TWAW

I'm pondering. Would it be unreasonable to think that most people and corporations in the public eye who bleat this twaw stuff don't actually believe it and are frightened of the backlash? So then twaw just becomes a bleated mantra and over time is (terrifyingly)accepted as fact?

Credo in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentem, factorem caeli et terrae, visibilium om-nium et invisibilium.

It's the same sort of thing.

After all the creed goes on to say "and in JC his only son, begotten, not made, of one being with the father... and in the holy spirit..."

Back when I was a religious believer, my vicar (spendidly liberal Christian) used to joke that most sane clergy timed their holiday to coincide with Trinity Sunday so some other bugger had to preach about the trinity.

Believing several impossible things before breakfast isn't just an accidental part of religions/quasi religions, it's actually central to them.

It's a way whereby the faithful can demonstrate, very visibly and publicly, that they are so devout and virtuous they are prepared to put all other things - family, friends, material wealth, even logic and the evidence of their own eyes - to one side to demonstrate how holy they are.

Whenever you hear "TWAW" there's almost always an unspoken "except when..."

Happens on here a lot, someone comes to tell us we are all big meanies because TWAW, and then when questioned it turns out they don't believe it after all...

DialSquare · 07/08/2020 14:43

It's a nonsense mantra to try to shut people up.

TRA "TWAW".
Other "What makes them women?"
TRA "They feel like women"
Other "How do you feel like a woman?"
TRA "SHUT UP YOU TRANSPHOBE!"

Unfortunately, the fear of that accusation convinces many people to go along with it whether they believe it or not.

No-one wants to point out that the Empress has no vagina...

thehumanformerlyknownasfemale · 07/08/2020 14:38

@DannyGlickWindowTapping

There's a lot of anecdotal reports of people who believe that trans women are born female, transitioning to men.
I'm convinced ActionAid had that understanding too, with their 'no such thing as a biological woman' statement, and then their following explanation.

The only way it made sense was if they were mistaken and thought trans women and trans girls were born female, and are/have transitioned to male.

CatandtheFiddle · 07/08/2020 14:36

I think a lot of men recite the mantra "Transwomen are women" without

a) realising the effect that this has on actual women
b) ever thinking - or it even crossing their brain - that they would date, have sex with, marry, or raise a family with a transwoman

They have no skin in the game, so it costs them nothing.

Except gay men. Bu oh, guess what? I've never seen a gay man being told that he's transphobic for not wanting to have sex with someone with a vulva and vagina. Fancy that!

In fact, Little Owen Jones responded to questions on Twitter about how he'd feel about cunnilingus (ie sex with a transman) with a "Piss off, you homophobes!"

It’s a corporate mantra. They believe it’s a majority opinion and those that offends is a tiny minority.

BovaryX · 07/08/2020 14:32

It is a tautology, a closed slogan. Its stark, simplistic form is reminiscent of slogans from 1984, which is fitting because it demands submission from its audience. No questions. No dissent. It is a slogan on a telescreen.

nauticant · 07/08/2020 14:32

Hardly anyone believes it in a literal sense. It's a way of demonstrating that one is politically sound. I'd say the majority of the declarers, while making their declaration are saying in their heads "... but only in the sense of being treated as if they were women."

Generally, people declaring their faith positions isn't a problem unless they believe they can force others to declare them too or it leads to real world outcomes that cause harm.

FFSFFSFFS · 07/08/2020 14:31

Well - the slogan is never "Men can have periods" or "Men can have vaginas too".

So - its not a real acceptance of fact. It's just a bullshit slogan that is the psychological seepage of feminism actually starting to have an impact on (some parts) of the world.

merrymouse · 07/08/2020 14:26

I think most people who say that (particularly men) haven't thought through why its a problem.

MermaidUnicorn · 07/08/2020 14:26

Yes, and most assume it's referring to the small amount of fully transitioned individuals, not the Stonewall 'umbrella' definition.

noeyedeer · 07/08/2020 14:25

I think most haven't thought very deeply about it at all. They probably "believe" it in that vague way where all transwomen are post operative and no threat whatsoever whilst also only being a tiny percentage of the population.

I suspect most who don't believe it stay quiet for fear or reprisal.

Those who do believe it seem to be very intent on their own model of social justice.

I believe it is called the "Illusory Effect" A certain president uses it all the time.
