. Their mission was supposed to be to help LBG people when, in fact, they have been enthusiastically pushing the ultimate in homophobia: telling gay kids that they are born in the wrong body and need drugs or surgery to fix themselves. I want to see them own what they have done, not try to slide out the Fire Exit now, before the full scandal hits.

I've been trying to look it up. There is nothing on Stonewall's website that explicitly shares that gay kids are born in the wrong body (there appears to be a lot of LGB affirmative stuff too) and no pink brains stuff that other people tweet about them.

Is there a direct source?

HandsOffMyRights · 13/08/2020 13:46

@Kantastic

I am so confused. Given everything we know about Mermaids already I genuinely can't imagine what would cause their supporters to disown them.

Regarding their staff, we already know about

 • Sixteenth birthday penis operation
 • Susie Green laughing about how puberty blockers caused complications in that operation.
 • Thailand changing its laws apparently because of what Susie Green did
 • Susie Green claiming that there should be no psychological assessments in place for kids to transition.
 • A "cis woman" who works for Mermaids taking a transwoman to court for transphobia.

On an operational level we know that:

 • Kids who get involved with Mermaids are more likely to receive trans treatments
 • Tavistock staff have complained about Mermaids influencing children's decisions
 • the number of kids being treated in trans clinics has increased 5000% over the last few years, there are suddenly far more than girls seeking trans treatments and no one has any explanation for this increase and the altered sex ratio, other than social contagion. Mermaids try to silence everyone who wants to discuss this and influences these children to get dangerous untested medical treatments.
 • many of the children Mermaids influences are same-sex attracted or on the autistic spectrum.
 • thirty staff have resigned from the Tavistock over the past few years and many of them have spoken up to raise concerns about how it is operating, some naming Mermaids as part of the problem.
 • there was a massive data breach last year exposing private and personal information about the children Mermaids are working with.

On the medical level we know that:

 • the protocol of blockers + x-sex hormones is a massive untested medical experiment on children and Mermaids advocates for this relentlessly
 • there is considerable evidence that puberty blockers damage bones and causes osteoporosis
 • there is considerable evidence that puberty blockers damages IQ
 • the puberty blockers + x-sex hormone treatment causes infertility
 • some evidence suggests the protocol causes considerable impairment in sexual functioning
 • all the best evidence suggests that without this protocol most of the children being "treated" would desist and therefore not have to deal with iatrogenic bone damage, IQ damage, or infertility, or the additional risks associated with x-sex hormones
 • many of the girls who were early adopters of this fad are already desisting, after considerable damage to their health and wellbeing.
 • Bottom line: sure seems like thousands of gay and autistic children are being needlessly sterilised thanks to Mermaids.

Okay so now I've listed all this out, what on earth could make their supporters decide they've gone too far?

A comprehensive summary!

Also recalling their association with Webberleys and RT A.Challenor's blog after Challenor senior's rape and torture of a child charges emerged. I still have the RT.

@SerenityNowwwww

And no women relatives then?
Not any that matter, presumably.

What’s his dog on this race? I assume he has one.
Obviously I'm blocked, but I think he's hinted about having a trans relative in the past.
